    No no no...he didn't "walk by." He was five feet from walking in to a bar full of drunk Pearl Jam nuts. It was maybe the most clutch moment of my fanhood, but I stepped out to see him. He stopped and looked at me with a trademark Stone Gossard smirk, a look that said "here we go again." I returned the smirk, thinking of the good but passionate people inside, like Derek's friend, who would embarrass himself slightly by running out of the bar a few moments later to chase Stone and fortunately for Stone not find him. I imagined what a mob scene it would be for Mr. Gossard, visiting our city for the first time in 8 years, imagining a dozen future tour itineraries with Minnesota blacked out as he remembered getting smothered in a bar in downtown St. Paul. I also thought of myself, desperately feeling the urge to ask for a photo, an autograph, something.

    But from somewhere inside, I felt that small purpose turn into composure. Smirking myself still, I leaned in to Mr. Gossard and said: "you don't want to go in there. It's a 10 Club pub crawl. They'll tear you apart."

    Stone nodded for a moment and then broke into a laugh. He said "thanks for the headsup" and turned away from the bar, off to some safer locale. I gave him an innocent "have a good night" and went back inside to collect myself and wonder when again I would ever muster that much self-control. Fellow fans who were at the pub crawl might hear that story and wonder "what might have been" bad I not intervened. I too wonder that, for this is the story of the night I saved Stone Gossard in downtown St. Paul!

    don't get me wrong, joe, it was absolutely the right thing to do and i would think i would have done the same thing- it was only fair to him. BUT, it's a good story of course i will continue to poke fun at it for as long as i can.

    Side note: looks like the Stones will be playing here this summer. My buddy spotted a Stones billboard this morning near Blaine.

    yup, up on the strib site. they also say the rumor is they'll be playing sticky fingers in its entirety. this is a must see show, if so.

    last saw the stones in '94, only the third concert i ever saw.
