Former X man John Doe still making a name for himself
By Jay N. Miller

You can forgive John Doe if his head is still spinning. His original band, California’s rootsy punk-rockers X, just returned from three weeks opening Pearl Jam’s stadium tour of South America. Two days later, Doe and his own Americana quintet commenced a tour of small clubs.
John Doe headlines Brighton Music Hall on Dec. 5 and his ninth solo album, “Keeper,” was released earlier this fall on Yep Roc Records. The Brighton Music Hall show starts at 8:30 p.m. with opening sets from Robert Ellis and Marc Pinansky. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. (Check www.brightonmusichall.com for more information.)
“We went straight from South America to Chicago,” Doe said, while traveling between Cleveland and Pittsburgh tour stops. “We didn’t have any rehearsals – but that first sound check was a really long one.”
Doe is an Antioch College graduate who went to California and founded X shortly after meeting Exene Cervenka at a poetry reading. Eventually the two songwriters married, and by about 1978 X’s way of melding country, blues and folk elements into their punk rock had brought them to the forefront of the Los Angeles scene.
The marriage fell apart in 1985, and as X wound down, Doe became more in demand as an actor. His film credits include “Salvador,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Wyatt Earp,” and “Boogie Nights.”
Doe began releasing his solo albums in 1990, pursuing a more rootsy, often acoustic-based sound, and quickly became a favorite on the burgeoning Americana scene.
Doe is married again and has three daughters and a home in the Tehachapi Mountains of northern California. There have been occasional X reunions, including earlier this year when the original foursome – including drummer DJ Bonebrake and guitarist Billy Zoom – did a national tour and played their 1980 album “Los Angeles” in its entirety.
Doe, 57, has also kept busy, including the 2009 “Country Club” album on which Doe and the Canadian roots group The Sadies combined for a collection of country songs. Earlier this year, Doe released an album with singer/songwriter Jill Sobule.
“What drew me to Jill was everything that makes her the fine songwriter she is,” said Doe. “Her humor, her vulnerability, her gift for terrific melodies and her intelligent lyrics. And, we get along well together. She’s constantly forgetting things, and I’m constantly reminding her not to leave her suitcase on the curb, for instance. She’s really into connecting with her fans with Facebook and Twitter, while I could care less. So, it’s a good pairing.”
Doe’s album “Keeper” is a vibrantly rocking work, with several memorable songs. There’s the tart humor of “Never Enough,” which he recently performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” There is also more of Doe’s finely detailed portraits of working-class Americans struggling with their lives and relationships, such as “Giant Step Backwards,” “Walking Out the Door” and “Cottage in the Dale.” Perhaps a newer facet is the truly affecting romance in songs like “Don’t Forget How Much I Love You.”
“Lyrically I think this one does have much less loss and and longing,” said Doe. “You always want to try something different. If you’re not experimenting, and trying new things, you can get to sound stale. I think the biggest difference here might be that the love songs are a little more satisfying. The characters in them are rewarded: they get and receive love. Still, I don’t think they are soft in tone, and they still have an edge to them.”
Doe’s touring band is pretty much the same as his band on the record, with Dave Carpenter on bass, Stuart Johnson on drums, Cindy Wasserman on vocals and Maggie Bjorklund on pedal steel. There will of course be a focus on songs from “Keeper,” but Doe said that the group will do selections from his past albums, as well as some X songs. Looking over the variety of songs and moods on the new album, Doe admitted he doesn’t try to limit himself.
“I don’t really calculate how many of what kind of songs I want on an album,” Doe said. “There is not really a theme or anything to the album as a whole. If you’re specific in each song about what you’re writing about, I think that kind of a varied palette can work.”
The Pearl Jam connection with Doe and X began in 2003 when X opened a handful of West Coast shows for the rockers. Doe and Eddie Vedder became friends and have worked together from time to time, on the tune “Golden State,” for example.
“Cindy and I played at the Pearl Jam 20 Festival in Wisconsin earlier this year,” Doe said. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to do the South American tour this fall, because I obviously had my own record to promote. But I realized we could do both, and I’m glad we did because it turned into a fabulous adventure.
“South America has a kind of freedom and openness we don’t have here anymore. It was just nice to be somewhere without all the paranoia and distrust we have had.”
Doe recalled the enthusiastic South American crowds: “We did wonder at first why our songs sounded so slow, playing in those huge stadiums. But the crowds were very quick to let you know they appreciated you. In Lima, Peru, we were playing ‘Nardia’ and halfway through it the crowd was singing the bass line back at us – it blew my mind.”
This summer Doe and X will be playing on Pearl Jam’s European tour.
