What band have you given countless chances and still no go?

    Foo Fighters and RHCP.

Both bands write one meaningless, forgettable song after another. I don't understand all the appeal they have with Pearl Jam fans. And they've both been around long enough that one or two tracks from an album 20 years ago (Blood Sugar for example) doesn't count. I couldn't give a shit about how Keidis feels about California (an obligatory song or 5 on every record) but at least he has a point of view. But Dave Grohl? Really? We all bought his first record in high school because he was the drummer from whatever that band was and it was fun I guess but it amazes me that people are still into them. Basically, both bands feel childish to me.

    Anyway, that's my rant.

Haha, not really. I just don't see how a guy could stand there at a concert and be into it. Their first record was fine but after that it was like someone taught Nsync how to play guitars.

There have been a few bands that I was really, really into, and now (after listening too much I guess), I just can't listen to them anymore.

    Grateful Dead
    Phish
    Allman Brothers

I don't know what happened, i just don't like them anymore.

I still like Jerry Garcia's solo stuff though.

I can't listen to Springsteen anymore. I was way into him in the mid-2000s but I just don't like it anymore.

I was the same til very recently. Their last album which is their worst by most their fans' standards is what did it for me. Then I checked out the Ashes of American Flags dvd and it blew my mind. Now the more I listen, the more I dig.

Yeah the Ashes of American Flags dvd is awesome! That little tag of "Buttery Wings" at the end of "Mind Warp" and then leading into a kick ass version of "Toffee Cake" is the greatest musical moment of a dvd I have ever seen.

I couldn't get them but I gave "Kicking Television" a try and that opening version of 'misunderstood' with all the repetition of nothing just hooked me...

my wife, on the other hand, hates that so much that she leaves the room whenever I play it.

  • Captain Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica'. I've been told that it takes about 30 listens before you love it but I am stuck on 29.

That's exactly what I was going to say. I always hear about what a "masterpiece" it is, and hear people sing its praises (including the 58 spot on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list) but it sounds like shit to me, and I've heard it more than 30 times probably.

I think a lot of people claim to like it, even if they don't. Because it's one of those albums that just having a negative opinion of it doesn't mean you have your own opinion, it means you "don't get it". But if getting it means listening to people bang away on drums with no sense of rhythm, guitars with no hint of musical talent, and some dude rambling on about God knows what...

Keep telling yourself that. All of the songs on "Trout Mask Replica" are meticulously arranged and performed. It's loaded to the brim with awesome rhythms and cool guitar parts. It sounds like chaos to you because you - wait for it - REALLY DON'T GET IT! Have you ever seen a 3-D seeing eye puzzle? Some people can stare at them for hours and not see anything. That's what your problem is.

I dunno. I couldn't see those 3d seeing eye puzzles for ages then I finally got one and I thought "Really? Is that what all the fuss is about?" Some things aren't worth getting after you've put a lot of effort in... and I'll happily add the Shaggs and Wesley Willis to that pile.

I'm still on the fence with TMR, I love it as individual tracks but struggle to listen to the whole thing. As I said, maybe I don't listen to it in the right time and place.

You know, sometimes people - WAIT FOR IT - just don't like things!! :)

I've tried all my life to like tomatoes and bell peppers and after 36 years, I've just plain flat out given up. I just don't like the taste of them, and never will. My husband loves them and thinks they have a great refreshing taste. I want to gag when I eat them.

Music is exactly the same. Just because you like something doesn't mean everyone else has to. I've been following this thread and the discussion of this Trout Mask Replica album has gone off the deep end. Let me be the first in this thread to stand up and say I had never heard of this album or the band that made it. I had to Google it to see what the big deal was. I have zero problem with anyone who doesn't like what I like. I'm a huge Electronica fan but I doubt most people on this forum share my tastes and I have no problem with that.
  • I'm going to echo those who say Foo Fighters. They have some good songs, but overall seem very bland to me.
The other band is Opeth. I respect their ability but after a couple of songs I'm ready to put something else on.

I would never admit this to my husband but I HATE AC/DC and Metallica :o they are both his favourites. Shihad are probably the biggest rock band in NZ and everybody seems to love them but to me all their songs sound the same.

Metallica - I just can't ever take them seriously. Sometimes I'll catch myself headbanging along to some of their riffs, but then James' voice comes in and kills it for me. His lyrics aren't terrible, but his vocal phrasing-ah, grates on me-ah, endlessly-AH!

I also have a strange relationship with Mastodon - I really enjoy some of their stuff, especially their new album, but I can't listen to them often. A lot of their songs blend together (I think it might be their production that does it) and it wears on me after an hour (then again, I've only heard Leviathan, Crack the Skye, and The Hunter). They're a nice, solid kick of metal, but sometimes that's all they are. They feel like one of those bands where one day I'll pop on one of their songs, and just completely get them on the spot.

Beck's the same way. I love Modern Guilt and Odelay, and most of Midnite Vultures, but the rest of his music doesn't really speak to me, yet. But I do find myself going back to him from time to time, and what I like, I really like. I'm just waiting for that moment when he 'clicks' with me.

Can't stand RHCP at all. I tried, believe me I did, and I love Flea's bass playing, but Keidis, ruins them. His lyrics are asinine and childish, and now that he's nearing 50, it's painful to listen to him spit out lines like "tick tock I want to rock you like the '80s, cock blocking isn't allowed". Even if it weren't for that, I just find his voice bland, the way he sings does absolutely nothing for me. It's so disappointing to hear such good musicians (Flea and Frusciante, when he was still in the band) tied down by Kiedis, and I wish I could find a way to like them past him.

And finally, Dream Theater. I know a few people that tout this band as being the pinnacle of metal music, so naturally, I want to check them out. The first time I heard them, I was impressed by the playing, but the music itself wasn't very memorable. Fast forward a year or two, and I listen to a few albums all the way through, and find myself completely bored to tears. The guys can play the hell out of their instruments, but they don't have enough actual songwriting to hold it all together. The vast majority of the stuff I've heard from them launches into aimless soloing that kills the flow of the songs and tacks anywhere from two to six minutes onto songs with no other purpose but to display their chops. LaBrie, the singer, is probably the worst part of the band...his melodies are stale and stuck in the realm of '80s metal, and make the band sound painfully dated. I really, really wanted to like them, but I just do not get what people love about them at all.

To the people saying QOTSA, I was the same way. My brother burnt me a copy of Songs for the Deaf back around 2006, and the first time I heard it, I absolutely hated it. But yet, every once in a while, I'd give it another listen, and even when I still didn't like it, something about it just kept drawing me back, and after a few years, they just finally hit me and I bought everything they put out. Radiohead kind of hit me that way too, but only with certain albums. I loved OK Computer and In Rainbows from the get-go, and got Kid A next. I wound up thinking it was boring, and didn't really want to listen to anything else from them. So I went back to their earlier, more immediate stuff, got The Bends, enjoyed it, and then when Kid A was put in the context of those two records, I understood it, and them. I think the best approach to getting into them would be to start at the beginning, and go from there. Their later stuff makes a lot more sense after hearing how they evolve album to album into what they are now.

Damn, I really didn't intend to write this long a post...and I feel bad spewing so much criticism when I'm such a shit musician myself, but it feels good to vent, and I highly doubt any of those guys will ever read this anyway. Just one guy's opinions, if you like 'em, good on ya, maybe you can change my mind too.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

Their ability to take you on a purely musical journey is second only to the grateful dead in their prime.

if you were lucky enough to see the dead in their prime, you might find phish to be a big joke, as I do.
Meatstick, really? Its one thing to just groove to the music, but some their lyrics are so dumb its almost impossible not to laugh.

+1 on the arcade fire, and add TV on the radio and LCD soundsystem.

And to all those radiohead naysayers, you have to see them live to appreciate how good they are IMHO. I never really liked them until I saw a show. WOW.

Same here. I mean, I understand his importance, influence and place in rock history but I can't really enjoy it.

    Some others.

Foo Fighters (everything after The Colour And The Shape)
    Anything with Henry Rollins
The Flying Burrito Brothers (or just Gram Parsons, or his stint with The Byrds)
Robert Johnson (same deal as Elvis)

    and many more
