  • bringing pete into the discussion is a smoke screen. pete blogged openly to his readers, i was able to read it, weeks in advance, and said what he was doing and why he was doing it. he was sexually abused as a child and was researching for his book. Its been proven, he didnt buy or do anything illegal. in fact, its been proven the opposite, he essentially admitted to something he DIDNT do, which was to buy illegal images. These arent suppositions or opinions. these are the facts as reported by legitimate news sources and anyone wishing at that time to pull up his blog. Pete was researching for a book. pete said what he planned to do, and then reported his findings. He was open and honest about it, and every investigative journalist in Britain has come to that same conclusion. He admitted what happened to him as a child, and in turn was exposing the light on and researching for a book about it and his life, pete didnt cover it up. He was open and honest about both the abuse he suffered and the abuse he witnessed online.

The sandusky paterno case is a hell of a lot different. in this case there is actual abuse of children witnessed by people who should have known better, and when they witnessed or heard about the abuse did nothing. In this case, no one was honest. Sandusky abused real people. And paterno, mcqueary, the AD and president all knew things were going on, did nothing to expose it, and outright covered it up.

I agree. If pete had been a nobody he'd be in jail. But because he's in one of the most famous rock bands of all time, investigative journalists did their job and found out the truth of the matter, and that what was reported about what he was doing and his motive were completely ignored and distorted in the main press coverage.
  • with pete, i think its quite clear, tommy didnt come from thin air. i think he's tommy. and in the run up to the bust, his good friend committed suicide after admitted they were abused. in an effort to expose the dirty side of the internet, pete visited these sites, and wrote about it. he even admitted that upon viewing these sites he got hints of a flashback of abuse he recieved as a kid. So i guess it was benefitcial to him and his mental state and recovery. as i said, i was at his blog and saw him writing it, day after day. talking about the outrageous and disgusting things he saw, and hoping to bring some sort of exposure of what was going on and how easy it was to access these sites. It wasnt like he was championing what he was seeing. he flat out, posted what we all think about the subject, that those images are criminal and disturbing. how that connects to this case, where a real crime, multiple crimes, were committed both legally speaking and ethically speaking, is beyond me

Seems like you make some decent points but let me introduce you to someone. musicismylife, this is brevity, brevity this is musicismylife. Feel free to get to know each other.

Just because you tell people you're going to do something illegal before you do it, it doesn't make it legal. In cases of child pornography there ARE real people ACTUALLY being abused also. Those kiddie porn pictures aren't CGI or something. The reason it is illegal to go to those sites is to cut out the support/income of the people doing the actual abuse and profiting from it. By paying for a site like that you are financially supporting the abuse. He did pay to enter the site, not knowing it was a government sting, so in his research he was supporting the very thing he was speaking out against. He said he was acting as a vigilante, but made conflicting accounts of what he was doing with that information. In one statement he said he didn't reveal his findings to authorities out of fear of prosecution, in another he said he contacted Scotland Yard but had never been contacted back. It's all fishy, but regardless of why he did it, he shouldn't have done it.

As for it being a smoke screen, I don't necessarily have any love for Paterno. I can honestly say I've never watched a Penn State game in my entire life, and here in Texas the name Paterno carries very little weight. I'm just saying that we do pick and choose who we bury and who we forgive, that's the only way it connects. I don't forgive Joe Paterno, just like I don't forgive Pete Townshend. Sure Pete may have been researching internet porn problems, but what he did was still irresponsible and stupid. If it hadn't been for the fact that the site was part of a sting, he would have financially supported child pornographers for the sake of an article and his own personal therapy. And I can understand that last part, but it probably would have been better to see a therapist than check out kiddie porn to induce flashbacks. Who made him the internet kiddie porn police? Apparently the real internet kiddie porn police were doing a competent job if he got busted by their sting.

    P.S. I don't know brevity either.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
  • at every juncture of the penn state scandal, child abuse victims were told their feelings and experiences and safety doesnt deserve to be heard, to be acted on, or to be sympathized with. Thats not a good legacy for any university to have. each person passed the buck to the next person. no person took responsiblity for it, took the reins and said, no we dont want this to happen in our program, university or community, its unacceptable. not one person did that. no person decided to follow up on how the kids were doing. no one felt it neccessary to punish someone who commits such a crime. Each person involved viewed that the higher ups should do something, and that they had no responsibility. Each person seemed to think that organizations are paragons of good and that if you tell someone something that justice will be swift. in this case justice didnt arrive at all, i dont think it has in 2012 either. Its like some cop commiting police brutality, and then a coworker being told about it, then the coworker going to their boss and then the boss going to his boss. each person passes the buck. Nothing is ever done.

How the fuck did Pete Townshend become part of the discussion over Joe Paterno’s death?? The case of Pete Townshend and the case against Jerry Sandusky are so beyond anything close, it's ridiculous to even mention the two in the same breath.

The mindset of some of you here is idiotic at best.

    RIP Joe Paterno

It's because in this thread honoring the man's life. Some douche bags had to jump in and bring up the Sandusky case. Pretty sure there is a whole thread devoted to that.

A lot of dopes will remember him for his mistake but the majority of intelligent people will remember him for the good he did for thousands.

    Afterimage

    Suddenly-
    You were gone
    From all the lives
    You left your mark upon

    I remember-
    How we talked and drank
    Into the misty dawn
    - I hear the voices
    We ran by the water
    On the wet summer lawn
    - I see the foot prints
    I remember-

    - I feel the way you would
    - I feel the way you would
    Tried to believe
But you know it's no good
    This is something
    That just can't be understood
    I remember-
    The shouts of joy
    Skiing fast through the woods
    - I hear the echoes

I learned your love for life
I feel the way that you would
    - I feel your presence
    I remember-
I feel the way you would
    This just can't be understood...

    Cry for Victims, Not Paterno

"Nothing in his life was more important than his grim, cowardly silence. There is no counterbalancing the moral ledger, or any mitigation by anything related to football. For years, he looked the other way while children were being assaulted, and his program was being used to enable the crimes."

“Every adult has a responsibility for every other child in our community,” Penn State trustee Kenneth C. Frazier told the New York Times last week. “And that we have a responsibility not to do the minimum, the legal requirement. We have a responsibility for ensuring that we can take every effort that’s within our power not only to prevent further harm to that child, but to every other child.”

So there will be tears, now. Many will come from under-informed students, willfully-ignorant alums, and Pennsylvania residents raised to worship a fraud. There will be grandiose, sanitized eulogies from every media corner. A Disney Requiem.

Even as a victim, I couldn’t disagree more with this position. It shows ignorance of the facts and a lack of objectivity.

Will you just stop or bring it to the other thread?

You are pretty low, bud. We got your point(way too many times). You THINK Paterno is responsible for someone else's crime blah blah blah.

I know a couple obnoxious individuals that keep hammering a point(in the wrong place) that don't really have any friends in real life. Just sayin..

what's unpleasant about hating a man who allowed child rape to happen? why not expose him who what he really was- an accessory to hideous crimes.

Joe Paterno aided and abetted the rape and moslestation of vulnerable children.

    Should he RIP?
