and now some sad songs on a happy instrument (the uke)
how he'd probably have to kill himself if he played violin,
heck he'd probably slit his wrists if he had to LEARN violin...
I think that's what he was talkin about as the Dude's cellphone kept ringing...
then, sometimes you have to go where your friends want to go (again, the uke) a happy tune (You're True?) and then near the end an aside like, "but this is where I get my way, where i get to bring it back to sad!"
It was MOST CERTAINLY Arc meshed with The Wolf!!!!!!!!
i didn't hear anything 'wolf' about it. i just listened to both arc and wolf to make sure i wasn't missing anything...it was ALL arc hearing it soundchecked earlier in the day gave me goosebumps, and then hearing it inside, with the lights turned down, with ed sitting to the side just wailing away...moved me to tears. that had to be one of the most moving vocal moments i've ever seen.
sweet god how i loved it!
the whole show was absolutely beautiful and seeing ed feeling as moved as we all were was wonderful. so much emotion in that room! i can't wait for the shows in berkeley to experience it some more
and definitely for those who haven't seen liam yet, be sure to not miss his set...ass kicking kiwi!

He looped Arc at first and then sang The Wolf live over it. It was hard to decipher but I promise yout hat's what it was. That's why he put the thing in his ear, I will put money he was listening to The Wolf to be able to put it over Arc. He could easily get Arc over Arc without anything in his ear. We were 4th row center and you could see it. Maybe we will never know for sure, but I would bet on it.

i suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree, in any case it was freaking beautiful
After last night I think "Pulling into Santa Cruz" gets my vote for side A of the next Christmas single...after all it does have the word "Santa" in it...
Just a few thoughts I haven't seen mentioned. They were handing out programs at the door. It looks like a Broadway playbill and says “Sniper” in yellow at the top. I think you had to be there relatively early to get one. It has the siloutte pic of Ed on the front. Inside is lots of info about Into the Wild, WM3, Body of War, Liam Finn. It also says the tour is dedicated to Evel Knievel.
Liam Finn was great. He broke his snare drum and brought it to the side. I think EJ asked if he wanted her to give it to him and he said, "No I want to make a spectical of getting it." At another point he accidently said "Santa Fe" then corrected himself. In one of his songs he sung part of "Dear Prudence". Great performance, I was totally mesmerized. Bought his cd about an hour ago.
When Liam was out there was a drum kit to the left and Ed’s stuff was in the back covered. I went to the bathroom after Liam, and when I came back the curtains were pulled. Tuolmne was played over the speakers as the curtain opened.
Walking the Cow was great. I don’t know if I have ever heard that song before. Great opener and I had chills, probably from being 5th row from the stage (Thanks 10 Club!)
He played “Man of the Hour” on ukulele. Sounded great. The sound there was amazing. Then he told the long story about ordering room service and said he was going to play some songs where there was no room service. Then went into the Into the Wild songs. Someone had yelled for No Ceiling earlier and he pointed to the ceiling as if to say, yeah there is one. When he played it a few songs later, he forgot the lyrics at the end of the first verse. I think he stopped right before “my heart will never be far from here.” Then he said he tried to give the guy a present but it was broken. He said it was a short song so he would start it over and nailed it. There were a couple of people around me who yelled the lyrics out for him when he stopped. “Guaranteed” was one of the highlights for me. No mistakes, sounded amazing. Millworker was also great. Spot on.
Before “Chicago” he said it was a song about how he lost his gf and job in the same day. He let the crowd sing some of Hide your love away and it sounded like everyone was singing along. For “Forever Young” he asked that it be made darker. There was only a light near his suitcase still on as he sang it. Also one of the suitcases was open and had black cardboard with white paper glued on it with lyrics written on it to some songs. One I saw was “Won’t Back Down”.
Before Happy Birthday, he tried to get the crowd to practice saying “McCready”. He was also smoking a cigarette when the curtain opened on the first encore and I could smell it. Made me realize how nice it was not to have smoking in the building. Also I bought a bottled water for $1.50! Before Lukin he said the next 2 were campfire sing-a-longs. He said he would play the first sing-a-long as long as everyone promised to sing to the second one no matter their political beliefs. My vote for the Arc/wolf controversy intro was that it was all Arc, but I could be wrong. It sucked that the guy yelled out “Let’s Party” right before Arc. Not that anytime would have been good to yell that out. Arc is cool from a technical standpoint and the meaning for those who died, but I would prefer a regular song.
It was cool to see the world premiere of a song, but trust me, no one is missing anything. It was nice for SC, but it’s nothing to write home about.
... In one of his songs (Liam) sung part of "Dear Prudence". Great performance, I was totally mesmerized....
OMG! Of everything I kept recalling about Ed, that's freakin right! That part rocked. Not that I knew Liam was gonna do it, but I got all kinda curious as he went back to the drum kit, and I'm all, "Huh, this loop is kinda familiar, bet he's gonna tap something here...."
Whoaaaza! Ye most rockinest Dear Prudence I've heard in me life!
It can NOT be said enough! Get in your seats for Mr Finn!
And stay there through Ed please! Wear a diaper!

Yeah it was great.
I wish I had not looked at the Vancouver setlists because I knew almost everything that was coming. I wish I had the willpower to stay away from this board for one freakin' day!

Heheheh. Yes. I had a web-head in my office on Thursday looking at the boards and I said, "I'm in a Media-Black Out! DO NOT TELL ME!" It was totally worth it for PORCH - SURPRISE! But it was soooo tough, Thurs nite... Fri nite... Sat... Avoid the pit, avoid the pit!
Pretty sure I can piece together what Berkeley's two nights gonna be, so yeah, now Ed's gotta surprise us, neh?
Main Set: Walking The Cow, Around The Bend, I Am Mine, Dead Man Walking, (I'm Open)/Man Of The Hour, Setting Forth, Far Behind, Rise, No Ceiling, Guaranteed, Millworker, Broken Heart, Goodbye, You're True, I Used To Work In Chicago, Driftin', You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, Trouble, Forever Young, Porch
Encore 1: Happy Birthday To Mike McCready (with Liam Finn), Society (with Liam Finn), Lukin, No More, Arc/The Wolf (?)
Encore 2: Pulling Into Santa Cruz*, Hard Sun (with Liam Finn and Eliza Jane Barnes)**
From where I was at (12 rows back so didn't have a really good look), it looked and sounded like small guitar (bigger than a baritone uke but smaller than a regular acoustic guitar) that had the same pitch as a uke but with 6 strings. The chording he was playing on MOTH looked to be guitar chords.
So maybe this is the uketar (the one that appeared on the 2007 holiday single)?
Did anybody else up close get a good look at this thing?
Got back last night from Santa Cruz still recovering from the weekend.
It was a awesome show! Our seats were not to good we had nosebleeds but just to be there was excellent.
Highlights for me were setting forth, no ceiling, guaranteed, walking the cow, man of the hour, trouble, lukin, arc which was just amazing!
It was a totally different atmosphere from PJ shows but it was a really nice experience. Ed was funny and the whole feel of the show was laidback and just made you feel like you were in his basement listening to records.
Liam Finn really blew me away he is full of energy!
Thank you Ed, Liam and cool people of Santa Cruz!
Time is not measured in years
that have passed but in love
that is gained...

I wasn't sure what the instrument was either but Man of the Hour was definitely one of the highlights for me. Between Bridge and other shows I've heard this song live quite a few times and honestly haven't gotten too excited about it in a while but Saturday night reminded me of the first time I heard it. Beautiful.
the sun has set, the sun will rise another day....

It looked like a guitelele, which is almost the same as a uektar...about a half-size guitar (maybe smaller - yamaha has it on their website), six strings (I was thrilled to see it! Yay guitelele!!!). Cute little thing. He played it in Vancouver...and somewhere there's a photo of it. Seattle Times website, I believe... an oversized uke with six strings... my guitelele is supposed to be sound like a guitar tuned on the seventh fret...something like that....
Anyway, glad to hear that you all had such a great time at the Show! Seeing Ed is such a treat!!
and I'm STILL reeling! What a fucking awesome nite......like you've already reported, Ed was amazing, spot on, all instruments in perfect tune, his humor, his opening act Liam and EJ were wonderful and I thought a rare treat (too often I find opening acts NOT good!) so that was cool! We had 5th row seats, close enough to see those smiling eyes and dimples!! While I live about 25 minutes north of Santa Cruz, his song about the town was incredible and moving.....thanks to those of you recalling some of the lyrics....very sweet. I lost a days wages to be there and I certainly don't regret it one bit! Seeing a few special girls, (shout out to Dolly and Lyd from Momma!!) was just that, SPECIAL!!!! All in all, my FAV day/nite of the year so far!!!!

I am pretty sure he talked about it being an electric mandolin. Or was that for a different song?
This was a amazon show!!! The Crowd was great....
Such a small place there wasn't a bad seat in the house.
Ed was fucking on the money playing.....
Set list was great, I am still at a loss for words....
Man this was worth the long drive...
Hmm, yeah, pretty spot on, ok ok -- but I think we'll really get the protest songs tonight/tomorrow! Wow, when he's not downing 2 bottles of vino, he can play those stringed things pretty damn well -- was actually surprised in a couple of places how well he played!
Was painful to see the black telecaster style Uke take a Dive!!! After the two numbers he put it down and promptly tripped over the chord grabbing for his other instrument and the little uke went CRASH! OUCH!!!
No Banjo at SC? Just saw he played banjo in Vancouver -- don't recall it in SC?
I don't think anyone has mentioned that he said he had skipped a surf to work out "Pulling into Santa Cruz." I never made it out to the water to see if there was anything worth riding. It was flat down along the bay Sunday morning.
And do get there early for Liam. Ed was fantastic all night, but Liam's I am Lightning/Dear Prudence was mind blowing.

it's now two days after the show and i'm still in awe of how much fun it was. i went with my wife, pulling into santa cruz a little early to pull some pints and shoot some darts at the poet & the patriot, just a few blocks from the venue.
there was some folksy guitarist singing who was just good enough to get me stoked for some better music later as opposed to irritated and prematurely drunk.
we made our way to the venue in time for liam finn & ms. eliza james. i can't recommend seeing them enough. liam has enough energy to fill a stage alone, but e.j. is a soft, pretty touch to his wild child energy. they were a blast. and he just seems super excited to play music. he was signing his cds in the merchandise area after the show -- how fucking cool is that?!?!?
eddie took the stage after a 30 minute break or so. the vibe in the auditorium was sublime...ed was that magnetic. he was really engaging with the crowd, appropriately & humorously dealing with cellphone rings, dumb-ass comments, flubs, etc. he's just a genuinely entertaining artist.
this show really reminded me of what a creative artist eddie is. from the setlist to how the stage is arranged -- small table to his right holding a machine that plays the background to 'hard sun', an amp behind him with a funky gold & black bat on it & a mellow backdrop that changes colors and, at times, looks like the sky on the cover of the 'into the wild' cd.
my favorite part was when ed got all experimental with arc. he donned a lab coat, just like the 'mad scientist' guitar tech on the stage and said he was going to do an experiment. he started sitting on stool in front of his recorder and soon stood, hopping all around the recorder and the mics in the area to make really intense, really cool, live music. the net effect, once everything is recorded and looped, is amazing and served as a cool backdrop for ed to take a moment to wave and look at the crowd before shimmying through the slit in the big blue stage curtains, vaudeville style.
my other favorite part, besides the whole show, was the santa cruz song. that was special. kudos to whoever remembered the lyrics. it's a really cool song and it made me and my wife think: hey, ed may move to santa cruz some day. he said he skipped having a surf to pen the song instead. he told us he hoped it was worth it. it was.
thanks to the ten club for the great seats (2nd row!!!)! for those of you thinking of going, DO IT!!! it's a unique experience for a pj fan. THANK YOU SO MUCH ed

yodamex makes good points about the stage setup and how the stage was arranged.
Another cool thing I just remembered was right before he played "No More" he said, "This is a true story. Unfortunately the last one was too." (In reference to Lukin).
I haven't seen anyone mention how Eddie noted that the show was supposed to be played in Portland but they could not find a venue. I'm glad they chose Santa Cruz...what a show!

I thought maybe I would try here as a last resort
I lost a tiny piece of plastic
tiny but very meaningful to me
the short of it
went to the show HUGE FAN for many many MANY years -
for the first time in all those years I made a valient attempt to meet Eddie and give him a thank you
miraculously was able to do so
was given a guitar pick by the man himself before the show
in the excitement of it all
LOST said guitar pick
maybe in front of the merch table?
its very clearly Eddies pick and is stamped
a shot in a million I know of having this return to me
but it means just that much that I have to try
Good luck...but I think your shot on finding someone who may have found it, is in the slim to none catergory.
