The odds of a defender (or any player) on a 4-win team winning MVP are pretty slim. Your team should also win for you to prove to be the most valuable player in the league. Take Garrett away from the Browns, they drop from 4 wins to what maybe 3? Take Maye away from the Pats they drop from 13 wins (going on 14) to what, maybe 6?
Do I think Maye has had the best season of anyone in the league? It's close. He's definitely had one of the top 5 seasons of any player in the league. Maye, Stafford, Smith-Njigba, Garrett and either Taylor, Cook or Nakua would be your top 5 players this season.
From that, MVP should come down to Maye vs. Stafford. Arguments can be made for each. I stated my case above; I give Maye a slight edge currently (a week ago I would have given edge to Stafford). Could it flip back Sunday, possibly.

IF you are going to use a terrible organization against Garrett shouldn't you use a terrible schedule against Maye?   I'd go with Stafford and Garrett but that's just me.

I mean, there have been exactly 2 defensive players in history to win AP NFL MVP (Alan Page and I Don't Card Them Taylor), so odds were stacked against Garrett anyway, but his team is 4-12. So, while he's a lock for DPOY, he doesn't have a sniff at MVP. If the Browns were 12-4 and winning most games like last week's 13-6 quagmire against the Steelers, then Garrett is in the conversation. 

As for holding the schedule against Maye and giving a nod to Stafford, conversely you should also compare their weapons, and Stafford is throwing to Nakua and Adams while Maye has Diggs and a bunch of #4 or #5 type receivers. Those things kind of cancel each other out in my opinion. 
Stafford may still win it, but he has fallen off in the most critical part of the season, and his team has gone from a firm grasp on the 1 seed after week 15 to the 6 seed as we enter week 18. The loss to Seattle is not on Stafford, but the brutal loss to Atlanta Monday is largely on Stafford.

All the shows were saying Maye "cemented his MVP" or whatever because of his game against the Jets. That's such an encapsulation. Patriots played the Mr. Softee schedule. Doesn't mean they won't go to the Super Bowl but let's not make such a big deal about 6 TD's vs. the Jets. I'd go with Stafford. The Rams would be in the top spot without some fluky losses (yeah, Jordan Davis blocked FG included).

No, I'd say Maye has done more against a really weak schedule.  They only played 3 games against teams with winning records and one of them was the Steelers.   They played more games (5) against 4 of the worst teams in the Jets, Raiders, Titans and Giants. Their schedule was putrid. Impressive to win as many games as they did but let's look at it under that lens.  Meanwhile the Rams will have played almost half their games against playoff teams (8 currently and possibly 9 if the Ravens win this week).

I know the Jets SUCK but 6 TD's in the NFL vs any opponent is impressive.

I dont think they should look at schedule difficulty when deciding mvp.

I do wonder if they give it to Stafford just as a nod to a vet.

The Jets are close to an NFL record with 0 interceptions. And it's a 17-game season now! (16 so far - they effectively already broke the "record") They are horrible.

Saying the Jets "suck" is an insult to suckers all over.

Random Rule Changes - some I thought of and some I've read about or they've been proposed:

• If you return a fumble or interception for a TD, you get the points and keep the ball.
• If you fumble the ball out of the other team's end zone, the other team has to make a 2-point conversion to get the ball.
• If you punt, kick-off, or throw the ball through the goal posts, you get 1 point.
• Instead of onsides kick, you get a 4th & 15, or better yet a 4th & goal at the 15.
• Draft order: #1 goes to the team with most wins after being eliminated from the playoffs.
• Illegal contact/defensive holding - 10 yards instead of 5, but NO automatic first down - such bullshit you get a first down on some lame IC call on 3rd & 23.
• Offensive pass interference - still 10 yards but also loss of down. Why should you get the down over?

One thing I want to see... is if you get a half-the distance penalty toward your end zone, the balance of the penalty should be tacked onto the first down yardage.  
*If you are at the 10, 1st and 10, you get a holding call.  Half the distance to the 5, then the first down distance should be extended 5 more yards so it would be 1st and 20 from the 5.  

I would also like to see some sort of version of the college OT.  Let each team alternate starts from their own 40 or something.  Going for 2 is mandatory.  If players bitch about a game potentially taking too long, then have the 3rd OT or later start from the red zone/20 for each team.

100 percent on the half distance penalty?  Why should you get less yards because you are close to your own end zone.
