This is one song I could hear EVERY night, for the rest of my life.Don't come closer or I'll have to go0 -
One of my very least favoirite tunes from PJ. Boring music, cheesy lyrics.0

I love Unthought Known. To me, the lyrics aren't cheesy at all. I think it's great to see them come out of a sort-of comfort zone and use words like "gems and rhinestones" in a song. I never would expect to hear Eddie sing those lyrics, but I like it.
That being said, everyone does have their specific tastes and I can't fault the OP for it not being a favorite song. I know I personally couldn't care less to ever hear Last Kiss, Marker In The Sand, or The End. Not that they are *bad* songs, I just don't care for them.Star Lake 00 / Pittsburgh 03 / State College 03 / Bristow 03 / Cleveland 06 / Camden II 06 / DC 08 / Pittsburgh 13 / Baltimore 13 / Charlottesville 13 / Cincinnati 14 / St. Paul 14 / Hampton 16 / Wrigley I 16 / Wrigley II 16 / Baltimore 20 / Camden 22 / Baltimore 24 / Raleigh I 25 / Raleigh II 25 / Pittsburgh I 250 -
Unthought Known's yin is Given To Fly's yang...

This is a song that I wasn't impressed with at first, but it definitely grew on me, especially after seeing Ed do it solo!Chicago 2000 : Chicago 2003 : Chicago 2006 : Summerfest 2006 : Lollapalooza 2007 : Chicago 2009 : Noblesville (Indy) 2010 : PJ20 (East Troy) 2011 : Wrigley Field 2013 : Milwaukee (Yield) 2014 : Wrigley Field 20160

That being said....why the heck wasn't it released as a single??? I thought it was geared to be the perfect follow up to Just Breathe, and could've been their biggest hit since Last Kiss. But yet they chose Amongst the Waves instead, which is a good song, but not at all in the same league as Unthought Known. A missed opportunity I think.
I agree. I think it would have done very well.
Having said that, PJ hasn't always released singles that one would expect them to.
That is true. Its too bad it didn't have the same organic growth in popularity the way that Better Man or Last Kiss did without releasing a single. But I guess with Pearl Jam's last album being geared towards growing the fanbase, I think they were successful regardless. I can't wait to hear it again next time I see them live.Member Number: 437xxx

I agree with the OP. It's a lame song that anybody could have written in thirty seconds. It's basically just an excuse to play nice and quiet and then get really really loud and make the crowd go "ooooooooooh". Apparantly it works.0

The first comment...that's almost like saying, I don't like it because the music is too musical...it's a great song. in fact if it had been sung by a new band as their first single, it would've been a massive hit and played to death on the radio...which is why i am glad it is Pearl Jam's...some bands would give their left nut for a song like this...for Pearl Jam it just sits nicely in their catalogue of geniusBIG DAY OUT SYDNEY FAIRGROUNDS, SYDNEY, AU, Sun 26 January, 2014 BIG DAY OUT FLEMINGTON RACECOURSE, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, Fri 24 January, 2014 Eddie Vedder Solo, Civic Theatre, NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA, Wednesday 16th March Eddie Vedder Solo, STATE THEATRE, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Friday 18th March & Saturday 19th March ETIHAD STADIUM, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, Fri 20 November, 2009 NEWCASTLE ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE, NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA, Sun 19 November, 2006 ACER ARENA, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Tues 7, Wed 8 & Sat 18 November, 2006 SYDNEY ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Tue 11, Thu 13 & Fri 14 February, 2003 SYDNEY ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Mon 9, Wed 11 & Thu 12 March, 19980 -

I used to think there's so such thing as a bad show.
A show will never be any more than just 'good' if it has only one out of Given To Fly and Unthought Known.
If it lacks both, then it's plain meh.
