I used to think there's so such thing as a bad show.

A show will never be any more than just 'good' if it has only one out of Given To Fly and Unthought Known.

If it lacks both, then it's plain meh.

    GEMMMMMMMSSSSS AND RHIIIIIINESTOOOONNNNEESSS!!!!!

I was lucky enough to have heard them both in Vancouver two months ago and Seattle two years before that. I think that Seattle show was the first time the song was played together as a band :D

I agree with the OP. It's a lame song that anybody could have written in thirty seconds. It's basically just an excuse to play nice and quiet and then get really really loud and make the crowd go "ooooooooooh". Apparantly it works.

    Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

The first comment...that's almost like saying, I don't like it because the music is too musical...it's a great song. in fact if it had been sung by a new band as their first single, it would've been a massive hit and played to death on the radio...which is why i am glad it is Pearl Jam's...some bands would give their left nut for a song like this...for Pearl Jam it just sits nicely in their catalogue of genius

I agree with you, there is a give and take about making the song a single. One hand, it would've been an epic radio single, but at the same time, it would've probably become as annoying as Mumford and Sons or Foster the People have become from the constant playtime they get. Maybe its better that its a well kept secret amongst us Jammers.

  • It didn't wow me until I heard it live at a solo show... but now, I scream the lyrics whenever I'm alone in my car.

I thoroughly enjoy all of the lyrics in UU, but these play in my head often (the last few are my ring tone):

Dream the dreams of other men, you’ll be no one's rival
Dream the dreams of others then, you will be no ones rival---you will be no ones rival

I am striving for this as a mantra... it is pretty powerful.

I couldn't have even come up with the TITLE in 30 seconds. There's some deep shit going on there in the lyrics.

He played it at the 6/22/10 Beacon show in NYC and led into it with the story of how he wrote it when he was in NY for the NJPAC shows. Said he was out partying all night with friends, went back to the hotel, couldn't sleep and wrote song while watching the sunrise over Central Park.

That being said....why the heck wasn't it released as a single??? I thought it was geared to be the perfect follow up to Just Breathe, and could've been their biggest hit since Last Kiss. But yet they chose Amongst the Waves instead, which is a good song, but not at all in the same league as Unthought Known. A missed opportunity I think.

I agree. I think it would have done very well.

Having said that, PJ hasn't always released singles that one would expect them to.

While I agree that Unthought Known is a superior song to Amongst the Waves, I don't think it would've performed any better as a single. Amongst the Waves at least has a very obvious chorus. Either way, singles (especially non-lead singles) are pretty irrelevant at this point in Pearl Jam's career.
  • Really!?!?! Have you heard that song live? I still get chills thinking about hearing at PJ20. I'm not one to try to pick a favorite song, but that song is awesome and is definitely one of the best off Backspacer.

Freaking great song! And they don't play it night in, night out. Didn't get it in Toronto on 9/12.

I'd love to hear them try and wear the song out live though! Could easily handle that over some of the ones they could probably play a little less ("Do the Evolution", "Even Flow", tons of covers...)

  • Sorry, don't mind me. I have a bit of a drinking problem. Don't even remember posting this. I just get bored and post stupid things. I am a big fan of the song. Especially after seeing PJ do it at MSG in 2010
