RAGE IN THE CAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take me piece by piece..... Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
I feel sorry for all the fans that had to see my huge butt everytime I had to stand up and let people into the row get through. I counted 20 times during eds set list. People were getting mad behind me, and I didnt blame them. (They were mad at the same people who had to exit in and out during the show in the middle of a song) If you need to drink that much, why not stay at the bar and watch from there. The view wouldnt be that bad.
Ed had a great show, but I am begining to understand why Ed and other performers shy away from people. I dunno if I could take it.
I guess it really depends who you end up sitting around with..ive seen ed in chicago for all three of his solo shows and thought this was his best crowd!! i was in the Middle balcony and the only issue was the asshole who made the comment to glen during his set after that it was great all around me!!
Other than that assface who yelled at Glen Hansard, i thought the crowd was fine, too.
but I think Cell phones should not be allowed.
Also.....when music is playing, you still have to whisper to the person next to you. People think the music drowns out their voice, and it doesnt.
I was expecting the crowd to be far worse. From my perspective there wasn't much yelling or idiotic song requests, very different from his last time solo through Chicago and from what I've read on other cities this tour. I absolutely love how Glen stood up to the guy shouting at him during his set - he seemed to shut him down immediately.
If I had to get picky, it did get slightly annoying with all the cellphones and people constantly coming and going, but you really can't control everything and it was probably more noticeable being in that type of venue.
I agree with the original poster, and applaud his guts to say something (knowing that the meathead contigent would come out of the ether to ridicule him for simply calling for a measure of courtesy and civility at what is supposed to be an intimate theater show). These are not Pearl Jam shows. They are intended to be rare, intimate experiences with the artist -- not a pedal-to-the-metal rock concert. Yes, everyone paid $80 for tickets, but that doesn't give someone the right to disrespect their neighbors or the artists, which is what happened here. A couple years back, I saw Monsters of Folk. Security was very aggressive about making sure people kept their cell phones down, saying it was the wish of the band, which wanted to keep that intimate theater feel. At one point, Jim James reminded folks. It was the best concert experience I've had in a long time.
When you have Eddie pleading for the audience to behave, there's no excuse.
What did that guy shout at Glen anyway?

I really didn't think the crowd was that rowdy at all. Very laid back feeling all night which was welcomed. As for the cheering in between songs . Really? It is a concert.
Glen relayed the story of how ed called him after the fan died at his show, and he talked about how nice and generous Ed is, then he started to explain his next song, which was about a friend who was in trouble, and the guy said something like "Shut up and fucking play". I didnt hear the comment, and I am not certain about the swear, but thats what it sounded like to me. Someone can confirm this.
Then the crowd kinda booed the guy who yelled, and Glen said, "no its ok, i got this......You shut the fuck up. " he explained the rest of the song, then played. After the song, he said something like, "The amount of ignorance it must take to be that rude" or something to that effect. he had to shrug it off a few times, and seemed visibly upset by it at a couple of points, but he played it off well.
Again, not totally certain on the actual comments. It was the timing of the comment which was the most rude. Talk of dying, friends in trouble, etc.....

Its not cheering thats annoying. Its the chicks waiting for the fist quiet moment after the cheering to yell, "I Love you Eddie!!!" over and over and over.
Or the dudes yelling "Lukin" after every song. Every song.
I have no problem with rowdyness. Its just lame that people need to feel like they paid 80 bucks, so THEY should have a microphone too.
there's a time to stand.....a time to sit
a time to yell, scream, whistle and yes, even whoo hooo if you want
there's a time to be quiet and a time to listen....
there's no time for disrespect
people around you wouldn't be such an issue if you were paying attention to the show
if you were truly in your element you wouldn't notice much
if you can't figure that out then you shouldn't be there
hartford was by far the most respectful crowd
everyone one knew what to do and when
I loved the show and for the most part thought the crowd was great. But I felt weird sitting down. Why was everyone sitting down the whole time? It made it seem like no one was really into it....
I think sometimes Ed prefers that the crowd sits. Obviously, there will be times when people want to get up and rock out, but for the most part, I kinda enjoyed the intimate setting.

I agree with this whole thing....except the "people around you wouldn't be such an issue if you were paying attention to the show if you were truly in your element you wouldn't notice much".
It was mostly fine for me. But if there is someone right next to me talking the whole time, or yelling constantly, its hard to get in that element in the first place.
im thinking a europe solo show of eddie ..lets say at Italy....i wanna see who will gonna tell those freaks to sit down..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
If Ed has had to stop people from yelling for 5 nights in a row, maybe he's being too sensitive about it, especially if the worst offenders are the ones desribed by the op. The guys spent 20 years trying to get people to rock as hard as possible. 100% of the people at these shows are the same people that go to PJ shows. Let's not act like there's a whole different group of fans at these shows.
I don't condone trashing the opening band or the song requests or the random yelling while music is being played, I just don't see whats wrong with a little excitement during the show, outside of when Ed says it's ok.
To those who say, "But it is a concert....". Well, you can go to a symphony and it is called a concert. Do you have people shouting out there? These Eddie shows are about the music AND the stories. Cheering is defitely a good thing, but if Eddie is trying to tell a story the crowd should shut up. This is the kind of event or "Concert" this is. Now, the woo woo's or whistling may be annoying, but at least it isn't somebody yelling out songs or being overly rude.
I had some freaking idiot in the row behind me (row MM lower level) who was giving half of us in our row Tinnitus from his damn sonic boom whistling. I also had 2 women to the right of me doing Wendy Williams "Woo Woos" in between songs. Ed did a great performance last night, but that was seriously the worst venue experience I have had... I sorely prefer general admission when it comes to this kind of thing.
I had the pleasure of sitting next to the Woo Woo girls last night. If it had only been in between songs, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. The problem was them Wooing throughout songs, then EVERY song they played was her favorite and she tried to tell me all about it DURING the song. I tried my best to ignore her and it didn't ruin the night for me. But it's extremely hard to zone someone like that out when they're sitting right next to you. She's also a 10C member....said she hated people that screamed out song titles and proceeded to scream out Porch over and over again.
An EV solo show is different from a PJ show. At PJ, the louder the better!
WI '98, WI '99 (EV), WI '00, Chgo '00, MO '00, Champaign '03, Chgo '03, WI '03, IN '03, MI '04, Chgo '06:N1 & 2, WI '06, Chgo '07, Chgo '08 (EV:N1), Chgo '09:N1 & 2, Chgo '11 (EV:N1), WI '11:N1 & 2, Philly '12, Wrigley '13, Pitt '13, Buff '13, Detroit '14, MKE '14, Wrigley '16: N1 & N2, Seattle '18 N2, Wrigley '18: N1 & N2, Fenway '18 N1, STL '22, St Paul '23 N2, Chgo '23: N1 & N2, Wrigley '24 N1 & 2
So people were cheering between songs? Man, what a bunch of inconsiderate fuckholes.
I like how you generalize...I didn't have a problem with the cheering, more the sonic boom whistling from one guy behind me and two drunk woo woo girls...but yeah I guess I am the asshole. I forgot this is a free country where we can be inconsiderate pricks to everyone around us because it's our right. We should scream requests at Eddie every time he tries to talk and scream out LUKIN in between each song...I am sure he would love that.
Think about though...
Its a concert...People are whistling? People are drunk? Girls are Wooo Woooing????
Is it really any different than any other concert you have been to?
For the last week or so I have been reading peoples reviews of shows here. And its hard for me to believe why some people here even bother going. We wait a year or 2 for shows, we get all excited when we get our tickets, we wait patiently for the day to come.......Then after the show people come on here and bitch and whine about how other people were behaving? At a concert? Personally, I dont give a fuck how other people act at a concert....Its a concert!!!!
And this is nothing personal towards you...
There are 100 other reviews where people are just whining and complaining about other people at the shows....

Agreed, An EV solo show is exactly that, a SHOW. Pearl Jam plays a concert. You don't got a show on broadway and get all rowdy.
Act like you would act if Ed was playing only to you.

it's rock and roll
it aint the opera
A guy sitting on a stool playing the Ukelele is not rock and roll.
A guy playing the guitar while chellos and violins play is not rock and roll.

I've been to several "sit-down" type shows before and last night was my first Ed show of this nature. The crowd in all honesty was about the same as it is with anyone else. There is always the idiotic people who think because its quite they might get to "talk" to the artist. Happens at EVERY show of this nature. They don't have to be drunk for this to happen. It's their need/want to be recognized. "OMG eddie heard me when I shouted out (insert dumbass remark)".
I've seen Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds 5 times, and Phish played an accoustic set last year at Festival 8 and asked everyone to sit down and chill out. It happend all 6 times and last night was no different. In all honesty there were points where it was a little annoying, but thats what you get when you go to a show like this. Just try, and I'm emphasizing TRY to tune it out. It can be difficult to say the least, but eventually they will stop. I thought last night during the songs most people were extremely polite and listened. During the stories it would get old, but a lot of people don't realize its NOT a PJ show. I understand most peoples complaints. We go there not only for the music but for the stories. Other people see Ed is playing the Chicago Theater and don't really understand what they are getting themselves into.
To the person who complained that "people were sitting down the whole time". Man that is what this show is. That is what every show of this nature is. They are supposed to be intimate, not a rager. It's like going over to his house and sitting there with some friends listening to him play and tell stories. Not a 4 night stand in Philly.
Everyone has the right to complain, but from my perspective last night was normal, and in some cases pretty damn good from a crowd perspective. Enjoy the music and the fact your one of 3500 people getting to witness this and worry a little less about the idiot in the balc screaming out lukin. Unless your sitting right next to him, then politely punch him in the face.
I have always been a big fan of the WOOO HOOO girls!!!!!

He definitely wants you to sit and enjoy the show... from Chicago N2 in 2008, Ed says "There's beautiful velvet seats and I think we should all use them because I think we're gonna be here for a while"... Last nights show was much tamer/more respectful than in 2008. It was quite nice to not hear people yelling during songs or during the storytelling.
