I really don't need for a news anchor to have integrity, and don't see why anyone else needs it either. This is a non-factor for me. I just need someone who reads the news well, has a nice sounding voice, and looks pleasant enough.

I think I'm a hypocrite. If Bill oreilly or Megan Kelly had done this, I'd be slamming them.

Nightly News? It's all smoke and mirrors- a drama version of Entertainment Tonight. I get more from my listening to my cat and watching the sky as far as knowing what's going on in the world than from watching the Nightly "News".

Brian, enjoy your retirement. Grow a beard.

Ha! This reminds me of one of my favorite films, Broadcast News.

I guess I see it the same as rr, in terms of integrity. I expect anyone, everyone, to have it. I know some don't, and when that happens, it's disappointing and that person's character has shrunk in my (inconsequential) opinion.

    Talk about a fraud:

I just don't see the outrage. My guess is that NBC wanted to embellish the story and he just read the words on the prompter. They showed the damaged helicopter...not his helicopter I assume....but there isn't much damage so it's really not like he is trying to take credit for being in "the war" like some critics seem to suggest.

Is it a better story to say the veteran protected them when bullets are flying or that they arrived safely (still in a war zone) and they just hung out for a few hours?

I don't think nbc made this up. These anchors do write their own scripts. I'm sure it is approved by somebody higher up than him. I do think when Williams originally reported this story, NBC knew it was embellished, but I don't see them telling Williams to lie. This is on him.

Don't watch the news so I don't care a bit. News anchors are glorified puppets. Mouth moves, sound comes out. Now, if a serious journalist who writes, like Glen Greenwald or Chris Hedges made up such a lie, I would be pretty pissed.

Not so fast Gambsy. If a anchor/Journalist/Reporter embeds themselves in the middle of the story. If they risk life and limb to bring me the news in my comfy living room.If they are taking the risk of being kidnapped, killed or tortured for a story, then the least I Can do is show them the respect of giving them credibility.
We tune in to CNN in the RR house.I tune out once we get past the story and into the sensationalizing of the topic at hand. But there is a chic who reports for them named Arwa Damon I think. She has brass balls. If it's a hairy situation, she's there.Violent, dangerous, crazy that's her comfort zone. The lady has skills and just because she has face time with the camera, doesn't mean we should diminish her journalistic integrity because she doesn't just go old school and use a 1970s newspaper/print news and a deadline as her vehicle.
We are a 30 second news clip society now.Everyone reporting will find their way to camera and face make up at some point.

Those who go into the field and embed have balls, yes, I won't deny that! Those who get out there have my respect for sure, but it doesn't require the same standard of journalistic integrity.

No they don't. Where's the head banging against a wall emoticon?

Since you're so sure, prove it. Prove that the news stations don't tell their anchors exactly what to say. And then explain what the hell a teleprompter is for.

Just a quick search in Google:

    https://books.google.com/books?id=KeCHGaFNbAUC&pg=PT25&lpg=PT25&dq=do+news+anchors+write+their+own+scripts&source=bl&ots=EBC8UAfHII&sig=npgJVVEPuuyzcWswb_jtB3KsCa4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=H0jWVOi-NMeMNvSSg7AG&ved=0CEAQ6AEwCTgK

I'm quite sure that there are anchors that read a written script from someone else. I know exactly 0 news anchors, but my guess is the majority of what is read is written by the anchor. They probably hand the script that they write and give it to whoever types it in the teleprompter. Sports center anchors do write their own scripts for their shows. If you want to call them a news source.

Can you prove that they don't?

  • I shared this in the AET thread, more people NEED to understand how the media works.

If you really want to read up (and I suggest everyone do this), here's some good links about our mainstream media. All of the media in the U.S. is owned by 6 corporations. They dictate what we hear. Finding reliable info defacing mainstream media is difficult because the media wants to keep the truth away from the public. But it is out there.

This is a short from the documentary "The Corporation", a film everyone should see which examines modern-day corporations, featuring interviews with corporate critics such as Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein and Howard Zinn. This shows 2 journalists fired from Fox News years ago for not agreeing to censor their report to comply with Monsanto's lawyers.
  • State Propaganda: How Government Agencies Produce Hundreds of Pre-Packaged TV Segments the Media Runs as News
    http://www.democracynow.org/2005/3/14/state_propaganda_how_government_agencies_produce
According to a major expose in The New York Times, federal agencies under the Bush administration–from the State Department to Agriculture to the Transportation Security Administration–have been producing hundreds of pre-packaged TV segments that have been broadcast on local stations as real news. (Yes, it's OLD news, it's been going on for years)
The article reports that at least 20 federal agencies–including the Defense Department and the Census Bureau–have distributed hundreds of television news segments in the past four years. Many were then broadcast on local stations without crediting the government as the source of the information.

The article goes on to state that "the administration’s efforts to generate positive news coverage have been considerably more pervasive than previously known. At the same time, records and interviews suggest widespread complicity or negligence by television stations." Later the article says that "some reports were produced to support the administration’s most cherished policy objectives like regime change in Iraq and Medicare reform...They often feature quote, unquote "interviews" with senior administration officials in which questions are scripted and answers rehearsed. Critics are excluded as are any hints of controversy, waste or mismanagement."
Amy Goodman's video is worth watching on this link. Is better than the text.

So a 6 month ban is a slap on the wrist. The only real question is whether or not he will have the balls to return after the suspension is up.
