the replacements have yet to play their hometown since their reunion, but chris reimenschneider put this in his strib entry today:
As for that long-awaited Replacements hometown gig – which many fans were bogusly thinking would be RTG (nope, having a sister on staff at the Current doesn’t get you that big a discount on a performance fee!) – look for an announcement soon on a mid-September gig at an outdoor venue that should give new meaning to “Swingin’ Party.”
so, target field has to be the place, yeah? two years ago it would have been hard to believe we could see the replacements play the ballpark before pearl jam did. but here we are.

    please play minnesota, pearl jam.

I don't think the replacements could fill a ballpark even in their hometown. It will probably be the Saints stadium.

Yea, I agree with that. I can't even name one replacements song I like. I've never understood the praise for them.

Slowly getting into The 'Mats more and more, and I DO understand the praise for them. Odd that they've yet to play MPLS during this reunion period.

Anyone else plan on Rockin the Garden? I can see how not a lot of folks would be pumped for the Sunday lineup, but to me it's hard to beat. Kurt Vile, GBV, and Spoon are all ridiculously awesome IMHO!! First time I've ever been excited about a fest I feel has been pretty ho-hum in the past.

We're going to the Sunday show. I've got a friend who's an MPR member; she's getting us tickets tomorrow.
I'll have to check out GBV and Spoon. I know a little bit of Spoon. Dusy...can you put together some stuff from those two bands for me?

Meanwhile, I can't wait to hear the new songs from KV.

i kinda think they're a band that you needed to hear at the time or that needs context to really appreciate them. i heard so much beatles growing up that i didn't really appreciate them until after i was able to put their music (especially the later material) into the context of the time period they were in. nobody did what the beatles did, but us younger generations who have heard beatles songs all of our lives can't really understand that until we have more knowledge of the music and spirit of their time.

now the replacements aren't the beatles by any means, but i think the replacements are similar- they influenced many bands we grew up on (and were influenced by many bands themselves), so when you hear a replacements song, it's like, 'what's the big deal?' but they had their own sound and ethos, and were largely doing it before most anyone else was. i think there's something to be said for that. it doesn't have to mean their music is good to our own ears, but i can understand now why they are revered as they are.

I'm 31 but cannot get in to a lot of modern music. I enjoy rock music without much pretense or phoniness.

I think there's pretense and phoniness in EVERY era of rock.

There is phoniness in every era of rock. Maybe some of it can be traced to the fact I wasn't alive when a lot of the music I like was first put out (therefore I am less critical) and it has the aura of being classic and more accepted by the masses. Just a thought.

Yup, 31. I grew a beard last year and still have it because of my baby face.

PJ, remember Minnesota? We haven't gone anywhere since 2006. It shouldn't be hard to find us...

Dude I'd be glad to give ya a crash course! GBV - when first getting into them, it's a bit daunting since they've made like a JILLION albums (6 albums and an EP in the last 3 years i believe). I hate recommending greatest hits albums, but 'Human Amusements at Hourly Rates' covers the essentials, from lo-fi early stuff to some of the more polished, poppy tunes. The album that started everything for me, and probably their most beloved, is Bee Thousand. It won't be an instant classic to your ears, give it time, but IMO it's an incredible album - almost like listening to a fuzzy lo-fi radio version of the beatles being broadcast from an alien planet. Short bursts of weirdness - most songs under 2 mins.

Spoon - I hear many fans say the old stuff is the best, and honestly I haven't given older albums enough time. But i'll tell ya that Gimme Fiction, Gagagagaga, and Transference are freegin great. One of my favorite pumpy jams to get me up and going at work in the morning is 'Trouble Comes Running'- to me a perfect song. Also see 'Sister Jack', 'Mystery Zone', 'I Turn my camera on', You got yr cherry bomb'.

I'd be glad to put together a playlist for both bands - you happen to have spotify?

Had a convo with a friend last night about making sure to try and keep up with newer music, and not becoming one of those old stubborn curmudgeons who only likes what they liked in their day and that's it. It's hard to keep up with a lot of new bands, but man, music is awesome - there's something out there for everyone if you dig around, and give albums more than a few listens.

That being said, I'm so stuck in the 90's man. Found myself spinning 'Rubberneck' by the Toadies last night and watching Breeders videos on YouTube. Ha.

and now i realize you weren't even talking to me there- somehow i missed vant and dusicks posts there. doh! andyslash can't read gud. if the girlfriend volunteers us and we're there, i'll let you guys know where we're at to come say hi if you want.

i'd say we got 2-4 inches of snow in northeast. it doesn't appear apple valley (where i work) got anything. the ground was still covered in 1-2 inches when i left for work, but it looks bone dry at the office. a tale of two cities, indeed.

happy thursday. play pearl jam, minnesota!

You are the BEST Diddy!!! So stoked. And hell yes, karaoke/taprooms/pumpy times soon!

Just throwin' this out there once again - anyone down for a meet up anytime soon? Maybe when the snow melts? I like the Mortimer's idea, or maybe Northeast brewery tour?
