The older I get the less I like Christmas time. I don't get depressed or anything, I just see it as a diversion and an obligation to spend money. It's what it's become that bothers me; the need to go shopping, the obligation to giving lots of gifts which is usually a bunch of stuff that no one needs. The media shoving the commercialism down our throats. The radio stations playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving. I've resorted to calling the holiday "Giftmas" because that's how society has exploited the holiday.

If we could just get back to the basics of being kind, respectful and peaceful; what the holiday is supposed to mean, I may be more in the spirit.

I totally agree... my family is very tiny, don't need a special occasion to gather ourselves up, we see each other on a daily basis, for better or worst, most worst lately, all raised as catholic, none of us gives a damn about religion, christ and the such, it's only about the presents, which I hate, and in my country, xmas is during the summer, I hate the hot weather, and I hate the xmas food, basically, because is a tradition taken from the people of the northern hemisphere, so all the food contains many calories and is prepared and aimed for cold weather... I ain't no grinch but give me a break...
Oh man how have I never even considered that? Christmas in the southern hemisphere...it's freakin' summer, man! Just don't feel right. :D

Another thing that's pushed down our throats is that the Christmas tree is put up in public schools around the country and only in the last what, 15 years, have they mentioned and discussed Hanukkah. A pushed upon ideal that we must celebrate late December with gifts, a tree, and an old bearded man dressed in red. And get this, some institutions are talking of taking out the part in "Twas the Night Before Christmas" that mentions that Santa smokes a pipe. Because smoking is bad!

Why is it that if I don't want to celebrate the holiday, that society forces me to, regardless?

I also teach my daughter to give during the whole year to those less fortunate. People need to know that those in need are in need the rest of the year too.

I'm not sure how anyone can really push christmas down your throat. Just because you don't like it, doesn;t mean everyone has to stop doing what they are doing.

As for your last statement, absolutely. I'm sure you are a terrific parent. Christmas is just a time to help highlight those in needs and begin the giving if you haven;t already done so.
Positivity is the best parenting skill, one often forgotten. The bright side shines
on everyone, it can be addicting, it can be healing, it can be bonding.
I say just be glad people are giving. Whether that is their Christmas way or everyday.
It really is all good. :D just let it be good.

It does seem freaky to think Christmas in summer but I guess it's all what one is used to,
    grow up with too.

There really is nothing like Christmas lights that burn a hole in the snow though.
If one has never seen that one needs to. Colorful cups of snow :D I miss that here.
So pretty. It's a dandy pretty time of year whatever the weather.

i've gotten a christmas card from Australia. the first ever i've had a christmas card of a beach santa with a kangaroo & koala bear & santa running to the water.

ya don't need reindeer. ya don't need a fucking snow sled. in this one country santa sells his frickin butt on the corner. i've saw the card from when i was a young teenager and a naval officer brought it home.

  • I'm doing nothing.

Well no... husband and I going to Key West for a week and a half. Coming back in January.

But there will be no celebrations of any kind. Not interested.

The idea of Christmas is so fucking annoying now. Three months of Christmas music and Salvation Army vultures clanging their bells everywhere I go and tacky decorations all over the place and today I went to the fucking liquor store and there was a fucking Doo-Wop Quartet singing Christmas songs by the check out.

I really wish we could just make Christmas go away for a few years and we might actually enjoy it when it comes back.

While it is important to be a "trooper" at Christmas so happiness can be shared by all, don't think down on the thought of not feelin it this year. I'm with ya 100%. I saw a guy wearing a shirt today - it said "Merry Friggin Christmas". I couldn't agree more. Tough year, and coming off such a pleasurable holiday like Thanksgiving, Christmas feels like it's evil henchman villian arch-nemesis. I wish this could just be "Thanksgiving 2". Screw the gifts and the stress of what to buy, and who gets what and dealing with lunatics in the mall and stores. I have 3 kids, the littlest is so excited --> but it has ZIPPO to do with Christ, baby Jesus, a manger or the 3 wisemen. It has zippo to do with anything related to gratitude, health or loved ones. Candy , stocking stuff and a Wreck It Ralph book. Bless his soul, but man...what a drag.
I hope your holiday is a great one. I hope you have peace and receive some good will as well as perform some. Let's hope 2013 is better for everyone.

Yeah, I love how we lie to kids about Santa Claus and Jesus being born on the 24th. Makes them stupid enough to believe that lowering taxes will lower the deficit.

It would make me drink either more or less.

Christmas sucks. It's been ruined by shameless commercialism and has no meaning anymore. Just proves that the only REAL God of the Republicans in money.

It's why I won't buy any gifts this year and instead spent it on a vacation to a resort in Key West where I'll hang out by a pool with a book. (ok, the pool will be filled with naked men, but that's not the point).

 You are funny, in the good way. ;)

I don't have kids, but if I did, i would not tell them that Santa is real. I'd tell them the truth, and that it is fun to make believe that Santa is real - that it is fun to pretend that he's real. For kids, using your imagination is fun and can create wonder. No need to lie for kids to experience the kiddy Christmas joy. I don't think so, anyway. I knew Santa wasn't real at 3, yet the childish Christmas joy remained. I'm glad my folks didn't try and convince me of something that was clearly not true just to get me excited.

Then there is the Jesus aspect... we weren't religious. I think it's cool that there is a rigious Christmas, and a non-religious Christmas. Everyone wins. ;)

I personally like a holiday that involves gift-giving because it's fun and I like it when people enjoy the gift I give them. But I don't like that people feel obligated to do it.

I'm all for fun, but at a time and place of my own choosing; not just on a day that certain segments of society deem as days that you must have fun regardless of your true feelings/beliefs. That being said, on Christmas I expect I will have fun watching movies at home, studying, and having the opportunity to sleep late and not be on a schedule, maybe get started on my taxes (and yes I find it 'fun' to have it out of the way and not have to worry about it later).
