No interest in Christmas

The older I get the less I like Christmas time. I don't get depressed or anything, I just see it as a diversion and an obligation to spend money. It's what it's become that bothers me; the need to go shopping, the obligation to giving lots of gifts which is usually a bunch of stuff that no one needs. The media shoving the commercialism down our throats. The radio stations playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving. I've resorted to calling the holiday "Giftmas" because that's how society has exploited the holiday.

If we could just get back to the basics of being kind, respectful and peaceful; what the holiday is supposed to mean, I may be more in the spirit.

I know exactly how you feel. This isnt the same holiday I remember as a kid or even 20 years ago. I feel that sooner or later they are gonna start advertising Christmas after the labor day weekend. It has gotten completely nuts. I feel that the commercialization of the holiday takes the spirit I use to have out of it.

That's why I laugh at those people who claim there is a 'War On Christmas'. It's a 'War For Money'. That is why retail companies changed their advertisement from 'Christmas Sales' to 'Holiday Sales'. The want Jewish dollars, Muslim dollars, Hindu dollars, everyone's dollars.
And there isn't a law banning the singing 'Silent Night'... if people are pissed because little Sally's 3rd grade class can't sing it... pull her out of the tax funded public school system and send her off to a Christian/Catholic school where she can sing it all she wants.

So, my daughter's school holiday concert is coming up but after last year's I don't think I want to go. I was in a wheel chair at the time, so between being pushed to her classroom to meet up with her classmates, then pushed to the auditorium, and then back to the classroom afterwards, I got to observe the masses of people. Cheery, these people were definitely not. Talk about miserable, stressed and tired looking. And it was everyone. It was such a dismal feeling I got from the frenzy of parents and families, as well as rudeness, pushing and shoving to get just the right photos of their precious children, that it was a total turn off and my daughter doesn't want to do it anyway, so...

I remember in the 4rd grade... the parents of this one kid in class made a big stink because he was in the back row and the parents demanded he be in the front row because of his superior singing voice.
He was in the back row because that was the row where the taller kids stood... and he didn't mind. His parents made him feel like shit.
Well, that and all the teasing he got on the playground after that.

I have no interest in Christmas as I have for the last 4 years....no lights, no tree nothing. Why I find no reason to do anything no one will be here we vacation elsewhere and besides only the children want lights etc but they WON'T help....until then everything will stay dusty in the attic. I stayed on topic. :D

I love the idea of going on vacation for Christmas. Some year, I'm gonna convince the family to do it.

Spirit of Christmas ... is giving

this done as much for the giver as for the one who receives

"Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish. Christmas, in short, is about the only chance a man has to be himself." ~Francis C. Farley

What kind of person are you? This the power we have to make Christmas meaningful

i have no interest in christmas this year.

i don't think i am even putting up my tree this year. nobody but me, my dog, and my band would see it, and i would have to take it down again in just over 4 weeks if i put it up today.
when I saw this yesterday I wanted to respond but didn't.
I thought about you more than once.

You might want to put it up for your friends and dog ... celebrate them in your life
the love and support they give 365 days a year.
The magic of the music that you create together.

A tree, I have found kindles much, most especially a childlike joy from deep within.
A wonderment that has long since left.

I think your dog will enjoy that vibe in the room and the cuddling of Christmastime.
I think you might too ... I hope so.

I'm OK with that logic as long as the state provide vouchers in lieu of the tax money that is sent to a public school. It's win / win.

Otherwise, as long as there is a 200 foot Christmas tree on the White House lawn, perhaps the few Scrooge's that make a huge stink about the holidays can suck it up and perhaps try spreading cheer and enjoying themselves for a change.

I thought about this a few weeks ago about giving. Well I give ALL YEAR LONG, I don't have to wait til this time of the year to feel the urge to give. Only exception Floridas Cushmans Honeybell oranges they ONLY are inseason from Nov-Feb otherwise I'd give out those throughout the year. I'll give to the men and women at the guard gate, mail lady...she loves to leave Snoopy dog biscuits....and the men who pick up the trash..recycle.

It's meaningful to us we just go elsewhere to get whatever meaning we want and even if we stayed home it would STILL BE MEANINGFUL to us. Ex one way is we can take a horse ride around our neighborhood or just come out to wave to the decorated sleigh rides they had here last week. We each can make it meaningful in our OWN way either with decorations or absolutely nothing at all...its neither a state of negativity or a dislike of the season for me...we've been through ALL the positive one can think of...I'm changing as I evolve.

The OP might just be happy in their own ways about Christmas without judgement.

Actually, it is up to each person to decide if they even choose to celebrate Christmas at all. Stick that one in your pipe and smoke it.

The taxpayers are paying the state and will be put in jail if they don't. The state is redistributing the taxpayer's money into schools that for the most part are failing. Why shouldn't someone have the option to get a voucher that is for the exact same amount that a public school receives?

I'll concede the Xmas tree argument.

    Yes exactly ...
it is up to every individual to make Christmas
meaningful to themselves and their families in their own way.

Is it judgmental to assume those buying gifts are somehow wrong?
    I think it is because
one can not look in their hearts and know what giving means to them.

And yes most people give all year long.

A simple joy for me is watching the people I love enjoy a gift I pick especially for them.
I put my thinking cap on and try to find something special.

I love it all though! the lights, the tree, the music, new family memories made,
the traditions in food and gatherings.
It is a big part of my life has been my entire life ... 55 Christmases this year!

I celebrate the birth of Jesus
and I rejoice in the celebration of what his birthday means to others.

I think the main thing is it is a happy time of the year ...
and the quickest way to happiness is to do something nice for someone,
    however small.

It is wonderful to end the year on a positive loving note and hope that carries
    through to the New Year.

Good for you I gather that's the kind of person you are. Im what I am a good person and I don't care what others think of what's meaningful or not so meaningful to me. In fact I want to one year NOT GIVE any gifts at all instead give myself to others in MORE NEED of help during the holidays.....volunteer my time. That to me would be more meaningful than giving or getting any gifts, tree, lights or decor during these holidays.

I'm happy it's 78 degrees outside, sunny and tonight during my boy's football practice it'll drop down to the 50's, windy down by Boynton Beach and I won't think much about it being Christmas....just staying warm. :D

i dunno, i think dipping ice into liquid to watch it dissolve is like watching frozen austin powers getting dipped into the warm liquid goo phase to defrost him...

i think i might try that...if i can get my hands on some flavored booze for the christmas season.

I will have to respectfully disagree. For the last 12 years I've had to, at my business location, put up a tree because the customers expect it. I inherited a tree from the previous business owner, and every year I dislike having to put it up because I don't feel anything inside about it. I usually play Pearl Jam or NIN when I do it, and can't get it done fast enough. This year a customer/helper brought in a little live pine and I was so grateful that I didn't have to put together that darn artificial tree.

The dog won't care about the tree (unless he wants to do what dogs do on trees). All he will care about is being with his owner and that is independent of any particular day of the year.

A tree, I have found kindles much, most especially a childlike joy from deep within.
A wonderment that has long since left.

I think your dog will enjoy that vibe in the room and the cuddling of Christmastime.
I think you might too ... I hope so.

This year a customer/helper brought in a little live pine and I was so grateful that I didn't have to put together that darn artificial tree.

um... I meant the doggie would enjoy the cuddling :?

We always have a fresh tree, the smell so lovely like orange.

Perhaps a young person who enjoys the decorating could put the tree up.
It might be fun for them and could earn a small bit for a gift for another.

You are free from a chore and someone else has a joy! :D
