As some of you may know, I'm in the used book business. Friday will be- as it always is, our busiest day of the year. That does not make me happy. It never does. I will not buy anything on Friday and even though we basically recycle entertainment and intellect, I won't encourage anyone to buy books from me on Friday. I would be happy if it were a slow or at least normal day Friday... but it won't be.
Stay home and relax or visit with family and friends!
how about closing your store than? i have to admit that i am from canada and we never really had this whole back Friday thing. apparently this year in Toronto we are having like a black friday type of thing and to be honest i couldn't care less.

Sorry, Brian, my intentions are not to diss anyone owning a retail business. I hope you understand, Black Friday glorifies consumption and that's something I don't agree with.
Check out small business Saturday, it sounds like your day!

I would if I could but I work at my wife's bookstore part-time and her business partner would never go for it and my own business in a book co-op and I'm sorry to say the idea would not float their either. In any case, I'm happy when people come in to see us anytime- just not this Friday!

No worries, Jeanwah- no offense taken in the least! I'm totally anti-black Firday for the same reasons you mention!
And thanks for posting the small business link. My support of small business is long standing- even before I had my own business. Small businesses are generally all about local economy and good service. Big chain retail is all about seducing us into buying disposable crap we mostly don't need- a tangible kind of drug we keep going back for- tired of this one, gotta have another. I'll let Neil tell the story:

on a side note, my favorite thing right now is listening to the constant bitching about black friday sales at midnight ruining shoppers thanksgivings...here is an idea DON'T FUCKING GO. They won't have it if you don't support it

Three pages of people buying cable or wireless to comment on not buying anything on Friday. Nice!
Does that include those of us who have DSL and pay in advance?

Buy nothing day seems like an absolutely ludicrous concept to me when people are always going on about the lack of jobs and the bad economy. J men, I understand the sentiment, but inn the face of reality it's totally illogical.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
imo what's really ludicrous is willingly standing in lines for hours to jump into the chaos & traffic (compounded by hoards of greedy rude shoppers from the north) on black friday just to buy shit no one really needs
i've been making it buy nothing day for years...
in comparison having a peaceful, stress-free day is priceless

Hey we agree on something.
This is a ludricous concept to me actually. With some many people having the Friday off following Thanksgiving...this country being consumer goods driven...why the hell not go out and shop? That is what most people work for in this country isn't it? You work to earn money to buy shit you want? Businesses are trying to attract your dollar with exceptional sales. If someone doesn't want to go out and deal with it, that's fine. But saying there should be boycotts and all this shit....please! Stop trying to impose your "morals" on everyone else on how it should be a day with family and rest.
I'd like to see how many people around here that support ideas like this would actually do it if the 10c had a 50% off sale on Black Friday. :fp:
I'm not going extreme either way. I'm not going to shop at 5am, but if I need something, and have the time I may get it. I think the media is a big part of this frenzy that now exists. People have always shopped after Thanksgiving, but this extreme 'event' as it now is, wasn't always the case. The media stokes it with their footage of lines, and people being crazy and fighting over X-boxes.

I'll be buying a $hitload of things on Friday. Cheapest day of the year to buy movies, albums, videogames, etc.
Can't stand the boycott talk BS. I'm a smart consumer. Why buy movies i want for $20 each when i can wait til Friday and just walk in and get them for $5?

I recently read statistics* indicating that upwards of 250 million children throughout the world are enslaved in the process of making many of the "goods" we purchase. In keeping those children in mind, I will comply with Buy Nothing Day.

I'm in the market for a new TV also since I will be moving next month. I can't decide between a 55" or 60" Hmmm... And yes I will buy it Friday (hopefully online) if I can find a good deal.
