Hinn wrote:1. Hotels are for silly older people. Youth hostels are everywhere. Decent ones for about $35. Just about double that if you're going to a show in Venice or Scandinavia, halve that if it's in places not on the Euro (except Switzerland and Scandinavia). Hostelworld or Hostelbookers.
2. Book early, book cheap. Flights, especially. Skyscanner is your friend. Ryanair isn't, but it's cheap. They're fucked, you'll get pissed off at them while you fly, but they're cheap. And them other ones too - WizzAir, Tuifly, them other continent-based tightarse airlines. You can fly for 5 bucks if you book at exactly the right times.
3. A Eurail pass is a ripoff for the kind of rapid travel you'll be doing during a tour.
4. You really wanna save money? Forget the hostel. Sleep on the airport floor. Saves on the hostel cost, and the first plane out from whichever shitty out-of-town airport to the next place you're going to is always the cheapest one
5. Find someone to ride with instead of flying
6. Fuck the queue. Waste of time. Unless if it's Berlin, in which case they have great bars right at the queue, but even then, still fuck the queue. I'd rather dive into the fountain and/or pass out. Come drink with me instead.
7. I cannot emphasise this any more. FUCK. THE. QUEUE.
8. You can sleep when you pass out.
9. Alcohol-induced sleep drowns out the vaccuum cleaners at the airport which run through the night. They're annoying, but at least night staff being around means that no one is getting raped.
10. I say come drink with me. I didn't say that I'm good at protecting people. Some guy walked into my Alpine Valley room and demanded we leave his room, and my reaction was to wake up, go pee, then go back to sleep.
11. Ask people for board. I hosted like 12 Poles at my digs in London for showers and shit.
12. Trans-Atlantic flights aren't going to be cheap. Ryanair is sposed to start up but don't hold your breath. Transat or Iceland Express are somewhat cheaper than the big carriers.
13. Oh yeah. Fuck the queue.
14. Drinking in Scandinavia is expensive.
15. Drinking in Poland is not
16. I love that everyone just drinks in the street and on the tube in Germany and a bunch of other places
17. Did I mention I'm kinda a tour alcoholic?
18. Fuck the queue!
Hinn, I feckin love you sometimes....

The past years, money has really restricted me, but back then I did not let it bother me. Transportation and tickets are the most important, and then you'll need places to sleep. You can make that as cheap or as expensive as you wish. I know people who toured the whole 2000 European tour who sometimes slept in parks and washed in fountains. But I also know people who spent the same amount of money for two shows that I did 13 for in 2006.
I liked touring by train, but once I got my own car that turned out the best. It's exhausting, but it is exhausting anyway. I have slept in a mixture of friend's houses, hostels, hotel floors of friends when everything was full, and hotels. Loved it all! Just be in time, be prepared (money, days off, information, things like that), and just do it.
Oh, and to get to know people all over Europe, of course I can recommend the Bugs mailinglist. It was started in 1995 before the tour of 1996. You can find all information about Bugs on our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pjbugs

If you get a chance, jump all over it...:D
I've done it..And as far as expense goes..frequent and often outweighs following the band for extended periods of time in my opinion. Especially if you have a 9-5 job and spare time is as rare as money. I was in and out of Verona, Italy in a few days and only had to spend a couple vac days..And again, everyday away from home equals a couple three hundred out of me pocket..I saw the city (Verona), great place (I hear Shakespeare wrote something or two about the city as well), caught an amazing rock show in an ancient roman amphitheatre, and was back home about 72 hours later.. gravy.
The Hostel route..
You never know what you're going to get going the hostel route. Dropping into Brisbane for '03 tour I headed south to Byron Bay with no plans or reservations. A six pack later I show up in dtbb where this awesome chick named Michelle from Chicago was waiting with a microbus..I asked if there were any rooms, she said the city was booked but they had one bed available at her hostel. I threw my surfboard in the bus and went to take a look. I thought I was over hostels at that point, but when I arrived and saw a couple of tattooed and pierced Austrian girls walking around in their underwear telling me I was lucky to get the last bed in Byron, I could not argue...muahaha... worked out very well to my liking
Europe can be done cheap if you're aware..BTW, when is this next Euro your? I think I just talked myself into a bit of a frenzy... Cool Thread.....10/31/09, 05/21/10, Peru, Los Angeles0 -
We have traveled to Europe to see PJ and so glad we did! PJ are what made us go to Europe for the first time. Our passports were about to expire and we hadn't yet made a trip, so decided where ever PJ played we would go! We didn't do it cheaply as we didn't need to but met many who did. All had a great time. Our first trip was in 2006 and we did 4 concerts and it ended up being pretty hectic, so in 2007 we only did 1 and were able to see more of the countries. I'd say somewhere in between would be ideal, depending on what your goal is. There are lots of good recommendations on here so just go and enjoy!"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." Tour the cheaper countries in Europe and you'll save a packet. Pearl Jam at Berlin cost nearly 3 times as much as the same concert the next night at the Opener festival here in Poland. Accommodation, etc also makes a big difference to a budget. My advice if you are travelling on a budget is to skip the UK and fly straight to Germany and tour in continental Europe.
With the band playing some unusual/rarely visited countries in South America, there is always a chance that they will hit less often visited places in Europe like Croatia, Poland, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Bulgaria and so on and that would be about 5 shows for the price of two in the UK!we're all going to the same place...0 -
I went to Dublin last year to see PJ and it was a great experience. So many positives - checking out a new city I've never seen before, driving on the left side of the road, and getting early fan club entry into the show and being only a few rows from the stage (Mike side). I wasn't even planning on going to Europe to see them, but when the shows were announced, I saw which show made the most sense time wise and got tickets for that one, and everything else followed.
I would suggest pricing out airfare now for different places in Europe, so you are ready. Find out which is the cheapest and which places you'd actually want to go check out. Do all of your planning now so that when shows are announced, you can quickly get everything together. I would say if you have the money at all, do it - chalk it up to one of those life experiences that you will never forget.

I plan on following the whole / most of the next European tour too.
OP, flight from/to NYC aside, you definitely won't be on your own to figure it all out. Here's hoping it'll indeed be 2012 !Yay!
The more I hear u say it...the more I wanna do it too....but dunno if I can pull it off....gonna have to be extra kind to the hubs:?
Any idea what it all might cost?? If it's a bunch of us we shd totally hire a tour bus and drive around Europe
Hey you have to be there !!! Start being extra kind to your hubs right now !!!
No seriously, I can't imagine touring without you :( .
We'll go the cheapest way, we'll find a way, you just have to pull this off !!
Now about that bus and that documentary .... I have a feeling it'll be well documented, considering we had like 300 + pix for 3 days only ....
Someone quick, get me a JOB or three!!!This has to be done now....umm, maybe not the whole tour but most of it. I can pull that off, right? Cheap and cheerful sounds great in that case. It'll be a laugh. Bring your own sheets
I'll backpack it this time. Don't think I can go on almost a whole tour with the same pair of jeans like I had to for PJ20, thanks to American Airlines losing my bag :Pif I keep holding out,.... will the light shine through?0 -
