They have about as much in common as Mike Tyson and the Queen of England, I understand if you may not have listened to Grateful Dead a lot or as much as some or maybe you just don't care and that's your right, but that's one of the most off base comments I have ever heard in my life, not just on this forum.

The only similarities to me would be they both have a very loyal fanbase and that pj was one of the first bands to make their shows available to the public like the dead. They also used the same stage in 95 at soldier field. I dont mind the audience recordings from the dead. Some sound really good others dont. The fact they are around from the 70s is cool to me. I do like how the dead just played music. Rarely did you ever hear any stage banter. I always thought it would be cool if pj transistioned into songs like the dead. Like an in my tree, off he goes, around the bend medley. Just music. Sometimes eds "uhh you know..uhh..sometimes..uhhh" between songs kills the vibe.

This I actually agree with. PJ shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as tGD. If music was a contest The Grateful Dead would destroy PJ in every category.

I actually think it's just the opposite since I can't stand jam bands or their sound. Throw Phish in their as well, I know they are great musicians but that doesn't mean it's good. It's all so, so boring and my goodness it just keeps going and going and going.

i knew u never saw jerry. some bands you need to see(&know) before you can be a proper judge

if u knew anything important about the grateful dead you would certainly know that they always offered up the element of surprise during their live shows...where anything could happen at any time, and i'm sure you would have to agree that this very same element exists at pearl jam shows

not sure how important this element is to you but as a touring fan it is the one of the main reasons why i love pearl jam and the grateful dead

the other obvious commonality is how both bands treat their fans. offering tickets to real fans is also one of the most important things that both bands have/did/do

oh...and both bands rawk and have sweet ballads-extreme highs and really pretty sweet lows. they both offer up the rollercoaster

you've never seen a band that were better live than on record? u don't see a lot of live music, do you? maybe you should stick with your records cause they always tell the whole complete story :?

glad you found some similarities and um i was never saying how they sound the same. not many bands can release live bootlegs of whole tours and be proud of their road shows ie) how many bands do you know of that completely change their setlist nightly, throughout the tour, so that each show is unique, and never duplicated? my guess is less than 4% of bands do this. imo it's a pretty big similarity. same goes for fan club tickets, which is something pj did before almost all bands today, except the grateful dead. right?

I think a band's live sound is very important to their legacy. It can also hurt a band.

After seeing The Mars Volta open for Soundgarden last summer, I threw all their CD's away and deleted them from iTunes upon returning home.

Their music is similar with regard to...the rhythm, the feel, the shake,

the feeling in "Can't Keep" for instance.

the part that makes you want to shake your bones

the part that makes your realize the brilliance in Riot Act..
