He messed with the story too much and made changes from the book that were unnecessary. The first part was good enough but as the films went on it became more about show than substance.
i loved the films but understand your point..different from the books ..<img src="http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx46/tremors25/thefixerthrilla1.gif" align="left">

Same here...I think there's some nice nods, in the Extended cuts to the stuff that was left out of the book. Some Bombadil quotes/gifts from Galadriel and stuff like that. I think the Fellowship is still my favorite. I didn't need the comic relief from Gimli throughout the other 2.
Also, see why they did Saruman's death the way they did. The return journey to the Shire could've been a whole other movie.0 -
i guess if they made lotr page for page it would be 30 hours long<img src="http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx46/tremors25/thefixerthrilla1.gif" align="left">

ive read the lotr several times over the passed 20 years, and i LOVED these movies. You cannot expect him to fit EVERYTHING in. Plus, id have to admit, at times (actually a lot of the time) tolkien is very long winded, so i didnt mind a lot of what was cut. In fact i loved how Jackson pulled from the Silmarilian and the appendices to expand a bit more (for example aragorn talking about beren and luthien in the extended edition before hitting weathertop)
if anyone wants a bit of "light reading", i recommend the Silmarilian, awesome tale about the history of the elves and the creation of middle earth. to me, after reading this the lotrs made much more sense.
As of right now, I am still on book six of Tolkien's 12 volume history of middle earth. HE WROTE SO MUCH about this stuff! Hobbits, in the grand scheme of things, are only a small chapter in his vast world of middle earth...

I'm also reading that one right now, just finished the chapter of them making for Weathertop. Bingo and Trotter, it's so interesting to see the story grow. From them running into Gandalf on the road, and that changes into the a black rider and how the changes just keep snowballing until he got to where lotr ended up being.0 -

also picked up the history of the hobbit, a two volume set: mr baggins and the return to bag end. havnt read these yet, but i will make sure to do so before the movie comes out next year. apparently its got all of the alternate versions like the history of middle earth vols 6 - 8. ***also includes the original chapter where bilbo meets gollum. Tolkien changed this later on to make the lotrs flow more consistently.it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...0 -
did his son carry on writing after his fathers death?...i think most of the volume history books after a few are his sons...but i might be wrong<img src="http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx46/tremors25/thefixerthrilla1.gif" align="left">

He compiled them and made some adjustments to make all the stories jive up the best he could, far as the Silmarillion goes.0 -

As far as movie adaptation of books go, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best ever, in my opinion. Especially the extended versions which are a must-see (just make sure your butt is comfy).
Minus Tom Bombadil (which probably would have required a fourth movie to fit in) the changes to make a theatrical version seem warranted. Considering the entire movie is over 11 hours long, they crammed a good deal of content into it.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

This is going to be amazing.Last read the book probably 20 years ago,but had read it a number of times,it is going to be a kindle buy before December 13.
I think it is amazing how Peter Jackson has been able to bring books alive, books that I never thought I would see on film.

in the original didnt gollum give him the ring for winning the riddle contest? i once read something like that. changes the whole context of the story, especially the lotr0 -

dont forget, they completely blundered into the first chapter, an unexpected party.
they were merry, they sang songs, and they were goofy as hell. But when push comes to shove they fuckin dominate in battle! i have 100% faith in peter jackson behind this. he's gonna do it rightit's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...0 -
Guy Gavriel Kay who has written some fantastic fantasy fiction himself helped with some of it. I know he helped the writing with the SIlmarillion I'm not sure if he had input on the others though.DewieCox wrote:theserialthrilla wrote:did his son carry on writing after his fathers death?...i think most of the volume history books after a few are his sons...but i might be wrong

I think Guillermo del Toro is a good director, but I'm glad he dropped from the project. Peter Jackson was destined to direct this. It wouldn't be the same without him.0
