the graphics guy just told the truth.  unfortunately in today's world that got him fired.
I don't recall him ever cheating.  The organization, maybe, but even then "Spygate" is a bit of a crock. It was never illegal to videotape opposing coaches signals, but there are designated areas to do so and the Patriots did it outside of those areas. What the hell does it matter where you do the taping if the taping itself isn't illegal?  "Defaltegate" has been scientifically proven to be a crock of shit.
What got the graphics guy fired is being a butt-hurt little baby and putting the integrity of the network at stake, not because he was "telling the truth."
Yeah defining Spygate as "cheating" is a big stretch. It was breaking a rule. There's a difference, but some folks just won't acknowledge that fact.
I thought they were caught filming the Rams walk throughs days before the SB?
That was reported by the Boston Herald from the infamous "unnamed source." No evidence was found and the Herald retracted the article and issued an apology for running it.

    From Eric's link above:

May 13, 2008: Roger Goodell shows footage to media.

Though Goodell and the NFL did destroy the initial wave of footage, he at least learned from that moment. After meeting with a former Patriots video assistant named Matt Walsh — a man who claimed to have evidence of serious filming violations — Goodell determined that Walsh did not in fact possess such evidence.

And before Goodell spoke to the media in New York about his meeting, he played the footage provided by Walsh to the assembled media.

The NFL plays footage provided by Matt Walsh to the media prior to a Roger Goodell press conference in New York in 2008. (Photo by Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

And that was, according to all confirmed reports, all the NFL ever had on the Patriots. Footage of coaches standing on the sideline, giving signals. Footage that would have been legal to obtain if it had been filmed from a location “enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.” That was the violation the Patriots committed. Filming from the sidelines, instead of a room with walls and a roof, went against what the NFL wanted to allow teams to do.

It's funny how Belichick, Brady, and the Patriots were never "cheaters" until Roger Goodell (from Buffalo area, college near Pittsburgh) became commissioner.  For whatever reason, he has something out for them.  Two very sad attempts now to make the organization into a case study.

I've never cared about any of these stupid "-gate" controversies. For starters, I just hate how "-gate" has been made to be a suffix for a controversy as if the Watergate scandal was about water. That's so dumb. As for delfategate and spygate, (and even bountygate with Saints), I really didn't have much of a problem with any of them. To hate on the Patriots or call them cheaters for those dumb "gates" reeks of jealousy.

But just because I don't think their "gates" are a big deal, many people do. And if you're going to defend them, you gotta come up with something better than suggesting it's not cheating, it's just breaking a rule. What the fuck? Lining up offsides is breaking a rule, but not cheating. Roughing the passer is breaking a rule, but not cheating. But trying to get unfair advantages by spying or tampering with equipment? That's cheating.

There's the thing, do you know what Spygate really was?
They didn't "spy", they just taped from the wrong area on the field, an area that had been legal up until that season. Taping the Jets sideline wasn't illegal, it was just not allowed to be done where they did it, it now had to be done from a location “enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead." (See the post a few above. Basically they changed the rule that you had to tape from someplace like the press box and not the sideline, but the Pats still taped from the sideline. SO t was a violation of a rule , as opposed to cheating which is doctoring the system somehow...there is a distinction.

Famously Bob Kraft asked Belichick in the wake of things on a scale of 1 to 100 how much advantage was there taping where they were caught, Belichick replied "1". and Kraft told him "you're a real schmuck".

They never taped any opponent practices (Sorry Marshall Faulk), its just once something gets in the media folks believe it as fact, like Chris Mortensen's tweet that "11 of 12 footballs were below allowable PSI" in the deflategate aftermath. That was not the case, and Mortensen has said he got bad info but of course never deleted the tweet claiming to not know how.

But they didn't spy or tamper with equipment. Videotaping was legal, they just did it outside the designated area defined by the NFL. If video taping itself is legal, why does it matter where it's done?  That's just breaking a rule.  Not even gonna talk about the footballs (I assume that's what you mean by tampering with equipment).
I totally agree with you on the -gate suffix.  It's so overplayed and stupid!! Like you said, Watergate wasn't a scandal about water, it was the name of the damn hotel!

Eh whatever ya have to tell yourself. Like I said, I have no problems with the Patriots' alleged cheating. I respect the hell out of the Patriots. But that may be the Stockholm Syndrome talking because I'm a Dolphins fan.

If anyone should appreciate them it's you. They're the new Yankees!

Okay maybe you won't appreciate that but that cuts deep with some Patriots fans. Many Patriots fans I've interacted with remind me of late 90's Yankee fans, which is funny because most Patriots fans are likely Red Sox fans too, and there's nothing they hated more than having Yankees fans looking down their noses at them. Now they do it to everybody.

  • I heard the head ref for the Super Bowl has a preference for the Rams. Watch for the Pats to have to beat the refs and Goodell too. Whats the over/under on penalities and yards on the Pats? Anyone? And who does Belichek bench as a game time decision for who knows what? Anyone?

I’ve got 0-0 in my work square betting pool. I never win but it definitely makes the game a lot more fun. Would love a 10-0 first, 20-10 half time, 30-20 third and a 60-50 final.
I was once at a bar, where the pool was at least $1000 and the same guy won every fucking quarter and the final because of some numbers like those. the bar was not amused

reminds me of the St. Paul pre-party where I won like 3 t-shirts, 4 posters and a hoodie.

  • I like this prop one, made me laugh  (btw, take the penalty minutes)

    Which will be higher?
Bruins vs. Capitals total penalty minutes +100
    Rex Burkhead receiving yards -130

Well I gather then the Patriots must have had control over what Hernandez does in private. Amazing!

That is why I only join a pool that changes numbers every quarter.

0-0 sucks, 9-9 sucks... So on and so forth but I did win one year with a final of 7-5.
