  • I just don't see any point to saying things like "they're never going to play here" or "they hate to tour", etc. Yes, they don't tour as much as they did in 1992, but let's face it, they are older and have families. I don't think it's a reasonable request of us fans to ask them to miss their children growing up to sing us a few songs. I think they still like to tour - they are just more realistic about it. They want to keep doing it and don't want to get burned out or frustrated so they pace themselves a little more. Give 'em a break and stay positive - they'll play the

Also TWO PJ songs played the Wild game last night - and a win (see, things are looking up already ;) )

Cheers! Spin the Black Circle, Got Some or Fixer (can't remember..), and I feel like there was a third. I dunno, either way, the Xcel definitely has far better music than the Bridgestone in Nashville.. man their music the other night was laughable!

A concert on the Duluth lift bridge. :P Imagine how the sound would carry over lake superior. Ed can sing all his songs with wave and water metaphors.

    Bingo. Couldn't agree more.

A complaint that the band doesn't play your hometown (or that their sound has changed, for that matter) is tantamount to saying the band owes you something. They don't. No band ever will.

It sucks, but that's life. I wish they'd play here more too, but they don't and so I travel when I can. We save frequent flyer miles and vacation time and have a monthly travel budget, all so that we can go see our favorite band play.

I know not everyone has the time/money/resources to do that. We don't always (although I'm very confident that my student loan debt total matches or exceeds anyone's here  ), but that's life too.

The bottom line is: it sucks that they don't play here more, but so what? It's a band. Enjoy them from afar, enjoy them up close by traveling, or don't enjoy them at all. Pretty easy.

We were at the game last Saturday night and heard "Go." We decided that someone there is a big PJ fan. Rarely am I there for a game (NCAA or NHL) and don't hear a PJ song or two.

Fuck that will be awesome to see them there again. :D

that's a pretty big leap. complaint = debt? no, i don't think so.

they don't owe me anything at all. but it sure would be nice to sleep in my own bed after a show. is that selfish? absolutely. but i'm definitely not saying they owe me that opportunity.

Well of course it would be great to sleep at home after a show, but that's sort of irrelevant.

    Run it down this way.

Person 1: "PJ never plays shows in ______."
    Person 2: "And?"
Person 1: [fill in any reason: "I don't like that/it's not fair etc"]
Person 2: "Why is that a problem?"
Person 1: [fill in any reason: "it's not convenient for me/they should play areas equally etc"]
Person 2: "Why should they do anything different than what they want?"
Person 1: "Because I would like them to."
    Person 2: "Uh, ok."

Obviously that's a slightly tongue-in-cheek conversation, but my point is the same. So long as fanhood is voluntary, complaining is (a) pointless, and (b) when it happens, suggestive of some indefensible claim on the band (i.e. "they owe me something etc"). If it weren't, why would they stay?

So why am I comfortable making the leap I did?

Because if the complaint isn't lodged because of a belief that they owe us something, then it's because the person just plain old doesn't like what the band does these days.

And...if you don't like what the band does, why would you waste your time with them? (it's voluntary, remember?)

And so the fact that the complaints persist means the person is still here and obviously still a fan...see where I'm going with it? ;)

Sorry guys. I might come across as testy, but it's been a long week. PJ is fun. Complaining isn't. I'll never be convinced that complaints about what the band does - music or tours or who they are sponsored by etc - are legitimate. That's not to say I love everything they do - I don't. Play Minnesota already. See? But it means that as long as I'm not compelled to support them with my membership, I have ABSOLUTELY no claim on them. They can do what they want. I just have a really hard time understanding why so many 10c members would continue to throw money at the band - including renewing their memberships - when the band makes them so unhappy. I've read that some fans renew only so they have fan club ticket opportunities. Ah, so complaining about the band is really only relative to when people are getting their way around here. Hmmm...

So where does that leave a complaint? It's really just negativity, however true or accurate or insightful as it might be. The complaint about their tour schedule is either because of some belief that the band owes us something or just negativity. Neither one is real great.

You can enjoy them from afar, you can enjoy them up close, or you can enjoy them not at all. It's a band. It's really that easy.

This has been another end of the week Vant-Rant.

    Take care.

PS find me some tickets Ryan.

that's a pretty hard line approach.

i'm not an unhappy or disgruntled fan. i'm a dissappointed fan. i can be disappointed and still feel they are worth my support. and i can voice that. lo and behold i can do that on a fan forum because, hey, i AM still a fan and this board is for discussion about the band and the things they do. they don't owe me anything, but that doesn't mean i can't be disappointed by some of the things they do (or don't do) while still being quite happy and supportive of the whole that is pearl jam.

we all have friends who do some things we just don't like. it doesn't mean we don't like them or don't support them. and it's usually better to be honest with them than not, so you tell them when you don't like something. they can choose to use that information how they wish, but you've at least let them know they've let you down. and that's ok, because you are still there for them.

this thread is the avenue to do that as it relates to pearl jam in minnesota. we definitively know the band and its associates pay attention to things on this board, so i choose to voice my disappointment in the ongoing lack of a minnesota show. if that's "negativity", then so be it. i'm negative. and selfish. but successful and rewarding relationships are a two way street, and it'd sure be nice if pearl jam came and visited me instead of me going to visit them. i want them to know that. i hope they do. but i think even pearl jam knows it won't be the end of our relationship if they don't.

Fair enough. But like I said, I just can't imagine letting that get to me, and I can't understand that it comes from anywhere else than some sense of entitlement, however small. Being disappointed and persisting in tired complaints are different things.

Anyway. Not worth arguing over. I hope they play here soon enough.

Maybe PJ can play the Turf Club. Just tell Eddie it is called the Surf Club. :D

Favorites from the album so far:

    1. Mind Your Manners - possibly one of their best in several albums.
    2. Yellow Moon - reminiscent of "Hard Sun," a very rich and full sounding track.
    3. Lightning Bolt - the keyboards are a little much, but that refrain guitar part is fucking sweet.
    4. My Father's Son - love the groove on this one.
    5. Pendulum - they kept it simple, and the result was a haunting song that is probably a great opener (right Pittsburgh?)
    6. Getaway - cool, chunky song with great vocals and that end part is really cool.

All in all, I've listened through 3-4 times and I like it a lot so far. In the post-Backspacer world, a lot of fans have had some trepidation about what the next album would be like. More adult contemporary? Less? And after Wrigley, some even worried that Brendan O'Brien playing on "Future Days" was a sign of worse things to come.

But I think time will prove us wrong in our fears. Lightning Bolt has far more good songs than bad, and even a few great ones ("Mind Your Manners" and "Yellow Moon" come to mind). The obvious castaways in my mind are "Sleeping By Myself" and "Infallible" (I realize I'm in the great minority on this one - it's just too quirky for me), but again, the strengths of the album - some very simple songs with room for each guy to do his thing - more than make up for it.

In the grand scheme of their catalogue, I'm not sure where it will rank, and perhaps, after 20 years, it's unfair to grade any individual album against their entire body of work. On it's own, Lightning Bolt is an album with a lot to like, and aside from that, the band sounds like they're having fun again. Considering how much worry fans had (fairly or unfairly) after Backspacer, the album is an absolute gem, one that gives hope to the idea that the band can continue to write great music for years to come.

    As a stand-alone album, it's a solid B.

As an answer to how much hand-wringing we fans have done lately, it's an A.

So PJ is doing the songs for the World Series.

Let's see some 1991 magic and have PJ play Minnesota!!! They won game seven on my ninth birthday, so it's always been special to me.

"As McCready hit the familiar first notes of the standard closer "Yellow Ledbetter," Vedder promised it wouldn’t be another seven years before the band returned to Pittsburgh. Pearl Jam continues their 25-date tour tonight in Buffalo, New York."

If PJ ever plays Minnesota again I wonder if Ed will say something similar to the above quote.

I wish I could see what the inside artwork looks like on the CD. I'll probably download from itunes though. The CD sounds like it's been mastered for itunes (like virtually every album these days).

New week and another bump for PJ in Minnesota.

Here's hoping some dates occur after they get back from Australia. :)
