Friday is Buy Nothing Day

Don't "buy" into the shopping frenzy! Consumerism is the problem, not the solution.

What is Buy Nothing Day?
A: Buy Nothing Day is your special day to unshop, unspend and unwind. Relax and do nothing for the economy and for yourself - at least for a single day. It's a reminder to stop and think about why you're spending. It seems like a simple enough challenge to try to go one day without spending, but in many parts of the world it would be virtually impossible if you consider your monthly bills that accrue on a daily basis as part of "buying".

Obviously, since you're searching for information on the topic, you know that Buy Nothing Day is growing in popularity every year, and since there really is no central organized group in charge of the "holiday away from the holidays" there are many interpretations of what it is and what it should be. See our links page to see some of the many variations of Buy Nothing Day.

Why should we buy nothing?
When it comes right down to it, it's not that we believe a single day without shopping makes a big enough impact in itself. But if we stop and think about it for a day, we might find out that we're more deeply tangled in the dragnet of consumerism than we imagined. This knowledge could be life-changing. If we disect our spending habits we'll see how we have a significant local effect. But we are part of the big picture as well, and if we take a stand others will as well, and we can see that impact on a global scale. If we buy nothing for just one day, perhaps we'll realize the true value of watching HOW we spend.

This whole thing is bullshit. 90% of the people who boycott on this day will be straight back to the global run supermarkets and megastores the next day. If you tell me to boycott supermarkets or other such monopolies that dictate food and consumer prices around the globe then I'm in. But a general boycott? No way. I do my hardest to buy from small independent grocers, butchers, farmers, etc. Boycott them? They suffer enough. Count me out on this one. A bunch of bored wannabe activists with nothing better to do.

Why do you need to be told anything? I'm spreading awareness. You vote with your dollar every day. It's up to you how much you consume, but as Americans, it's a serious problem and businesses use Christmas for nothing more than beefing up their bottom line. There's no peace, love and caring about each other when the holiday is robbed by consumerism. Do what you want but the holidays are supposed to have a deeper meaning than buying meaningless crap.

I love Buy Nothing Day. This Friday I'm just gonna sit around in my jammies and drink some cocoa. So glad I don't work retail anymore.

dude ... i think you missed the point ... first, i want to say that i commend you on your consumer choices ... ... second tho - the whole idea about buy nothing day is to raise awareness of the impacts of consumerism on culture and society and the day is chosen specifically because of the ridiculousness of black friday where people stomp over each other to buy a lot of shit they don't need ... it's about taking a step back and asking yourself if you need some of the shit people go crazy for ...

As some of you may know, I'm in the used book business. Friday will be- as it always is, our busiest day of the year. That does not make me happy. It never does. I will not buy anything on Friday and even though we basically recycle entertainment and intellect, I won't encourage anyone to buy books from me on Friday. I would be happy if it were a slow or at least normal day Friday... but it won't be.

Stay home and relax or visit with family and friends! :D

It just seems to me that the people who will boycott this thing are ones who could care less about shopping on black friday....and the ones who go do go and stomp over each other will just be happy there are less people to stomp over....

I plan to buy a ticket to the Nightwatchman gig... from someone in the line... for face value, only. I figure, Ben Harper will be there... hopefully, some of the other usual suspects. Whoever deides to show... it'll be worth it.
One thing I won't buy... a scalper priced ticket. It goes against the Nightwatchman... and the baby Jesus.

it is quite possible but i believe that the whole idea of raising awareness of the consequences of consumerism is a worthy reason to have a day like this ...

If Binaural was re-released on vinyl on friday....and let's just say Benaroya Hall....$15 and $30 respectively...I guess all the buy nothing on black friday people would have to stick to their guns and buy neither. Hey, I totally respect that.

Cincy - the purpose of Buy Nothing Day isn't to push sales from one day to another, but to curb our cultural meme of consumerism which has gone awry and led to big issues in our society. Your comments surmise the opposite end of the commentary, but also show how cyclical this problem is and only leads to continue the problems instead of alter them.

    Pillage
    Consume
    Discard

You are free. Keep working. It's good for the economy.

in all seriousness great idea, hope it catches on...

on a side note, my favorite thing right now is listening to the constant bitching about black friday sales at midnight ruining shoppers thanksgivings...here is an idea DON'T FUCKING GO. They won't have it if you don't support it
