The line between Republican and Democrat seems mighty thin these day.

It would be more justifiable to call him a Republican then a Marxist.

you choose to live in the midwest, black people don't choose to be black - there's a major difference here.

My point is that you are justifying an inequality based on past influence. I don't lament it. I've worked in high cost cities and decided it was more cost effective to move to an area with a lower cost. I didn't wait for someone to fix it for me.

I think his point is that, relatively speaking, there is no inequity in your example.

but then you could move into the city and take on the characteristics of someone in the city, and look down on people from the country if you chose to. once again you have the privilege of (re)presenting yourself in this matter, outside of michael jackson there's little a minority can do to change the color of their skin.

So can anyone else then. Trust me, there are a lot of people with different skin color that would be able to fit in better in New York then me, especially if they have been living there their whole lives.

I would have to learn about fashion (only year I was in fashion was 1992 when grunge made flannel shirts cool). Change my accent (not too tough but I wouldn't have an east coast accent ever). Develop a more aggressive persona (not easy as I"m pretty laid back). Get used to living around millions of other people with nowhere quite to go (that would be very difficult). But I could probably do it although I would rather not try.

But if I can overcome a disadvantage, I think it's disrespectful to suggest someone else can't just because of their skin tone. Why can't anyone change their characteristics to fit an environment they are striving for?

As I look through this thread we've discussed social class, gender, sexuality, then race. At each turn you two have offered very little substance in your responses to other and my posts (the Beavis and Butthead-like Bam...Home Run to a one line simplistic response is a perfect example of this). If we are talking Marx then social class is the key issue that in a post-Marxist moment gets played out via gender discrimination, sexual preference discrimination, and racial discrimination. I understand that it makes things easier to believe that everyone is out to get you, and that people offering these critiques "hate white people" or are experiencing "white guilt" especially if you don't like to think (presumably because 10 seconds of critical thinking would take you down a path that you don't want to go).

However, that shit isn't reality. Class Warfare, now a popular Republican term, is exactly what the hell has been going on for the last 40 years via neoliberalism - giving the rich more money, while convincing the poor and middle-class that they are stealing from each other. But to be critical of it then would be just simply seen as complaining. Now that enough people have gotten screwed over a system that is always in the vision and benefit of the rich they've rightly started arguing for change, and that is characterized as class warfare. Well excuse me if I don't feel sorry for the overwhelming number of rich people who got what they got just because they were born in the right circumstance (in other words they didn't earn it, or lucksacked their way to there present position), THEN (and this is the important part) institute rules to make it more difficult for them to fall and others to rise. That's what this is all about. It's not about hating rich people, or white people, or men, or straight people, it's about seeing an inequitous social situation driven by the greed fostered by neoliberal capitalism and saying let's think about what's going on and maybe find a better way to do it. Too bad the socialist/communist/Marxist President we have sold out.

if you read the context of that quote it was basically talking about the privileges straight white men overwhelmingly enjoy vs. other social groups - there's ample evidence of this and just looking at the census that came out this past year would reaffirm that. of course that would mean reading my post critically, and not just copying and pasting something that would actually support my post just a bit above and saying that it works against it. in the absence of any substance people apparently start flailing wildly...

You belittle all of those who have worked, risked and won with your "ample evidence" talk. At least all the white males that have dicks who are winning.

Seriously look up the numbers most of the very rich did not risk and win, they were born into the right circumstance and just lived off their trust funds. Again, go ahead and work hard to try to achieve, but why continue to create rules to make it easier for the children of the rich to do nothing but be rich? Of course this would require you turn off Fox News or conservative talk radio for a second and do some research - I won't hold my breath.

Seems to me, by your reasoning, that if you are in the category of "white mAle" but were STILL unsuccessful then you must really be coming up short. Mirror time eh?

As for one generation risking and working extra so their kids can possibly have an advantage, head start, shot at a "better" life, well I call that family.
Sounds like someone wants a 100% death tax. What political "spectrum" does that fit in? Glad you didn't hold your breath, or speak condescendingly to class.
