Flea is no doubt a flashier player but at the end of the day Jeff writes and plays music that I enjoy more.

Someone mentioned Primus too, and I agree. Les is awesome but after about 3 Primus songs I'm done. The "look-at-me", center stage, bass playing isn't something that appeals to me and I like guys like Jeff and Colin from Radiohead's style a lot better.

Plus I fucking hate RHCP. One of the most over-rated bands of all time. John and Flea are the shit but I'm just not a fan of the band at all.

Primus is very fun live, I highly recommend it. The studio albums just really suck IMO

Primus is great live. Saw them last year. I agree, the live show is way better.
I also enjoyed RHCP on the Stadium tour- will be seeing them again in October. 8-)

who's better... Tom Brady or tony Romo? It's that big a gap. Jeff isn't in the class of a flea, claypool, geddy lee, etc... Not in this respect anyway. He will tell you this if you ask him I guarantee it. :between:

matt freeman and fat mike are better too.

    But Tony Romo really sucks.

Yeah and Im sure Eddie would say he's not in the class of Gene Simmons

I would have to go with Jeff. He brings more to the table than Flea.

Can't really compare two completely different styles. Im a bass player and flea is a very skilled player if you like that kinda thing. Not for me though. If jeff played like flea PJ would be very different and I'd probably hate them haha

  • Jeff v Michael Balzary?

The latter was also, as an FYI, born in Australia....
    Melbourne to be exact.

    Matt Freeman...end of thread.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsgWs4sNHwM

Have you seen Matt Freeman showcasing the new Fender Bassman Tube Amps on Fender.com. ? Great player even though I'm not very up on his band and great amps, nothings better than a classic sounding Bassman in my opinion, I've just ordered mine from fender!!! :)

John F vs. Mike M.? come on...

Frusciante concedes defeat to no one. Sorry Mike, but the Frus is in a musical class of his own.

And more on topic, when it comes to "wow, what a bass player!" factor, Flea also wins. Hands down.

Big Lebowski, Back To The Future 2 & 3, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas....Flea has been in three of my favorite movies.

Unfortunately he's never played on any of my favorite albums.

I believe that Flea's Bass sound is more apparent in the Chili Peppers sound, where as Jeff's Bass is more properly laid perfectly in the music of Pearl Jam. Nothing again't either style, but if you really pay attention to both bands you can clearly hear Flea's Bass stand out more. I think that is their dynamic. As for Pearl Jam, they are brilliant at laying their instruments in just the right places.

Flea might be a better Bassist on sheer popularity, but if you asked either of them I bet they say each other. Listen to Led Zeppelin and you have to listen closely to pick out John Paul's Bass, but without it Zep's sound would be off. The Peppers clearly wanted to have a Bass sound that was out there and loud. In the everlasting debate over who is better than who and whatnot, I would go with Jeff because I love Pearl Jam far more than I do R.H.C.P., but ask a fan of the Chilli Pep's and they'll say the opposite.

Love a good healthy music debate.
