I gave Rush and Radiohead a chance a while ago since my husband likes them a lot but they just didn't do it for me. I also tried so much to like Queens of the Stone Age but I only really care for a few songs.
I want to like all of PJ's side projects, and for a while I did, but I just don't like Stone's Bayleaf album, Tres. Mtns, or any of Eddie's solo stuff.

The Grateful Dead. I feel like I should like 'em, but I don't. I love their story, and what they stood for, and their political/cultural views...I've read a lot about them...it's just the music leaves me cold.
My Pearl Jam shows: 1 in 1995, 2 in 1998, 20 in 2003, 13 in 2006, 3 in 2007, 8 in 2008, 5 in 2009, 4 in 2010, 5 in 2012. EV: 8 in 2011, 1 in 2012. Brad: 1 in 1998, 1 in 2002.
Many that have been mentioned--arcade fire, foo fighters, mmj, kol, radiohead etc...but the person that said The National should be beat with a big giant dildo, no doubt..
I feel the same about anyone that has mentioned just about any band other than maybe MMJ. Really? I know I'm wrong, but seriously, this thread has me imagining all of you as a bunch of 30-50 year old washed up PJ fans that are stuck listening to older alternative and washed up radio rock.
AF is the only band that (to me) out-does PJ on an energetic front live. If you don't get them, I feel bad for you. PJ is my favorite band, but if both were playing the same night, I can honestly say I'd be torn and would probably call in a bomb threat to one of the venues to get them to reschedule.
RH changed music
The National is brilliant, mature music
The Foos are good honest rock without the over produced garbage and crappy lyrics
KoL have two (and a half) great albums
If you don't subscribe to any of the above, who DO you tend to like that is new/relevant? I wouldn't mind finding a few new listens, and if I prefer the above, maybe I'm just the doofus and whatever you'll pull out will blow me away.

Bring on the foot long, Tyson! I've tried, I just can't get into his voice. Perhaps if I see them live I would change my mind. I'll admit I'm kind of a snob when it comes to new music. I don't know if music in the early 90s was really fantastic or if it was because of my age at the time and that I was easily influenced. Most of the bands I like nowadays started around then. As far as newer music, I really like Mumford and Sons. I've also recently discovered Glen Hansard and Joseph Arthur. I dig Jack Johnson every once in awhile, depending on the mood.

Captain Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica'. I've been told that it takes about 30 listens before you love it but I am stuck on 29.
That's exactly what I was going to say. I always hear about what a "masterpiece" it is, and hear people sing its praises (including the 58 spot on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list) but it sounds like shit to me, and I've heard it more than 30 times probably.
Of course when I say I don't like it some pretentious asshole will always say "Well, you just don't get it". What's to get? It sounds like a bunch of hippies who didn't even know how to play an instrument hijacked a recording studio and recorded a terrible album. To which they'll say "It's supposed to be like that, it's bad on purpose". So the difference between a shitty album and a masterpiece is whether or not it's shitty on purpose?
I think a lot of people claim to like it, even if they don't. Because it's one of those albums that just having a negative opinion of it doesn't mean you have your own opinion, it means you "don't get it". And nobody wants to be the person that doesn't get it. But if getting it means listening to people bang away on drums with no sense of rhythm, guitars with no hint of musical talent, and some dude rambling on about God knows what (and doing so out of time because he wasn't even listening to the music when he dubbed the vocals) then I don't think I want to get it. I support it in theory, because he was truly doing his own thing, but not in actual practice.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
Had a friend who was obsessed with Bands like Cake and BNL, They might be Giants ect. Not a huge fan of these kind of bands, but they do have some fun songs, and are very talented musicians. Bands like these don't take themselves to seriously, they just have fun. They also happen to be very talented musicians, but like I said, not something I could listen to every day.

I think my problem is that I've never really listened to it in the right setting. It is not an album I should have on in my modern living room covered in kids' toys, on iTunes or while I'm working. I think it is an album that needs to be listened to outdoors on a sunny day. When I take the time to stop what I'm doing and listen to it, I can enjoy it and even love parts of it. If I owed something like the modern equilvalent of a walkman (whatever you all call one of those now), I would take that album out to the fields and listen to it there.
But then, artists don't exist in a vacuum and creative development isn't purely maintained by internal forces. Listening to a bit of early Albert Ayler might give a bit of context.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
I might get slayed for this but as hard as I've tried I can't get into Radiohead.
They just don't do it for me.
They're another one for me too

Phish - You have to listen to them for what they are. Don't get caught up in lyrical content and meanings. That's not what Phish is about. But the right jam (in the right mood) = Phish does better than anyone ever has in the history of rock. Their ability to take you on a purely musical journey is second to none.
Also, I wouldn't want Phish's lyrics to be too deep. It's escapism and if you were bogged down in anti-war lyrics or naval gazing, it just wouldn't be the same.
Cake - meh
Floyd - eh, I guess to each their own...but Floyd is straight up rock studio perfection.
