Seems like a by the numbers ballad to me. Locally, it will fit nicely on Snoozies 97.I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

First thought: "my lord that's an 80's sounding guitar riff in the middle"
Second thought: "this will be great live"
I can definitely understand the criticism that might be leveled at it, but so far, I enjoy it. I think the live version, as with so many PJ songs, will determine people's love or hate for it. Right now, I can definitely hear it being played well live.
I agree with you.. gonna be great live! Now, about that.. MN 2014 BUMP0 -
vant0037 wrote:adusick wrote:First off, yeah I like to hate on D's stuff, but I do it in good fun (most of the time)
Second - I tried getting into Butch Walker but all he was singing about was girls working at the mall, folding t-shirts and swooning over boys. Not my thing. Plus it's hard to find his music at the record shop, cause they're always out of the "Music From the TV Show One Tree Hill" album.
I kid, I kid. Plus, I give you plenty of ammo to sling sh*t back in my face! ("Oh you listen to Nine Inch Nails? You can't come out this weekend because you're painting your nails black and crying in your basement?" OR "Oooh look at how indie I am... I listen to bands that don't even exist yet!") There - 2 freebies for you D!Well said Dous....
I dont dislike NIN, I just didnt want to pay to go to the concert.
And, if I were to make fun of bands you like (which I wouldn't do) I would pick on that bubble gum, pop friendly crap you call punk. Jimmy Eat Ass or something? NOFX...more like No Talent.
But I wouldn't do that.
And, Vant.....c'men....0 -

At 5+ minutes? Doubtful.
I'm not sure how a band like Pearl Jam or the Stones or U2 or Neil Young etc can win any more. After so long, everything they do is overly-scrutinized by the hyper-fans that follow the band (that's us!).
If they release a record with a label of any size, they're sell-outs.
If they tour Europe and bigger markets in America, they're money-hungry.
If they write a song that's not angry or edgy or talks about such pedestrians themes as - gasp! - love, they're washed-up and soft.
At some point, we hyper-fans needs to take a deep breath and realize that after 20 years, there is little they are going to do now that will satisfy everyone or anyone. I predict Lightning Bolt will have it's high points and it's low points, depending on who you ask. It boggles my mind that there are people who really care if their shit hits the radio. Remember Ten?
This is one of those "end of the day" rants, but there has been an insane amount of bitching on the board about this new song and it's really fucking tiresome. If their music is so bad and everything they release is "cheesy," "overproduced," "ruined by Brendan O'Brien," "radio-friendly," "middle-aged," etc (all phrases I've read on here in the last day), then maybe it's time to move on from being a fan.
Pearl Jam, a band that writes music, will be what it is. Your status as a fan is up to you. Complaints, critiques and criticisms about their song-writing or their status as resident sell-outs or their touring practices are valid, but only superficially and in a limited way, because at the end of the day we don't have to listen! We don't have to be fans!
I'm guilty of it too, and so it's a fair reminder that complaining is fine, but at some point, it only serves to spread negativity. No one comes here to feel bad about their favorite band. I can't see the value in always complaining or why people with a choice in being here persist in it. Nothing personal to anyone here. But I hope we're all still finding a reason to love this band. If it's not "Sirens," hopefully it's something else.

Vant Rant!
It's all good man! The only thing I don't get is why this is in response to evenflow82's quote? I didn't see this as much of a complaint, just a statement that Sirens seems like a standard ballad, and it would likely be played on Cities 97. I'd have to completely agree with evenflow's statements! Not tryin to start a fight, the original quote just seemed like an innocent observation about the song.0 -

Ha, I'm used to getting it around here! I sometimes come off as negative when I am just overly blunt, usually for worse. :? To me the song is very adult contemporary sounding; certainly doesn't sound edgy or dangerous, but whatever, those days have been gone for ten plus years imo.

Touche...the comment came more as a general response to all the complaining about Sirens lately. It's really unclear as to what anyone expects from the band any more (and whether it's even reasonable to "expect" anything) and it's getting really old hearing all the complaining about the band. I've got a whole theory on the commodification of art according to the capitalist consumer in the world of global competivism, but I'll save that for my thesis.
Suffice it to say, my guess is "Snoozies 97" wasn't meant as a compliment about the type of music played on that station, but maybe that's just me.
So if I was presumptuous and it wasn't intended as a yet another complaint about the new song, my sincere apologies. Again, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular, but perhaps at the sentiment which was possibly in the post.
All things considered, I'm sure I've made my thoughts perfectly clear on band fan club members who's only activity is to register complaints about said band.1998-06-30 Minneapolis

Also, I like Sirens. and will probably like Lightning Bolt. I like Backspacer.

This is the song Doosie mishears and sums up Butch.
It's also where I get my little guitar thing from.
It's a highlight at any show.0
