Why can't we have Do Whatever the F You (legally) Want Day?

Why are people so caught up in what other people are (legally) doing?

DWFUW Day!!!!!! or FU Day for short.

every day is FU Day ... if you want to celebrate it - go ahead ...

it's too bad that you don't get what the day is all about ... you may not agree with it but at least you would understand it ...

I understand it. Folks want to get other folks to do what they want them to do. Who cares if idiots want to go out and waste their time shopping instead of spending time with their families? And if folks don't want to work, don't. Go find yourself another job. I know. Easier said then done. So what? That's life. They should then be thankful they have jobs.

Stop worrying about what other people want to (legally) do.

EDIT: Though I am glad you got the meaning of what I was getting at.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I fully support people going out and buying products today and tomorrow. Saves them some cash and helps out a lot of businesses.

I don't support people acting like savages trampling people though so hopefuly there's none of that.

Like i said, I wait for months to buy certain goods on Black Friday that i want. It's nice to save a lot of cash on toys for myself and my family. You guys would rather people buy the same stuff at full price? You guys would rather businesses not get the shot in the arm they depend on?

guess it depends on which businesses are getting that shot, now doesnt it?

nope. all stores big and small need business. I've been picking up stuff on amazon all day, heading out to Target tonight, and going to hit some local stores tomorrow. I love Black Friday week. Loading up on gifts for others and for me. :D

It really doesn't matter, because all stores employ people. It would be really nice if all the independent small businesses got the huge influx in sales, but either way, Black Friday does its part in keeping people in jobs.

using the employment angle is like saying war keeps cluster mine employees working and cancer keeps pharmaceutical reps employed ...

the myth that we should disregard consequences in the name of economy and "jobs" is what has driven us to where we are now ... an unsustainable system where only the few truly profit while the rest of us are left to pick up the pieces ...

Hey, don't look at me. I'm Canadian. I just figure that it's weird for people to complain about how people need jobs and talk about not spending any money at stores at the same time. Plus, buy nothing day isn't "don't shop at big stores day." Right? I thought we were talking about ALL consumerism here, not just consumerism that some people think might not ultimately be good for society.

there are a multitude of people complaining about a multitude of problems ... they aren't always the same people ... i could pose that there a bunch of people complaining about debt in society yet they support the excesses of black friday ...

buy nothing day is about consumerism most definitely ... it's about looking at the holistic consequences of our consumerism ...

I have the convenient excuse of being sick...

    again :fp:

to not work selling my books today. I could also come up with the excuse of saying that what I really do is recycle used books but that would also be a flimsy excuse. The fact of the matter is, there will be people working at the store selling books and, as it is every year, this will be the biggest sales day of the year. Would I be bullshitting you if I said, "That doesn't make me happy"? No, believe it or not, that does not make me happy. Hyper-consumerism doesn't makes me happy. Money doesn't make me happy. Well being and being well makes me happy. Stay home. Relax. Have a day off. That's my advice.

I wish you all well today.

Honestly Brian, I think it's really sad that you feel you maybe need to justify running a used book store or make excuses for it or feel bad about it. Used book stores are a good thing in our society; I don't care what anyone says about consumerism. Some things are righteous, and used book stores is one of those things. :)

Thanks, PJ_Soul. I truth is, I don't have a healthy attitude toward money. My wife is much more pragmatic that we. She sees it as a tool and believes the more money one has, the more good one can do. (How she ever thinks running a used book store will meet that end is beyond me, but she does her best!) I need to go right now and call her and thank her for working while I sit here and mope. Truth is, I'd much rather be selling books than sitting at home being sick.

I think people who line up for savings early in the morning are nuts. That said, I think people who get up early in the morning when they have the day off are nuts.

That said, I scored a good deal on a cookware set in an Amazon lightning sale. Now, I have to learn how to cook ...
