Historic Sporting Events that You Witnessed in Person

1) Mark Buehrle's first no hitter vs Texas. He faced the minimum bc he managed to pick Sosa off at 1st after he walked him.

2) Mike Cameron's 4 home run game. He single handedly ended Jim Parque and John Rausch's careers as White Sox players. I also believe he robbed Magglio Ordonez of a Home Run that game, too.

3) Drew Brees set the single season passing yard record vs the Falcons on MNF at the Superdome

4) The debut of John Cena vs Kurt Angle on Smackdown like 10 yrs ago. My first and only wrestling event. (borderline historic :P )

Have you witnessed history?

Derek Jeter tying Lou Gehrig as the all time Yankee"s hit leader.

1998 Syracuse beating Virginia Tech with a TD from Donovan McNabb with no time on the clock to win the Big East.

I think the biggest thing I witnessed was Tyler Bozak's first NHL game. Either that or Curtis Joseph's last game.

Kevin Millwood no hitter vs. SF Giants. Had my 6 month old fall a sleep in my arms but once it reached the 6th with no hits, I had to stay.

Duke v. Kentucky at the Spectrum 1992 I believe. Could be the greatest basketball game ever!

    Edit. Eagles v. Packers 4th & 26! Fredex!

  • Not much.

I saw Sammy Sosa hit a homerun in whatever year the homerun battle was.

I saw the Vikings choke on the division championship and throw away their 1998 undefeated season to the Falcons.

How about the one i missed?
Randy Johnson's perfect game in atlanta.

I was meeting a friend from out of town and we were headed down to the game. We stopped at a bar to get a drink and while there out of no where my recurring corneal erosion flared up. Its painful as hell and the only thing i want to do when it happens is lay with my eyes closed in a dark room.

So i did not go to the game. :(

The end of the game was such a wierd vibe while walking out of the Metrodome. Not a single person was talking and people just had blank pissed of stares, it looked like everyone was just told that they had just got laid off.

ouch. that really blows. sorry to hear that. RJ was my favorite pitcher growing up. was he on the Dbacks that year?
  • Now that I think about, not sure if any of these qualify as "historic" but:
    Larry Bird reaching 20k points
The game where Big Papi set the Red Sox regular season HR record
and I've been to a bunch of Pats playoff games
and I was at the Ted Williams memorial at Fenway

  • Bob Geren's ground-rule double down the 3rd-base line off Greg Swindell leading off the 3rd inning in Yankee Stadium on August 6, 1990--his 7th double of the season, in fact. Also of note in that game, Kevin Maas hit his 11th HR of the season and Andy Hawkins picked up his 3rd win of the season in a 2-1 victory--a nail-biter of a game between 2 AL East powerhouses. Who posesses the treasure that is the ball from Bob Geren's 7th double? That would be me since my dad caught it. Who witnessed this event? Not too many people since the game wasn't televised in NY despite the Yankees' amazing season. Since you probably missed out on that thriller of a game and it had such historic implications, you can read all about it here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes ... 8060.shtml

I also witnessed the Chuck Knoblauch brainfart in the 1998 ALCS (also against Cleveland) when he decided that arguing with the umpire was more important than stopping baserunners.

Possibly Larry Birds Last Great game as a Celtic

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/box ... 50BOS.html
  • I went to many Celtics and Red Sox games during the late 60's and early 70's.
I can't remember if there were any record breaking events.
Although some things worth mentioning include :
My uncle was a sports reporter for the Boston Herald. He was able to let me ride on the post game bus back to the hotel with the 1968 Minnesota Twins. I had my seat as the Twins entered. Harmon Killebrew looked at me and said get this punk out of here. Chico Cardenas patted me on the head and said " no, let the little boy sit there. I also remember there was a bunch of booze on board and the players were using a lot of profanity.
    They lost that night.
A couple years later I ran a couple blocks and caught up to Ted Williams entering a diner for breakfast.
I asked for his autograph. He seemed pissed off. but he gave it to me. He was the manager for Washington Senators.
1971Boston Garden wrestling Dick "the Bulldog " Brower attacked Pedro Morales during the national anthem.
The fans were outraged. there was almost a riot.
In the hotel lobby, a car crashed through the window. Gorilla Monsoon was injured. A fan saw Gorilla later that day and said your injuries are fake. Monsoon went after the guy, but could not catch him.

I think I remember seeing That the foot was on the line.
  • 2002 MLB All-star Game in Milwaukee, tie game. But the Home run Derby the night before was Historic, It was the height of 'riods in baseball. Bond's didn't do much, but Sosa put on a hitting display that still gives me chills. I think he hit 8-10 balls from 500-560+ However Giambi, another juicer won it.

Not really historic but I was at the Penn State-Miami game in 2001 when Adam Taliaferro lead the team out of the tunnell a year after being paralyzed.

Missed Arods 500th home run by about 3 minutes

Nothing too 'historic', but my notables off the top pf my head

1.) When i was young. I saw Niagara University knock off Chris Mullen and St Johns, who was like #1 or 3 or something.

2.) Phillies Clinch Division in that comeback year when they passed the Mets

3.) Phillies Clinch NLCS vs LA ('10?)

4.) Halliday's no-hitter in the playoffs vs the Reds. (lived in Philly for only a few years and got pretty lucky)

5.) Sabres/Flyers when Barnaby was laying on the ice, hurt, then jumped up to attack Philly's goalie Garth Snow.

6.) Bartolo Colon perfect game for the Buffalo Bisons

7.) Buffalo Bisons vs Nashville Sounds 18-inning 1-game playoff for the American Association East Title (probably the best game I have ever seen).

8.) Alfredsson scores in OT to send the Ottawa Senators past the Sabres to the Stanley Cup Final.

    9.) 1st Winter Classic Pittsburgh @ Buffalo

10.) Smarty Jones nipped out just short of getting the Triple Crown at the Belmont

11.) 1st Game at the new(er) arena in Buffalo
  • pjhawkspjhawks Posts: 12,431
    1) Steve Carlton breaking the all-time strikeout record (later broken by Nolan Ryan). think it was like 1984 or something
    2) 2004 St. Joe's over St. Bonaventure to cap off a 27-0 regular season
    3) Last Year Phillies Wilson Valdez becoming the 1st non-pitcher to get a Win as a pitcher in a major league game in like 80 years

Jk_livin - I turned down noise bleed seats for that Kentucky-Duke game to watch on tv. Greatest college hoops game ever. my brother-in-law still gives me shit about turning those tickets down.

mayday10 - i was at that Smarty Jones Belmont as well. great day and thought he had it down the stretch. such a disappointment. i've seen like 4 or 5 horses fail in the belmont for the triple crown.

No shit I was there too. 10 rows behind home plate. Best ball game I've ever been to
  • David Ortiz's homer in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS. Section 42, Row 42 but man did Fenway rock. It was like walking through lightening leaving that stadium.
