  • Thank you. Thank you.

On my 27th birthday, Whoever runs the PJ twitter account tweeted to make sure your ten club stuff was in order. Which I believe lead to the Europe tour.

Maybe Now on my 29th, we'll get some luck.
  • As far as Sherman goes and his "classlessness"

Maybe these networks shouldn't stick a microphone in their face moments after something happens. You know, when they still are jacked up.

I have no problem with what he did or said. If you're surprised, you havnt watched the nfl all season or maybe ever.

This guy took 22 points to say what I think you summed up quite nicely in 3 paragraphs:

Its quite possible that two things are simultaneously true.

First, sure, you stuck a mic in the face of a guy on the winning team at the end of an emotional thrilling victory, and boom, you got an off-the-cuff, emotional amped up response. It's very possible that his emotions were talking there.

But second, wow did it sound trashy as hell. Emotions or not, what about winning with class? Does everything have to be about pride and showing another person up? Who cares what Michael Crabtree said? Isn't the result more important? But nope, too many athletes have to go through this gorilla chest beating bullshit. And listen closely to what he said. Did he say "we're the best team?" Not really. But he definitely made sure to point out that "I'm the best corner..." Good grief.

So yeah, I'll excuse him if his emotions got the best of him, but I'll also say it sounded terrible and I'm really not surprised that a lot of people found it in poor taste.

(I secretly can't wait for the two months of no-football that the NFL so graciously gives America each year :))

Yes, that's what winning means in a sports competition.

Evidently. Richard Sherman cared what Crabtree said. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be focused on Sherman's reaction.

Yes, I agree. Crabtree ran his mouth, Sherman got results.

Didn't you hear? For a sport that only plays 17 games (+4 preseason) a year, we have to put up with it year round now. I'm astounded at the amount of year round coverage the NFL on ESPN, much less their own NFL network.

But somehow no one ever seems to hear about the multiple, multiple offenses/arrests/scandals that happen off the field. (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nfl/arrests/) Now that's class.

The NFL generates $9 Billion in revenue per year, and cities like Minneapolis still have to foot the bill for their multi-multi-million dollar (billion?) stadiums, that will only get used ~10 Sundays a year. But it's OK, football players with resulting brain damage just got a settlement worth a measly $170K per player. (not snark - this is not nearly enough to cover the damage caused and ensuing medical bills)

And don't even get me started on high school football...

...just doing my part to keep the MN thread at the top of the Porch Forum. Nice to have a little lively debate.

Happy birthday. Sherman was completely classless yesterday. I hope he apologizes. What a horrible way to represent your city and team.

Looks like you got your apology after all: http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2013/story/_/id/10324613/2013-nfl-playoffs-richard-sherman-apologizes-ripping-michael-crabtree

I'll dispute that. Winning does not have to mean showing someone up or being overly prideful. I'll even wager to say that to have pride in yourself requires you have respect for your opponents, even when they - gasp - say something you don't like.

You're misunderstanding my point. If the end result of the game is really what matters, then why was Sherman so focused on what Michael Crabtree said? Why didn't his comments focus on what his team did and not what he himself did?
    CM189191 said:

Careful with those gorilla comments. This man graduated second in his high school class and went to Stanford on a full ride.

I didn't call him a gorilla and my comments about his interview had nothing to with how smart he is. It has to do with this nonsense tough-guy BS that's too prevalent in sports culture today.

I can't really tell if you're disagreeing with me or not. Like I said, anyone shocked that an athlete responded in an amped-up way should look at the context: it was seconds after an emotional win in a huge game. It shouldn't be a surprise that he reacted how he did.

Belying that however, he looked and sounded like a classless egomaniac. Sports doesn't require trash-talk, tough-talk, chest-beating, or this Me-First attitude that is so prevalent in the NFL. And yet, here's another blazing example.

Two things can be true at the same time. He was set-up to make a dumb emotional statement. But he still sounded like an idiot.

Sober lockerroom advice from a veteran coach (in the offseason) would sound like this: "Get your head in the game kid. The fact that you apparently still needed to be vindicated by calling out Michael Crabtree on national TV after your team punched their pass to the Super Bowl speaks volumes about where your head is at."

This is the last I have to say on the matter. Please feel free to respond, then we can get back to regularly scheduled programming of convincing Pearl Jam to come visit the great state of MN. Where sports fans can debate in a reasonable, level-headed manner.

I fundamentally agree with your definition of winning, yes. But the NFL and in particular the media that covers it eschewed this standard long ago. They will continue to reward players like Sherman for these outbursts because while it may not make for good sportsmanship, it certainly makes for good entertainment and ratings. I would say your definition is more applicable to high school, college or intramural leagues.

The reason Sherman's response was so focused on Crabtree is because Erin Andrews specifically asked him: "The last play - take me thru it". She didn't ask about the game, or the team, she wanted to know how he felt about that final play. He was obviously happy to oblige.

I only mention the gorilla comments because Sherman rec'd a whole slew of racist feedback afterwards. You seem like a nice guy, and I didn't want you to accidentally lump yourself into that category with those fools.

And yes, I do agree with you - people shouldn't have been shocked by the amplitude of his response immediately after such and intense game/play. As I understand it, there is a mandatory ten minute cooling off period for players before they talk to the media in the locker room after games, but this does not include on-field interviews.

Judging from the apology today, it sounds like coach didn't wait until the off-season to set him straight. "He was really clear that the last thing he wanted to do was take something away from our team, what we had accomplished,” said Carroll.

It sounds like Sherman knows exactly what he's doing. And I would wager that if he were put in that situation again, he wouldn't change much. I guess we'll find out in a couple weeks.
