You folks need some earthquake preparedness training.
You don't want to run outside - it's the falling bricks and electrical wires that will get you.
The best thing about an earthquake? It's over by the time you realize what it was. No hiding in the cellar worried for hours like in tornados or hurricanes.
i didn't think it was a big deal at all. i was on the phone with someone. it felt like someone was just fucking with me and shaking my cubicle. i put the guy on hold to figure out what was going on. deciphered it was some freak kind of weak earthquake...then went back on the phone and continued selling loans like a champ.
I was at work (on the third floor of a building with 4 floors and a penthouse) which is roughly 108-120 miles from the epicenter according to the driving directions.
I was at my desk and a squirrel or mouse was running in my ceiling while there was a gentle rumble in my coworker's workstation. They say animals sense these things. Seconds later, came the vibrations which lasted a little while. It wasn't just a little shaking, it opened a small file cabinet's drawer. It was much worse that the one we had a 5 a.m. last yr. You can make fun of me, but I panicked and my coworker used to live in CA most of his life and he said it was an EQ when I asked what it is....I thought we had an explosion (chemicals) in a lab downstairs. We were evacuated from the building and I'm glad it was such a beautiful day out. I know that when I went outside, I must have looked like I just saw a ghost. I got in my car and turned it on the all news station and was surprised when the announcer said it was a 5.8 (then 6.0) EQ felt even in Ocean City, MD.
I understand my relative in Ontario felt it.

Some of us in N.Y. have been traumitized since 9/11, every day since in Manhattan since has been that much more Stressful, sorry if that doesn't meet some criteria of yours.
Sorry if you took that wrong - was trying to be helpful actually - but I can understand the motive to get out of the building with that horrible memory. We had a couple of people killed in central CA a couple of years ago because they went outside and a brick wall colapsed on them. I was in the subway in NYC, couldn't tell anything happened. Walked outside at Canal St & Broadway, thousands of people in the streets, just like every other day in NYC . Had a appointment to see my lawyer. He shows up late because of the building shaking & the evacuation  . This leads to me leaving his office late, now I need to take a $60 cab ride to JFK because I'm behind schedule.
I'm leaving an earthquake to go home to a possible hurricane in Florida, although it looks like it's not going in that direction now.
With all these natural disasters I'm hoping nothing happens when I get to Wisconsin. Is it too soon for an ice age .
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)

pretty cool that you see the one's head pop up about 3 seconds prior to it happening....
 animals have way better hearing than us humans. Wonder how my cats reacted when the earthquak happened. I remember in the winter time my cats were staring at the laundry room door for some reason and when I opened it up there was a bat in there. Somehow they heard the bat, and I didn't.

It's weird how that works. I remember the biggest earthquake I ever felt here, I was at work, and it made me reel across my office when it hit - SUPER alarming. I got under the desk and rode it out, and as soon as it ended I looked up out my office door, and this dude came strolling along the hallway and had absolutely no clue what had happened. We were in the same building, same section of the building, and I felt it so much it almost knocked me off my feet, and he didn't notice a thing. Totally strange.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata

Hawks, usually it is easier to feel when you get up huger as the building tends to sway. Lived in SoCal for twenty years and lots of quakes. I didn't feel this at all.

6.0, twelve miles from Lone Pine. Felt it shake here at home. Made my desk chair shake back and forth. I've been fighting vertigo lately anyway so this has got my head spinning a bit!
"Don't give in to the lies. Don't give in to the fear. Hold on to the truth. And to hope."
Ooo the thought of being in one of these terrifies me. I'm glad you're okay @brianlux and hope the vertigo goes away!
Thank you!
As far as earthquakes themselves go, I have to admit I'm somewhere between slightly jaded of them and very fascinated.
On the jaded end of things, I've been through more of them than I can remember, and never so much as lost a dish to breakage- lucky! And as much as they are kind of fun for a second or two, earthquakes always leave my head spinning. So far, for me, experiencing them has just been mostly an interesting but rather uncomfortable experience.
On the other hand, what is behind these quakes is really amazing. According a book my wife is reading, the Pacific Plate (which runs elbows with the North American Plate right along our coast line her in the west) moves north about 2" a year. Elsewhere, I've read it moves on average as much as 3 to 4 inches a year. Which means the ground under which I'm sitting right now as I type this was over eleven feet south of here when I was born. That's pretty cool!
Whenever this top comes up, I'm always reminded of this great song:

You can make fun of me, but I panicked and my coworker used to live in CA most of his life and he said it was an EQ when I asked what it is....I thought we had an explosion (chemicals) in a lab downstairs. We were evacuated from the building and I'm glad it was such a beautiful day out. I know that when I went outside, I must have looked like I just saw a ghost. Sorry if you took that wrong - was trying to be helpful actually - but I can understand the motive to get out of the building with that horrible memory. We had a couple of people killed in central CA a couple of years ago because they went outside and a brick wall colapsed on them. So if you do get out, get far away from any masonry buildings - and cables.
