    I do not own a gun - I don't think I ever will....

I have traveled, been to many, many places and never felt the need for a gun.

I'm in Canada but could literally walk to the US. I've held a gun twice in my life and both times my hands were shaking, even knowing it wasn't loaded. Chances are if I had a gun for protection, it would end up being used against me. We do have a pellet gun and this worries me enough. It's kept up high and out of reach of our toddler. It wouldn't kill her, but could take out an eye. We use it to scare the bears that sometimes hang out around the house.
A couple of our friends hunt deer, but they use bows—although this is a whole other area of controversy since this method doesn't always get a clean kill.

So how common is it that a 'law abiding citizen' would carry a gun on them going to work? going to the pub? etc..

If you're out and you get into a heated exchange with someone and you just pull a gun on them... that can't be a good thing...

And how often are children accidentally shot? I know most would lock it up, but that is a problem we don't face..

    God Bless America

    And thank Christ for Australia...
Here in Michigan if you meet the legal requirements to carry a concealed weapon, you cannot take your gun to:

Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

    Sports arena or stadium

A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

    A hospital

A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

    A Casino...

To answer more of your questions, producing your firearm in a "heated exchange" will immediately put you in violation of the law and you would be in a heap of trouble.. You are only allowed to produce your weapon in an extreme instance of life or death.

You mentioned about children.. Guns should always be locked up when not in use. and if you are raising a child in a household where guns are present the children should be taught firearm safety and more than anything be taught to respect such a dangerous thing as a gun.

I grew up around firearms. I am proud to say my parents did I fine job raising me. No one was hurt by firearm in our home. Any parent that is worth a damn should be able to prevent any gun accident just by there example..

And I believe car accidents probably kill more children every year than guns ever would.. if you are really concerned about children dying at the hands of a man made tool, quit driving them around...
None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe that they are free.
