We had to call the wildlife ranger this afternoon as a polar bear wandered into our backyard.
Now that can be a nuisance. I hope the ranger had thermal gear on.
PS. They might be after the penguins.

We keep a few as pets, might need to move them.

I changed this thread title to be in line with recent discussion.

I am currently watching a Bear Grylls Man vs Wild episode on surviving a blizzard.
    Hope it helps.
I am stomping my feet and running on the spot to keep warm.

Tell me about it. I just moved to Melbourne from the States. Minneapolis to be exact. You know, where it gets like -20 to -25 C in the winter. And all I hear from my girl is how 'cold' or 'freezing' it is.

Don't get me wrong, its not warm right now, but it sure as hell not freezing!

    Oi!!!!!

It got to BELOW freezing several times so far this winter, it's just that you were still in bed where it was warm and toasty and I was up and scraping ice of the windscreen!!!!! So technically, we're allowed to say it's freezing! And, it's all relative - it feels really cold to us (me especially) because we aren't used to cold weather!!!

    So there!

Oh, and did you hear the dudes on the weather channel right now?! They said it's been an exceptionally cold winter so far!

Yeah, yeah... as I have already said to you, we can't ALL come from places that are as cold as frigging Antarctica! AND... also you HAVE conceded at times here, that it's really cold with the wind chill, so shush!

Dont do it. Dogs will ruin your house. No dogs allowed in my rental.
Ok I train dogs as a side job ( I also train horses, and work on cat behavior modification) and let me just defend the animals for a second here. I too have had the whole "tenant" situation occur in my home at one point in time and it PISSES me the FUCK off when people blame the animals for the people's ignorance (which my snow boarding friend is the cause of the damage in your home NOT THE DOG)!!! It's like the folks that say.. Oh Pitt Bulls are terrible dogs cause of all the attention that's bad that they see in media or personal experience.. but let me tell you I have owned, lived with, worked with and known Pitts for 38 fucking years, and NEVER, I repeat NEVER, seen one attack another human being!!! Why?!!?!? Because the people that owned these dogs, my self included, were responsible for the actions and the training of their animals. An animal will simply react to the situation that you put it in... You leave a dog alone without first correcting anxiety reactions, you're gonna have a chewed up house.. You leave a dog without socialization training, you'll more than likely have a fear aggressive dog... IT WILL ALWAYS be the human's fault, because a dog can't choose it's circumstance.. the human chooses that for them..If you are not responsible enough to work with your dogs and cover all bases before presenting that dog to other people or dogs.. then save yourself the headache and don't get the dog.. THEY ARE THE SAME AS CHILDREN IN THE FACT THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE [/b]FOR EVERYTHING IT DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU WERE GOING TO REPRODUCE WOULD YOU NOT SEND YOUR KID TO SCHOOL!?!? Why would you decimate your kid's chances at a happy life by doing that!?!? Same thing with a dog, cat, horse, pig, any animal that requires your guidance to survive.. ok I'm done ranting..now for the answer to this post ...
  • whispering handswhispering hands Posts: 13,527
Wow lots of harshness towards the canine.

Not every dog barks incessantly, digs holes or otherwise damages property. I have three, all big. My neighbor's tenant lived next door to us, in a house 10 feet from ours, and didn't know for six months that we had any dogs.

State the ground rules: you'd like to see the dog first, check the house periodically, and expect that every poop will be picked up the second it hits the ground.

Do NOT have them keep the dog outside, it will bark out of sheer boredom.

Give them a chance. And please don't discriminate if it happens to be a big dog.
Very true.. and some dogs BTW are strictly outdoors dogs which means they have NO housetraining.. if this happens to be the case set aside a spot for the dog to escape terribly inclimate weather in a shelter of some sort ( garage, shed, a crate filled with straw and covered by a heavy tarpaulin). Either way it's only for a short while and Unlost here said the exact same thing I was going to say.. insist on meeting the dog first.. as well, if possible, insist on meeting the ACTUAL owner, as this person will be able to update you more correctly on the dog's Immunizations ( VERY important if you ever plan to own a dog yourself, because some diseases "hibernate" or go dormant in the ground and can be "awakened" by the prospect of a new host; your new dog!! Distemper and Parvo are very very formidable and deadly in this respect). But ultimately it is up to you and your family as a whole, it is YOUR house, and you obviously have a tendancy to not want to deal with irresponsible human beings, or it would not have been a stipulation that there be no pets in the first place..So.. weigh the options, but again if you end up doing this, meet the dog and if at all possible, before the owner leaves, meet them too, then make your decision.. Good luck!!
