Point is, there are more economical options.

Sure, there always are. That is not my objective though and I exersice my right to do it how i like. For someone to look at my lifestyle and get all bent because I burn more gas than them that's cool but I think it's foolish.

That may be your right but is it responsible? What if (and I correct my figure from above) all 7,000,262,376 people on earth consumed at that rate? What kind of "lifestyle" would that create?

Politicians shouldn't be talking about bringing the price of oil down, they should be talking about ways to get off it. Domestic oil production in this country is higher than before Obama got in office... We can't drill our way out of this. WE NEED ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCES. No dem or rep can fix this issue by drilling more

and PS - polaris' point of having to stop while fueling kind defeats your purpose. In fact, lugging al lthat fuel probably cuts down on your mpg anyways. But then again, who knows, maybe you have one of those low flying refueler aircraft that fills you while you're moving for more convenience? ;)

Not at all, polaris does not make a relevant point with regard to my reserves. Completely misses it still actualy. Again, many of you are looking at it from your own lense. My fuel reserves only go with me in an emergency/"event". In such a scenario, I do not count on or expect to be able to re-fuel my vehicle through retail. Lilly pad number 3 is hundreds of miles from my home and lilly two is in the same geographical location so each (1 & 2) may be comprimised after an event. If you would like to discuss this further we can, because I am here to help.

I, for one, am not too bent about this, but rather thankful that I considered all the options and put myself in a place where I cant complain about gas prices, as you did a few pages back.
    To each their own.

I only get bent when I consider what would happen if everyone drove these monsters (as Brianlux points out). Actually, its nearly everyone in south florida driving these huge SUVs. And most dont need them. it is a symbol of excess in my area, no doubt. But that really has nothing to do with you.

Exactly. I live in the Sierra foothills in an area basically in the 1800 to 2200 ft elevation range. Over half the vehicles you see around here are monster trucks and SUV's that people drive because they "don't want to get stuck in the snow or mud". We get a day or two of snow here and the vast majority of our roads are paved. And most times I see people driving these things they are alone and carry no loads. It's total bullshit.

if everyone toured as much as pearl jam could you imaging the amount of gas burnt?

This line of reasoning is not how I roll. I don't feel bad for my lifestyle and I surely am not going to curb it because everyone else can't do it too.

Man, I have a Silverado right now so I can only dream of the fuel efficiency from my old SUV. :) I would love to have a Mini Cooper Sport for a second car, but that would be excess.

And I'm not to worried about burning a few extra gallons of gas as I try to make my environmental impact on a large scale beyond what I'm personally capable of.

Pearl Jam plants trees and buys carbon offsets. Bad example unless you're doing the same for your energy usage.

Holy Christ people. The problem isn't driving an suv, it's what you fuel it with so stop complaining for or against suv's already. This thread was about the president and oil Prices not suv's! There's a real conversation to be had here

I thought it was clear...driving SUVs, sedans, trucks, spaceships, boats...it doesn't matter, oil production is at its peak and people are arguing who's car wastes more gas; I was lookin to stay on topic but I guess grandma got tired of hearing the kids making all that damon noise

Earlier today in this thread I made a comment about over half the vehicles in my area being trucks and SUV's. Later, while out on business I got to thinking that maybe I spoke to soon so I did a quick survey. On a one of the major roads I was on in our county I counted the first 100 vehicle to pass me. Not counting service or utility trucks I counted 62 pickup trucks/SUV's and 38 passenger cars (and not a single Prius). As far as I could see, all of the trucks and SUV's were being driven by sole occupants and none had visible loads in them.

Another interesting point: A few months ago I went out to purchase some additional shelving that I needed for my book business. A friend offered to let me take her humongous Toyota 4-Runner. With the passenger seat set as far forward as possible, I measured the the longest inside dimension of the 4-Runner capable of carrying the to-be-assembled boxed shelves and then did the same with my Prius. The Prius won out and at 45 MPG I saves much fuel using it instead of the 18 MPG 4-Runner. Also, with the back seats down I've carried as many as 22 banker-boxes full of books on hilly roads and even with that big a load still averaged over 40 MPG.

And as I've said previously elsewhere, my Prius is not a snob vehicle. Over the lifetime of this vehicle the savings in gas will not only pay for the entire vehicle, it will put money in my pocket. This is true- I've done the math a couple of times.

Tell me again why I need an SUV?

Good call- no one. But I think you get my point.

My local organic produce grower needs his truck. A friend who does large major book fairs needs his van. But most of the wide range of people I know in this area do not need trucks or SUV's. So why did I come up with 62 trucks/SUV's to 32 passenger cars?
