I have no problems with Brian Williams in the past, but lying about being in a helicopter that got shot down in Iraq??? Can he be the face of NBC News with his credibility taking a shot like that?

I've been in helicopters that have been shot down multiple times. Multiple times, I say!

Sure, it was when I was playing Battlefield 4 on my playstation, but it's an experience you don't forget or are unsure of.

Do people really trust what media people tell us as factual? This is just one example why to not take what the mainstream media says as factual.

I would hope that we could trust that their personal experiences are factual. And I can even understand a little embellishment. But to make something up like that and think no one would ever call B.S. is crazy.

Too bad, as I like him as a nightly anchor. It will be interesting to see if he survives the internet mob lynching that is most likely brewing.

No he can't.This was a fabrication and a lie and it reflects his integrity.I like BW a lot and think he is a great anchor. But you must be above reproach and he lied.
Didn't Dan Rather do something stupid also?
  • It's as if you think that an individual is making this story up for whatever reason. Not so. Brian Williams is a representative of NBC and journalists have to say what their employers tell them. It is American propaganda, er um, media, you know. More than likely his boss thought it would be a brilliant story so they had him say it. That's how the media works. He's immediately fired if he doesn't report the news as he's told. And now, his career will be scarred.

  • It's about time that the public see the media as they are. I just feel bad for the scapegoat.

I feel pretty confident that NBC didn't tell him to say he was in a helicopter that got shot down to help fuel the american propaganda machine.
  • I don't think he's a bad guy for lying. Let's be real, all this guy (or any anchor) does is read the news.

    LOL!

It may take some time, but the public will eventually realize that "Nightly News" is actually "Nightly fiction". After all, fiction has drama, beef up that drama, the media circus tells its "actors", and who gets in trouble for the made up fiction? Of course, blame it on the "actor".

I don't care at all. This wouldn't affect how I think of him while he's anchoring the news. I never considered his role to be one that excluded him from telling tall tales about his own life. I am surprised anyone else feels like this changes anything, or is upset or surprised or anything else. Do people seriously need to "trust" news anchors?? It's not like they make or write the news. A news anchor could be the biggest liar on the face of the planet, and that still wouldn't affect what he's reporting on the 6 o'clock news. He's reading from a teleprompter! How honest or trustworthy he is in real life is neither here nor there. If anyone thinks so it seems almost like deluded thinking when it comes to news anchors, lol.
He's a good anchor. I hope people forget about this silly story soon and he can just get back to reading the news.

I wouldn't misremember being shot at in a car (I haven't been). I am certain the brain over time can make you forget things or remember things wrong, but not the big stuff like that.

I don't think you need to trust the news anchors, but Brian Williams like Tom Brokaw is a journalist and doesn't just read the news. If Williams could make up a big lie like that, then he could lie about other stories to fit his agenda (like we saw with CBS faking reports regarding Bush's service). It isn't like Williams is the news anchor for Columbus, Ohio reading the daily police report.

I agree that the evening news is a waste and there are much better news sources out there.

It's about integrity.Plain and simple. He has damaged his.I still like him,but this is a chink in his reputation and credibility.
  • He'll recover. He's a likable guy.

I really don't need for a news anchor to have integrity, and don't see why anyone else needs it either. This is a non-factor for me. I just need someone who reads the news well, has a nice sounding voice, and looks pleasant enough.

  • I think I'm a hypocrite. If Bill oreilly or Megan Kelly had done this, I'd be slamming them.

Nightly News? It's all smoke and mirrors- a drama version of Entertainment Tonight. I get more from my listening to my cat and watching the sky as far as knowing what's going on in the world than from watching the Nightly "News".

Brian, enjoy your retirement. Grow a beard.

Ha! This reminds me of one of my favorite films, Broadcast News.

I guess I see it the same as rr, in terms of integrity. I expect anyone, everyone, to have it. I know some don't, and when that happens, it's disappointing and that person's character has shrunk in my (inconsequential) opinion.

I just don't see the outrage. My guess is that NBC wanted to embellish the story and he just read the words on the prompter. They showed the damaged helicopter...not his helicopter I assume....but there isn't much damage so it's really not like he is trying to take credit for being in "the war" like some critics seem to suggest.

Is it a better story to say the veteran protected them when bullets are flying or that they arrived safely (still in a war zone) and they just hung out for a few hours?

  • I don't think nbc made this up. These anchors do write their own scripts. I'm sure it is approved by somebody higher up than him. I do think when Williams originally reported this story, NBC knew it was embellished, but I don't see them telling Williams to lie. This is on him.

Don't watch the news so I don't care a bit. News anchors are glorified puppets. Mouth moves, sound comes out. Now, if a serious journalist who writes, like Glen Greenwald or Chris Hedges made up such a lie, I would be pretty pissed.

Not so fast Gambsy. If a anchor/Journalist/Reporter embeds themselves in the middle of the story. If they risk life and limb to bring me the news in my comfy living room.If they are taking the risk of being kidnapped, killed or tortured for a story, then the least I Can do is show them the respect of giving them credibility.
We tune in to CNN in the RR house.I tune out once we get past the story and into the sensationalizing of the topic at hand. But there is a chic who reports for them named Arwa Damon I think. She has brass balls. If it's a hairy situation, she's there.Violent, dangerous, crazy that's her comfort zone. The lady has skills and just because she has face time with the camera, doesn't mean we should diminish her journalistic integrity because she doesn't just go old school and use a 1970s newspaper/print news and a deadline as her vehicle.
We are a 30 second news clip society now.Everyone reporting will find their way to camera and face make up at some point.

Those who go into the field and embed have balls, yes, I won't deny that! Those who get out there have my respect for sure, but it doesn't require the same standard of journalistic integrity.

No they don't. Where's the head banging against a wall emoticon?

Since you're so sure, prove it. Prove that the news stations don't tell their anchors exactly what to say. And then explain what the hell a teleprompter is for.
