Last Friday night I was lucky enough to see Ben solo. He opened for JJ Grey & Mofro in St Augustine, FL. He was a last minute addition after another band pulled out (win for me). Ben was incredible. I hadn’t seen him since 2016, and that was with the Innocent Criminals. He only played for about an hour but he got through a good amount of songs, told some stories, and even played a NEW song “off his upcoming album”! Yea that’s right…a new Ben Harper album!

And then I spotted Ben side stage watching Mofro at one point later on in the night. Both performances were incredible. The only thing that could had made it better was if PJ was playing too.
Hell yes!!! Thank you so so much for the update! I’ve been trying to find the setlist or a video and haven’t been able find anything. Sounds like an awesome show! Thanks again, I’m pumped about this.
Yea, I was hoping someone would had update the set list by now.
Right, I’ve checked like 5 times a day since Saturday. They showed that he played two songs at a benefit the previous night in NY. Did, when the levee breaks with Danny Clinch for one of them, but still nothing from Friday. Did you get a feel for the new song? A title?

No title, and he performed it on a piano. Lots of emotion. I thought it had an opera-like feel to it.

Finally, a new album! Now, if he’ll just bring the Innocent Criminals to the South again!

Ha! It’s cool though, will be a fun looking at the setlists. I’m guessing probably like 12 songs give or take per show as an opener. Got a whole Euro tour first though.

A little snippet I got from RecordStoreDay website:

It was like I was moving forward and venturing into places I had never been before. Taking everything I've learned from every other record and kind of setting fire to it all and starting over," Ben Harper says of his new album Bloodline Maintenance. "And I knew the sounds I was hearing in my head were so unorthodox that I had to do most of it myself." The result is a fearless and immensely soulful work largely inspired by the loss of a longtime friend and the lingering influence of a mercurial and charismatic father. Along with guitar and bass, Harper also played the drums including an eclectic assortment of percussions. The deliberately open spaces and accented beats influenced in large part by the exploratory rhythms of the hip-hop he has loved since his teens. The result is less a direct influence than the applying of hip-hop's inventiveness to longstanding paradigms of soul, blues and jazz, spinning it all forward into a reconfiguration of a new black Americana. "If this is my Mule Variations, then hallelujah." Harper says, referencing the groundbreaking Tom Waits record. Bloodline Maintenance is both a political and personally revealing work. It is soul music, but never a stylistic tribute to some bygone era. The sound and words are essential and undeniably timely. Harper acknowledges that much of the exploration on the record was fueled by an awareness of time. "It's this notion of mortality and the people we have lost. The way I hoped it would all turn out and the realization that, as beautiful as it all can be, perhaps none of it matters beyond these moments.

Sounds great, so excited he is putting out a new album. Love his stuff with Musselwhite, but excited to hear a new, non-instrumental album!

My first Ben Harper show was my first PJ show back in ‘96! He’s always so amazing!
