I don't really care about a festival recording that PJ wasn't in control of to be quite honest. Nor do I or PJ want hundreds of people creating thousands upon thousands of copies of their show.
The internet is way too powerful for the band to allow this. Sorry. There really isn't a debate. If you want to record with your little zoom recorder go for it.
I'll ask again..Since when does PJ not allow taping and free trading of their shows?
The point being they don't allow professional recording gear inside like the dead used to with big boom mic's etc.
that's the difference, yup
i have some damned great Dead recordings in my archives

Why would you want to tape a PJ show when they are all available at 1,000 times better quality?.
Just not for Eddie shows.
theres nothing better than getting to listen to the show you were at when you get home.Plus have you ever listened to a bootleg from a dead show?I'm not talking 1967.FOB aka Mouth of the Beast tapes smoke.FOB front of board.last i knew your not walking out of PJ show with a cd unlike at a Furthur show
I have Dead Boots that sound 100 times better then anything PJ has ever put out themselves , i can't even listen to PJ boots anymore ...

Love Pearl Jam. Love the Dead. But there's nobody in Pearl Jam as annoying as Donna Jean.
um except maybe...and?

dicks picks 18
get it if u dont got it :geek:
Just pulled it up on spotify (all the Dick's Pick's are there).
Love the mellow intro to Bertha. I'll let you know what I think of the rest.
OK - this is a great pick, listened to it a few times (back to Minglewood Blues now). Really good harmonies by Donna, and she doesn't go wailing in Playin'.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I think that the Dead have more in common with DMB then the do with PJ

They have about as much in common as Mike Tyson and the Queen of England, I understand if you may not have listened to Grateful Dead a lot or as much as some or maybe you just don't care and that's your right, but that's one of the most off base comments I have ever heard in my life, not just on this forum.
The only similarities to me would be they both have a very loyal fanbase and that pj was one of the first bands to make their shows available to the public like the dead. They also used the same stage in 95 at soldier field. I dont mind the audience recordings from the dead. Some sound really good others dont. The fact they are around from the 70s is cool to me. I do like how the dead just played music. Rarely did you ever hear any stage banter. I always thought it would be cool if pj transistioned into songs like the dead. Like an in my tree, off he goes, around the bend medley. Just music. Sometimes eds "uhh you know..uhh..sometimes..uhhh" between songs kills the vibe.
The Dead and Pearl Jam as bands have absolutely nothing in common.
This I actually agree with. PJ shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as tGD. If music was a contest The Grateful Dead would destroy PJ in every category.
"What can you expect when you're on top? You know? It's like Napoleon. When he was the king, you know, people were just constantly trying to conquer him, you know, in the Roman Empire. So, it's history repeating itself all over again."
The Dead and Pearl Jam as bands have absolutely nothing in common.

I actually think it's just the opposite since I can't stand jam bands or their sound. Throw Phish in their as well, I know they are great musicians but that doesn't mean it's good. It's all so, so boring and my goodness it just keeps going and going and going.
The Dead and Pearl Jam as bands have absolutely nothing in common. If they did, I would despise Pearl Jam's music.
i knew u never saw jerry. some bands you need to see(&know) before you can be a proper judge
if u knew anything important about the grateful dead you would certainly know that they always offered up the element of surprise during their live shows...where anything could happen at any time, and i'm sure you would have to agree that this very same element exists at pearl jam shows
not sure how important this element is to you but as a touring fan it is the one of the main reasons why i love pearl jam and the grateful dead
the other obvious commonality is how both bands treat their fans. offering tickets to real fans is also one of the most important things that both bands have/did/do
oh...and both bands rawk and have sweet ballads-extreme highs and really pretty sweet lows. they both offer up the rollercoaster

1) I don't need to see a band live to know if I like them or not.
2) Wow, they vary their setlists too? Oh geeze let me change my mind now
3) You couldn't pay me to go to a dead show.
4) So basically the bands aren't similar it's how they treat fans that are similar.
5) Their sound is nowhere near similar I don't care what you say.

you've never seen a band that were better live than on record? u don't see a lot of live music, do you? maybe you should stick with your records cause they always tell the whole complete story :?
glad you found some similarities and um i was never saying how they sound the same. not many bands can release live bootlegs of whole tours and be proud of their road shows ie) how many bands do you know of that completely change their setlist nightly, throughout the tour, so that each show is unique, and never duplicated? my guess is less than 4% of bands do this. imo it's a pretty big similarity. same goes for fan club tickets, which is something pj did before almost all bands today, except the grateful dead. right?
who said i would give you money to see the dead?? you are already too far gone to get it
this is not for you

I think a band's live sound is very important to their legacy. It can also hurt a band.
After seeing The Mars Volta open for Soundgarden last summer, I threw all their CD's away and deleted them from iTunes upon returning home.

4) No doubt it isn't for me because it's garbage.

the part that makes you want to shake your bones
the part that makes your realize the brilliance in Riot Act..

that. that's how they're the same.
