Yeah, I learned a few years ago just to go to shows solo if I can't find anyone to go. I've caught a lot more quality shows since then.

Prior to this year I'd only seen one show solo. In 2011 I've seen 8 shows alone (with two more upcoming); if I hadn't, I would have missed out on some of the best ones, including three Pearl Jams.

Exactly. I've given up going to the shows where I'd be the guy not enjoying it, and dragging people to shows knowing they'd whine the entire time. I'm having a blast going to shows alone.

Way too many to list. But here are some of the bigger ones off the top of my head:

    U2 (x1)
    Pearl Jam (x3)
The Tragically Hip (x25, maybe 30? I've lost count at this point. Best live band in the world...sorry Pearl Jam)
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1x)
    Wilco (x4)
    Bob Dylan (x1)
    Soundgarden (x1)
Guns N' Roses (x1: original lineup, opening for The Cult back in 1987)
    Midnight Oil (x1)
    Los Lobos (x1)
    B.B. King (x1)
    Radiohead (x1)
    Weezer (x1)
    Ben Harper (x1)
    The White Stripes (x1)
    The Black Crowes (x1)
    Blue Rodeo (x5)
    Sam Roberts Band (x4)

I could list more, but I'd be sitting here typing all night.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

    -Tom Waits

  • Their studio work is much better than the live show. One show was enough for me, the second and third were formulaic and dull. And I'm no fan of guitarists who spend an entire show watching their fingers, trying not make any mistakes; know your instrument, goddamnit!

Oh bummer... I don't care too much about guys looking at their guitars but I guess that's a personal preference.

Edited to add - You get a pass anyway for having the Dresden Dolls on your list.
Should have been twice, but I didn't go to my second opportunity since I couldn't convince anyone to go with me. I've learned the error of my ways and am willing to go to shows solo when needed. My new year's resolution this year was to go to no crappy shows (ie, Disturbed), and not miss good shows (ie, PJ, Liam Finn, Deftones, etc.). So far, so good.

    Disturbed? Crappy?

    Disturbed are really cheesy.

As many of you guys have pointed out, I think it's way better to go alone to a show than drag along someone who won't enjoy it. I have also been solo to a number of gigs (only downside is you can't rave about it with people who know what you're talking about afterwards!)

the raving thing is what places like this are for ;)

I get what you mean though..I was lucky enough to catch a few Foo shows this summer with fellow fans, and the feeling of talking to people who "get it" right afterwards when you're all still in that adrenalin show rush is great.

This is actually pretty easy for me to come up with! Since live music has really become a large and extremely meaningful part of my life, last year I decided to start a list of all the bands, openers, dates & locations of shows I've been to so I can have one big concrete list that I can keep on adding to and look back on! I'd say this isn't too shabby at all for a 19 year old who only started seriously going to concerts in late '09 :D :

(This list includes openers and festival sets)
    Pearl Jam (x2)
    Eddie Vedder (x2)

    The Who
    Inward Eye
    Dave Matthews Band (x9)

I keep a detailed spreadsheet so I'll always have a record of my shows, I went a step ahead by including known setlists, too. I can sort it by specific songs if need be. Of course I have a seperate page for PJ-specific shows so I know the playcount of any chosen song. It has actually become an obsession.
