I can't speak of all unions...can only speak of the union I'm in (CUPE)...it's an absolute joke, if I had the choice I would not be a member.

I am of the mindset that if we had the right to choose unions would be more effective. This is why I believe the government here in Canada, business and unions have no problems with people automatically be enrolled in unions.

For the job I had in high school I had to be a CUPE member. It was brutal. It was super aggravating knowing that there were people who were clearly terrible at their jobs but since they were in the same pay grade as me there were making just as much as me and thanks to collective bargaining there was nothing I could do about it.
At least in Canada unions aren’t allowed to make donations to political parties. I have read about that happening in the US and it seems super crooked that unions can make donations to the politicians that have the authority to give them raises.

if you allow corporate donations, then Unions should be allowed to donate as well. Mine was the largest offender in 2010, giving 87 million. Ridiculous and if I could I would not give them a dime. But I like my job so I will continue until MN passes a right to work bill. Personally I would like to see all of it go away and only allow debates during campaigns paid for by the US government (house and senate) and the networks that carry them (general and primary presidential coverage)

Your government is dying of shame, remember that.

Not nearly the amount of shame that I felt watching John Howard kiss George W's arse at every available opportunity.
I can't go the library anymore, everyone STINKS!!

Of course, the real question is should corporate donations be allowed in the first place? The idea that a corporate entity can legally subvert the political process for its own gain is really unsettling. How can you have a legitimate democracy if corporate entities can literally buy candidates. Personally I'm still shocked that the US Supreme Court labeled corporations as being people under the law. That's utter nonsense! I can understand the pseudo person argument, but to say that a corporation should have a voice in the political sphere is just terrifying.

Both unions and corporations donating to politicians is crooked, but I think unions, at least public employee unions donating is a whole other level of crookedness since they are directly donating to the people who approve their salary. At least with corporations they are only donating on the event that the governement might help them out. But both are crooked which is why I am glad both are not allowed in Canada. Only individuals are allowed to donate, and only a couple hundred bucks to the fedaral party and then the same amount to their local candidate.
