Thank you everyone; the set list has now been updated. Without the mics, the idea was to present the song in the way it would have been done when the theatre was built. Ed and Glen are making use of the theatres' natural acoustics. How did that sound to everyone? :)

what's bp? did he shake hands or talk to any fans?

Just saw Ed and Cheli taking BP at Comerica Park along with others. Ed was in RF and gave us a wave. Too cool. Great show. Can't wait for Toronto in Sept.

    Ed,

Thanks so much for taking the time to read the letter I gave you before the show about my grandfather's passing and asking you to play MotH for him. It was incredible. I had family in attendance, making it all the more special.

    All the best,

    Tim

How did you see Ed before the show?

Ed put on a fantastic show. Drove 3 hours to see it...only bad part was too many people who felt the need to clap along with every song (off tempo mind you) and scream at all the wrong times. That "great crowd" that people are referring to often times was overwhelmed by LOTS of assholes who don't have a clue. There's a difference between and EV show and a PJ show. Quit screaming, clapping, talking, and updating your fucking Facebook page throughout the show.

Besides that, the Fox Theater was beautiful and the setlist was amazing.

I thought it was great and more of that fun should be done! One thing that I think could help is if Eddie engages the crowd before hand and participating in active listening. Maybe coming from him we'd all get it in our heads to think about what is about to happen.

I'd also like to have more back and forth sing alongs between the crowd and ed (like in arc?)...it would be a great follow-up to a song in which we had to shut up for two minutes for!!

A great concert, Ed sang beautifully, start makin' them bootlegs, and can't wait for San Diego!!

    Excellent show
First time I saw Ed Solo. Being from Pittsburgh I was very happy to see Ed play remotely close to the city of champions. So I guess I have to thank CC for bringing Ed to Detroit Rock City!
The venue was awesome and very big. Compared to the Benedum in Pittsburgh it was like a XL to M in size.
The merch thing always cracks me up. We went in a little late so hoodies were down to small, medium and we got a Large plate tee.
The poster was cool if you are a wings fan. Being a Penguins fan the poster was a no go for us. But if it were a Penguins poster I would have bought 10!!!
I gotta admit I was not feeling any pain and could really have cared less about the drunks at the show. So really no complaints from this guy.
10C tix were fine. We sat about 30 rows from the stage.
I really wanted to hear the Uke songs and it was nice he came out straight into the album. Can't Keep rocks!!!
Detroit is a great city if you know your way around. But its def. a city that shows its age and really is the poster child for the rust belt. (I should know I live in the buckle of belt!!)
My wife and I have been going to shows for decades now. I have told her about the changes of ten club fans and the growth of the membership. She def. noticed a difference and sometimes thats good and sometimes its bad!!
    Thanks 10C, Wishlist (Dirty Tom)

Great performance and setlist tonight. The crowd was great for the most part but there just so many drunk assholes there tonight that were extremely distracting. It seemed like every song there were 50-100 people staggering up the aisles on the floor and couldn't find their seats when they came back.

agreed! And the loudmouths totally ruined Sleepless Nights when Ed asked to turn the microphone's off....the entire place was silent at the start....then a drunken fool yells "EDDIE" followed by "YOU'RE SO SEXY" ....by the end of the song I could barely hear them.

the chick that yelled "you're so sexy" was 2 rows behind me and yelled "Black" 3 times during the show. She and her 4-some were wasted, they yapped through the whole beginning of the show when Ed play his Uke songs too, really annoying people, they were gone though when Hard Sun was played, whether they left to hit the bar or got kicked out I'm not sure, but there were a couple of times I thought of telling them to shut up

  • And my actual review:

The actual show was amazing. When my buddy and I walked into the venue we both just dropped our jaws when we seen the lobby. Absolutely amazing. We literately stood there for ten minutes gawking at the detail before we decided to step in the line for merchandise. Even then we were doing more pointing at the detail of the lobby then looking at what was our choices to purchase. Slightly dissapointed that the deck of cards were sold out. I was set on those from the previous show posts. And for the first time ever I did NOT buy a poster. Had nothing to do with how the poster looked. It was literally down to the fact that I have about a dozen that I have yet to frame. And I really need to focus the money on getting those framed.

Walking to our seats we were again blown away with the venue. I'd of loved to get a hour alone to just walk around and look at everything. This place blew the Civic Theatre in Akron out of the water for overall beauty. I was at the Ryman to see the two Ed shows a few years back and that place is special too (just something in the air when you walk in there), but The Fox was just a visual dream.

Glen Hansard was absolutely fabulous. his story about the phone calls from Ed after that misfortunate show of his was beautiful.

Ed's set really was great. I love the curtains closed as he starts playing Waving Palms and the curtain opens. That's such a great look. The Uke songs really were fantastic. He could of played them all and I'd of been content.

The super highlights were the Uke Songs for sure. Sleepless Nights just gave me chills for sure. Far Behind, Long Nights was fantastic. Actually all the Into the WIld songs are just great great pieces of music live. Hearing those reminded me of how great the Ryman shows were. And Let My Love Open The Door was just fantastic. And the pump organ piece was just fantastic as well.

Didn't really meet anyone new just a couple quick conversations, but that's my personality I tend to just keep to myself. Now the wait till PJ20....

Then they forgot how to speak English and shut the hell up. You guys are the two biggest wimps ever. Then another fight broke out behind us between guys that make The Hulk look small. Could not wait to get the hell out of Detroit. Show could not end soon enough.
Watched Hard Sun from the back before I ended up in jail. Friends in other sections said same things.

I think you're giving Detroit a bad rap due to YOUR bad experience at the show. The 2 have nothing in common. Everyone from outta town told me they loved our city...it's beautiful.

Please...it's getting harder and harder to find the Fanviews among the chatting. Please make a thread for some of these back and forth discussions. People click on these threads to read Fanviews...about the shows and about the music specifically, not about fans who may not be where you are musically when you see the shows. Thank you.

The show was awesome - and my buddy and I were glad we made it in to see some of Glen Handsard (sp?). Having never heard him before, we were impressed!

I saw Night 2 in Baltimore in '09 - about 3 songs in, Ed played a sing-a-long and, at the end of it, told the crowd to focus their energy on the great singing, not shouting out Pearl Jam songs he wasn't going to play if he heard it shouted - lol. He probably could have done something like that in Detroit, too. I didnt really mind, though - it's a concert with a rock legend, not the ballet!

Big Hard Sun was INCREDIBLE! The bouncing balcony was both terrifying and electrifying (we were on the main floor about 3 rows just in front of where the balcony hangs).

I love that he's playing Porch, Immortality and Man of the Hour on this tour.

My only disappointment was the merch counter - it was insanely crowded. I didn't even try, despite the fact that I really wanted a shirt. On the flip side, the bar set-up was the stellar!
  • Glen was insanely good. Ed played nearly a dream set list for me with songs like Off He Goes, Wishlist, You're True, Man of the Hour, Crazy Mary. Falling Slowly was so good. Loved Ed saying "A friend said you're playing the motor city, so you better give her some gas." This was the liveliest of the 5 solo shows I have seen. The crowd was worked into a frenzy going from Let My Love Open the Door to Elderly Woman into a rocking rendition of Immortality to Unthought Known so it didn't shock me he stopped Arc. He pulled the ear piece out after the first run and said "Fuck it." He stopped it the last time I saw him in Baltimore and the crowd was rowdier in Detroit. A few songs into it he seemed to notice the woman signing the songs and had funny interactions with her. Most gorgeous theatre I have ever been in. As always, he seems sincerely moved by the audiences reaction.

The untitled pump organ song bordered on a religious experience for me. Ed's vocal range and intensity is incredible, and paired with the pump organ, it was beautiful and moving. Sleepless Nights was a great moment without the mics, and I would say it was an experiment worth trying again. Bummer some fans would rather hear themselves yell instead of the rendition but I guess you have to expect some people to be "theives of silence?" Falling Slowly was a great example of the superb harmony between Ed and Glen. Just one of the many goose bump moments I had at the show. it was truly a dream come true to see EV in this gorgeous and classy venue. This was a show that touched my soul! Thanks for coming to Detroit!

Thank you everyone; the set list has now been updated. Without the mics, the idea was to present the song in the way it would have been done when the theatre was built. Ed and Glen are making use of the theatres' natural acoustics. How did that sound to everyone? :)

It was simply amazing! I would love to hear that again!!! He played a fantastic show!!
  • I love reading replies from Fox Theatre virgins, yep, scary as shit the first time you sit in the balcony, at least when the crowd is into it, the first time I went to the Fox, I was scraed for my life and it took me completely out of the music! Second time, it was cool.

Just finally able to sit down and write up my review of the show and what a great show it was!!! My first Eddie solo show and my first show like that in general. Also, an interesting night as since I decided to take my 6 year old daughter to the show. She is definitely a Pearl Jam fan and she loooves Eddie so I thought this would be a good introduction into concert-going since she is not quite ready for a full-on PJ show. It was our “girls’ weekend” and we were both giddy with excitement!!

The Fox Theatre is absolutely gorgeous! So ornate and I thought acoustically it sounded great. And so did Eddie! I mean he really sounded good, seemed to be in a really good mood, cracking jokes and stuff. I’ve already read the reviews regarding the ASL interpreter and the “mirrorball” girl.:lol: I just love the way he interacts with the audience. It shows his intelligence and regard for his fans for sure. Personal highlights of the uke songs were Can’t Keep and especially You’re True--was really hoping for that one-so freaking beautiful!!

Like someone else pointed out, from Let My Love on the energy just kept building. I feel like Eddie knew the crowd he was dealing with and he stirred us up. Small town was a definite crowd pleaser. Immortality was AMAZING and another song I was really hoping to hear, so I couldn’t have been happier with that…and then Unthought Known…WOW!! Great combination of “builder” songs. Not sure what happened with Arc. Hearing all the talk about how it is such a spiritual moment to share with Ed, I was looking forward to that experience, and I was a bit confused when he walked over to the organ. Oh well. I think that was mostly due to half the crowd were not aware of the significance of the song, hence the shouts, while just as many were like “SSSHHHHhh!”

The first encore was truly awesome!!

Loved Wishlist and Porch….maybe I’m a bit keen on the PJ covers.... ;) I just can’t help that, but no doubt the softer moments with Ed and Glen were special. They are quite a pair musically. I just appreciated both of their performances.

My little girl actually fell asleep during the show. I felt bad, I thought it would be a good time for her, but she said it was boring. :o:o She said she would have liked it better if he would’ve just played Sometimes and Just Breathe (her 2 favorite songs) over and over again. Oh well, at least she got Just Breathe. I asked her what her favorite part was and she liked Hard Sun the best.

I’m not really sure what time he stayed on until, but it seemed like every time I thought the first encore would be over, he sang another song. In fact, I was shocked to get Porch. I was really happy with the set list, the performances, and I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth.

I had never heard of Glen Hansard until this tour, so I was pleasantly surprised with his performance, and he just seemed like a really cool guy. Looking forward to hearing some more from him at PJ20.

Finally, a lot of the posts revolve around the people who were in attendance and not the show itself. I personally had zero problems with the crowd.

Thanks Eddie and company for a great show!!

After the Detroit show, which was amazing, my friend and I ended up randomly meeting Eddie outside of Comerica as he was leaving the park (he was playing on the field with Chelios and John Cusack after the show). There were maybe 5 or 6 of us there at the time he was leaving the stadium and we all begged him to get out of the van and meet us...and he did. He shook all of our hands and said hello. It was seriously the coolest thing ever.

I think that is worth your first post . congrats !!
  • Traveled up (and east :) ) from Chicago.

First impressions-cool venue, merch counter reee-diculous! Didn't even try.
Poster was freakin awesome, Blackhawks fan but will always love Cheli! Wish I would've toughed out the crowd.

    Amazing set list.

My highlights were Forever Young, DEFINITELY-the original uke song Soon Forget, Uncle Neil's Needle (though secretly when he mentioned Young I was fingers crossed that it'd be Harvest Moon), IMMORTALITY was absolutely incredible, all the PJ stuff was cool. Loved every minute of it.

The wife is preggers (our first-yay!) so we kept it pretty low key all weekend. Would've loved to have partied with the rest of the 10c'ers @ the Tigers game(s) and @ Cheli's. Next time, Gadget!

Second EV show and enjoyed this one much, much more than Chicago '08.

Second Detroit show (PJ @ Palace of Auburn Hills, May 2005). Frankly the crowds in Detroit have been fairly good. Had to obtain my tix on TM and was stuck on the left side, Balc. B. Nobody in my section was talking too much or had even left the seats during Ed's set. Very respectful throughout.
Hey, hey. My, my. Rock and roll can never die.

"Why go home? I am home! And I gotta tell you, it feels FUCKIN GREAT to be here. You may experience this yourself but, if you were born in Chicago, you're always from Chicago. And even if you don't live in Chicago, Chicago will always live in you."-Ed

Amazing show. truly amazing. and Ed was sick too, but as usual, he gave it his all and then some. Someone used the analogy of watching Picasso paint. Weird, I used the same analogy when I was talking about the show afterward.

Also, the person who mentioned the Sleepless Nights duet without the mics was right. That's missing from the setlist. It was one of the most tender moments ever. Too bad the chick to my left thought she was in on the gig too and was belting out the words. I had to shut her down. It's a small, intimate moment, people. Not a huge venue with the full band.

how did you know he was sick . ??

OMG thats so awesome, I really wanted to go to the preparty but got held up on the bridge and was too late, made it up for a drink but the raffle was being called when we got there, I heard he made it, stuff like this just makes me love Eddie that much more! i lost my grandma on June 24 2011, she would have been happy to have heard the show!

I agreee, I am from Ontario and every time i come to Detroit (huge Red Wings fan and Lions fan too) never had a problem with the people or crowds, its a great city! Also we had a very obnoxious drunk behind us, I got a beer spilled down my back, hit in the head and my legs mashed by the fold up seat but unfortunately people are idiots everywhere when alcohol is involved....the only reason I didn't punch her in the face was because I didn't want to get kicked out...lol
