Extreme Cold Snap causes havoc at Melbourne Airport

• John Lleyton
• From: Herald Sun

Extreme blizzard like conditions have caused major disruptions at Melbourne Airport this evening. Many flights have been delayed and diverted as air safety officials are concerned that slippery runways due to ice and the cold air pose a risk.

Air safety spokesman Jason Gasnier addressed a media contingent at the airport a short time ago. “We feel that in the best interest of passenger safety no flights are to depart or arrive until conditions improve, we have activated our contingency plan of having all flight land at nearby Ballarat airport until further notice” Mr. Gasnier told.

Extreme blizzard like conditions, the last which Melbourne and the entire Eastern states last experienced in July 2008, have caused major disruptions and dangerous driving conditions since early this morning.
Weather experts predict these conditions to stick around until Sunday where we should start seeing improvements. They urge extreme caution whilst driving and to look out for the elderly and pets in these harsh conditions.

I'm just glad I am not flying or driving out there.
    Very hazardous.
    Not worth the risk.

First it's the volcanic ash, and now blizzard conditions! i'm glad i went to melbourne when i did, had nothing but blue skys for days.

We're doing fine in the west, nothing to report here except for a storm risk which will probably turn out to be a fizzer

You guys in the West always get nice weather unlike us on the East with the blizzards and ice everywhere.

    8c here.
Damn you Sydneysiders got it worse, is the Harbour Bridge full of icicles like it was in the great blizzard of 2008?
Wouldn't want one of them falling down and spearing my car as I am driving on the bridge!

    That weatherzone site looks unreliable.
Never heard of this site you guys use.
It is like the weather icon on my Windows 7 desktop, it is always delayed by many hours, never accurate.
Use the site I linked, always accurate and current.

I think we are now in the middle of this system as the temperatures have dropped significantly in the last 15 mins to below 0. I got the heater cranked up high.
