I'll second the Project Debut III. I was originally planning on spending much less, but after debating this for a while I decided to up my budget and get the Project. I'm glad I did, I love my turntable and I don't get the feeling I'm killing my vinyl when I play a record.

If you plan on hanging on to your vinyl, I would suggest doing what you can to increase your budget and get something at the low end of the audiophile spectrum.

If there is interest I have a Pioneer PL-500 direct drive table. It is not top of the line... second I believe. I acquired it with some other gear over the summer. It has what looks like a Stanton 500 gold body cart on it. It'll need a new stylus for sure. I could let it go at a very reasonable price. I would pack it properly and what not. It will be a far better table than any of the cheap plastic usb tables.

Amazon has it for 69.00, after much consideration and help from this board I finally went with this one. There is a higher end model at amazon for 218.00, but I'm just starting in this new turntable world and figured it would be a good starter for all my unplayed PJ records and now the new Chris Cornell, can't wait.

This is the same turntable that I've been using for almost a year now. I know it's not top of the line by any means, but it does the job and I personally think it sounds great. I paid $100 for mine at my local record store so in my opinion $69 on Amazon is well worth it.

I'll echo this. I have the same turntable as I didn't want to spend too much for my first one. I bought it earlier this year and I think it's a good starter, is easy to set up and use, and sounds great. I have it hooked up directly to my living room surround sound receiver.

I've heard/read nothing but bad things about the Crosley models.

It took me about a year to finally decide on the Rega P1...than I got pissed off because I have no idea what kinda amp (I heard Marantz PM 5004 is good?) this turntable needs. But once I figure that out than I will have to figure out what speakers to get!!!

I always told myself, once I buy a house Ill be ready to commit...well I moved into my house 10 days ago and still no equipment!

Thats a lot to spend on an amp. You can get something much cheaper and it will work just fine. Hell, for that amount, you can buy an old Marantz receiver from a dude on craigslist (which is not a bad idea at all). That has an amp built in. Bt don't drop more on an amp than you did on your table. Rega has an amp of their own for about $150.

Are you looking for a turntable that doesn't need to be connected to anything in order to be heard?
If so, you'll need one with some speakers. Otherwise, a turntable with a pre-amp will need to be connected to something in order to hear it. Whether that is a computer, a receiver, etc. is up to you.

Heisenberg's photo is classic! I believe you answered me with a pic after a post I posted about me bitching about people with their camera phones at shows! I'll echo this. I got the Project Debut III for my first turntable and it's awesome. It doesn't have a preamp so you have to connect it to a receiver with a phono input. I ended up looking for a while and buying a retro 70's Onkyo receiver off ebay for around $90 and use it exclusively for the turntable. Sound clarity is way better than anything I've heard off any other amp I've had. The Debut III runs about $350 I think. I found mine for $275 so I didn't mind spending a little more for a quality item.

My feelings on people looking to get into turntables:

-New ones with a USB port are really only good for transferring Vinyl to MP3

-Top of the line new turntables are amazing but will cost a fortune

so

Go vintage! Look for Pioneers from the 70's, you can great deals on these and so many were made that parts are readily available. I have a Dual 1219, sound is amazing.

You can also get a good quality vintage receiver from the 70's that has built in amps in the phono ports.

I know ebay is hated by some on here but for 70's hifi equipment it's hard to beat. Perfect working cleaned up models are available at cheap prices.

But a good turntable will only sound as good as the speakers you have. Speakers can be pricey.

For now I bought a Pro-ject Debut III - no complaints here. You'll need a pre-amp though (another $160)

I just got a pro-ject as well. I ordered it last night. I'm so super excited about it. I was going to be fine with the audio-technica one...but I took the plunge and splurged on a better brand.
