Some famous mastering engineers would "sign" the records they mastered in the run out groove, kind of like a painter signs a painting. For example, the "Robert Ludwig" version of Led Zeppelin II sounds AMAZING if you can find one. They are highly prized by collectors.
Look for the initials "RL" carved in the run out grooves on both sides. The sound is TOTALLY ROCKIN'!!
Surpasses even the MoFi pressing IMHO
The George Piros "GP" pressing of "The Yes Album" sounds great too.0 -

Different Mike Richter. I believe the 8/23/09 show and poster were dedicated to him.
Besides that, I'm pretty sure MR stands for Mr. Rogers in this instance.0 -
The Amongst the Waves green single says Unity on it. No message in the b side.
If you picked up the rsd DEVO Live 1981 Seattle it has the following messages:
Side 1: It's time for Devo
Side 2: Man is when man thinks
Side 3: Toil is stupid
Side 4: Devolution is real
The White Stripes single from rsd has some messages too.0 -

In my copy, I can read something very similar to an R and somethig very similar to an L inside the space of the bends of a big S... don't know if my copy is from Robert Ludwig master but it does sound awesome....
Edit: Still don't know if the one I got was mastered by RL. But mine is an Atlantic release, don't remember the code, and was printed in the USA, so I don't know which pressing it is, and which edition, but anyway, it might as well be the one mastered by RL, and still sounds great...Post edited by javis el errante on... And the classic Led Zeppelin III (apparently most pressings have one message or the other in the deadwax, but not both):
SIDE A - DO WHAT THOU WILT
SIDE B - SO MOTE BE IT

photogirlliz wrote:I'm new to Ten Club (and new to vinyl), so this may be a silly thread...however, today as I was unwrapping my new Pearl Jam Twenty record (
) I happened to look at the matrix number etched on the run-out area of the record and noticed a peculiar message of "1 2 3 o'clock 4 o'clock rock". I was a bit surprised, so I looked at the others and noticed there were 'hidden messages' on all of them. This made me take a look at my other PJ records and, low and behold...there were messages on some of them as well!
Here's what I found...
Eddie Vedder-Ukulele Songs
-Side A - WITH LOVE TO LEILA AUSTIN & EDWARD LEE. ENJOY YOUR RIDE.
-Side B - DON'T DELAY, LEARN TO PLAY, START TODAY.
PJ-White Backspacer
-Side A - GRAMMA MARGE, DAUGHTER OF PEARL 1918-2009.

-LP 3 Side A - OUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT: ASSISTING TO FREE THE WEST MEMPHIS THREE
-LP 3 Side B - LIVE ALOHA EVERYDAY. MAHALO NUI LOA .... PEARL JAM
The original pressings I have of Vitalogy and Yield have nothing on them.
Has anyone else noticed this? If so, what have you found?
This is just a re-post. I don't know how to transfer my post here other than copy and paste.
This was your thread you started originally so you get the bump.
It is incredible that your post is written and described pretty well like mine. I just spent 2 hours looking at my records and writing down on paper what I want to type.
Recently took out a few singles and for the first time I actually read the writing/etching/inscriptions on the run-out groove for each side of the record.
Noticed some sides had sayings and others had random letters and numbers.
For example on the Backspacer LP
Side A has "Gramma Marge Daughter of Pearl 1918-2009" and "www.gzvinyl" inscribed.
Side B has "GOLDEN" and "RJOKVHJ Mr. Forever..." inscribed
Curious if others have different writing on their vinyl and if so - What does it say?
Here is a list of records and what I see inscribed/etched in the run-out groove on each side.
Devil Doll
Side A- Better Things and random letters/numbers
Side B - Devil Doll and random letters/numbers
2012 Live Alpine
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
2009 Touring Mist
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
2008 Single
Side A - GOLDEN
Side B - GOLDEN
2007 Annual single
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
2005 Little Sister/Gone Single
Side A - GOLDEN
Side B - GOLDEN
1998 Christmas single
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
History never repeats Annual single (can't remember the year received)
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
Happy when I am crying/REM Live for today single (don't know the year received)
Side A - random letters/numbers
Side B - random letters/numbers
LB
Side A - "For the league of crafty Fulmonologists" and "Golden"
Side B - Surf is where you find it - Gerry Lopez
Vitalogy
Divisions 1 thru 4 both sides all have random letters/numbers
I hope this Post is understood by you all. It was really cool to go through my records today. I saw the writing on the records before but really never read it because it was just numbers so I thought it was like a serial number.
It would be very cool if there are different inscriptions on others records.0 -
jshin wrote:-decodified- wrote:hopefully all the records have the same message otherwise this will become a madness... :P
Haha... Could you imagine... All of those poor folks that would actually have to open their vinyl...
You are exactly right.
I would like to go further and ask Why has no one commented on what is written on the benny deadwax ?(just learned what deadwax is 10min ago;)
Imagine opening up the benny with a message..... :corn:
So it would be very easy for anyone that has an opened benny to post here and say if there is/isn't writings on the deadwax.0
