:D Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. In my family it has always been a time to come together and enjoy what we have both in good times and not so good.

And the food- oh the food!

I prefer Thanksgiving to all other holidays, myself! It's the holiday truly meant about gathering together and giving thanks.

I like the holidays... I have come to completely despise the crass commercialism associated with it... especially Christmas.
I'm glad Jesus isn't around to see what we are doing in celebration in His name. My best guess... He'd weep.

Me too Brian...And I always loved it down here in Florida because we look forward to a little fall weather to alleviate the melting heat...things turn real nice around Nov/dec. And this year is the first time in years i've lived in a neighborhood decent enough to have guests over, so its a HUGE potluck this time in our back yard. Cant WAIT!

I do too, mostly for the lights and the delicious scents in the air, and the fact that we actually have some "weather" here for a bit!

It's all so warm and comforting to me.

My sweetie turns 40 this Thanksgiving, so we're keeping it just the two of us.

(I have a feeling I'll need help cooking the feast this year :P )

I don't choose to see commercialism I choose to see giving :D
There is so much wonderful good generous giving done during the holidays,
often in the little things, heart to heart.

See. That's what it's supposed to be about. It's supposed to be about what you decide to do... not what is expected... or what you are supposed to do.
    ...
We pretty much quit gift giving at Christmas. I don't need nor want anything... and I don't want my siblings to go into debt, buying stuff for me. Give me a hug or grab me a beer while you're at the fridge... that's all I require. We just spend on the kids and focus on the company of our family and friends.
I'm hoping that Jesus would rather I celebrate His lessons of love and peace and good will towards men all year 'round... than, purchasing a sweater on the day after Thanksgiving for someone who is never going to wear it.

Us too - we don't celebrate Christmas anyway, but as far as gift-giving - nope. We'll give to the Salvation Army, make other small donations as we can, and also contribute to a bonus fund for the folks who run and protect our condo, but that's it.

Otherwise, it feels...obligatory, and overwhelming to boot.
  • im the complete opposite. When Thanksgiving rolls around the highlight of the season is getting to dust off my extensive collection of Christmas music, from Sinatra to Sufjan to The Beach Boys. Plus I just love the weather, the snow, when it does snow in my town, and curling up to a warm fire and reading some great book.

But sure, I remember as a kid, even at 10 or so, being completely in awe of Christmas and everything around it. Santa, and all that stuff. And this is explored in countless brilliant art, The Polar Express for one. Ive seen Home Alone 2 so many times, watching it I can quote every single line before they say it. "get your lyin, low down, four flushing carcass, out my door, one two three. Merry christmas you filthy animal, and a happy new year"

The tradition of it all is appealing to me. And even if you dont agree with or believe the whole religious aspect of it, I find all the stories about Jesus, and the annunciation and all that incredibly interesting.

Christmas is a time when people get time off work (I get the whole week between Christmas and new years), offices have parties, friends and families get together and have fun... how can any of that be a bad thing? Plus, kids love it. In my family we have a gift exchange rotation so we just buy one gift for one other person, different person each year, and then just buy gifts for the kids, who of course have a blast. And there are only two kids (my niece and nephew), so Christmas doesn't break the bank. What I don't understand is people spending more than they can afford. That's stupid, and I have no idea where people get the idea that that is something they are obligated to do. And if they do feel that way, it's nobody's fault but their own. Same goes for allowing Christmas to stress them out. That's all just self-imposed.

You know...thinking about this earlier...I can (try to) imagine how a life-altering experience such as Jeanwah has gone through could change one's views.

I have no choice but to respect it (her!), just as I do those who like to go all-out, or somewhere in-between.

Holiday times, like life, is what we make of it and what we reap, in some hopefully-positive way, from it.

Hopefully peace of mind and soul in the process.

    Thanks hedonist. :)

This year I'm going to be more at peace with it all, not let it bother me like last year. I still feel much of it is phony commercial materialism by obligation and paying attention to those who need help once a year rather than year round, but I'm letting go of this thread. I'll spend the time low-key as always, but this time I'll be in a better place about it all with much love among family and friends.

Peace to all, even you Speedy, who felt the need to dig this up before Thanksgiving.

Christmas was always my favorite time of year even into early adulthood. But I lost my father in December of 2007 and my grandmother in December of 2008, and it really has never been the same. Maybe some day it will be but not yet.

I'm sorry for your losses, especially hard at holiday time.

You have your memories of them though from your childhood Christmases,
they live on in you and the new you make.

Having lost many loved ones now the holiday memories of them are the most precious.

  • we do a gift exchange in my family, pick one name, yadda yadda yadda. I have received two "pushy" emails from my mother this week asking for our christmas lists so she and others know what to get.

IT'S NOVEMBER 8TH. Jesus H Christ. I'm 38 years old. I'm sorry that I don't have a list of wants. I don't give a shit. I love giving, because I put a lot of thought into what I get someone. I personally don't care what I get. I feel greedy making a list. Escpecially now that I have kids. I feel like saying "just get me a $50 Toys R Us gift card" and I'll spend it on the kids. But as if they don't get enough as it is.

If 10C had gift cards, I'd ask for that. $50 worth of PJ boots. :D

I love christmas, now, because mostly having young kids. But my drunken brother in law makes things a bit sketchy. He ruined last year's dinner. Falling all over the place, yelling "you're not my family! I don't have any family!". Nice. If he does that in front of my kids this year he's going to get a christmas ham right up his ass.

I totally love Christmas because of all the wonderful made-in-China presents made from plastic junk that everyone will buy and then throw away and the buy-buy-buy commercials on TV and long lines at the stores and the wonderful feeling of being close to people pushing and shoving in lines and the... oh... oops... wrong thread.

I love online shopping at Christmas time. The only way to shop for gifts this time of year! It's actually a pleasure. I can't believe people still go and do battle at the malls!
