the military is the only area in the government that is always hiring....

Didn't they just announce a reduction in staff over the next few years?
only until we start the next war.

of course, republicans in congress are fighting these reductions, because they can not allow military cuts....

what would the servicemen do ... just get let go to unemployment lines?
or would they stay on a reduced payroll or National guard?

It is very depressing disillusioning to be without work when you are a productive person
    with mouths to feed.

maybe they will work in local enforcement or even on laying the pipelines
    or highways etc

There's always Academi / Xe / Blackwater....private security firms = mercenaries. It's the future of warfare.
Big money to continue the governments dirty work; all the fun of killing, sans the red tape ;)

I wonder if oil subsidies were phased out, and transfered to photovoltaics, geothermal, wind, tidal, algae fuel etc to help develop those industries, just how many jobs that would create?
  • there are studies which indicate that they would create a whole helluvalot more jobs than another rotten pipeline.

that is why they go to work for blackwater. soldiers end up on the government payroll as police, security personnel, or as government/defense contractors.

there are more contractors than soldiers in iraq right now...

so if we cut the troops they will just go into private sector, get paid by tax dollars anyways
    hmmmm

and the US military will appear weaker in force most especially up against
a big military country like China
  • When is the last time you saw Chinese military in action?

Besides harassing a bunch of innocent Tibetans?

why do we have to be prepping for war with china?

we are not going to go to a conventional/boots on the ground war with china. they have a billion people in their population. they would win a war of attrition, and knowing that, that is enough of a deterrent for america to try to fight china.

why can't we wage peace and stop threatening other countries for once? the money we waste on bombs could be better spent elsewhere.

    i disagree.

this paranoia, fear of the military boogeyman that is going to invade our country is the problem with our country. no military power in the world is going to attack us on our soil. they know we have enough nukes in our arsenal to bomb that country to the cretaceous period. the attacks will be on our interests abroad where we can not defend ourselves as well. the attacks on our country are not going to be military. they are going to be terrorist attacks that create huge numbers of casualities, cyber attacks, hacking into our nuke aresnal and making them or our drones attack our own country. technology is making boots on the ground conflict nearly obsolete. if they can disable the technology or computers that are protecting our arsenals then we are in a world of hurt. if not, we will be safe.

the only military that could defeat us on our own soil is if many countries banded together like the axis powers, or a separate, anti american "coalition of the willing"..

Didn't someone call ME paranoid the other day? Inevitable?
    :?
What is it that makes some people so controlled by fear.....?

The hawks who justify pushing your country to the verge of economic collapse, based on fear, are more of a threat to your own survival than any foreign power....If you're ever invaded, it will be to pick the bones clean.
