really? would any other ship have to undergo such scrutiny and delay tactics? by the greek government not allowing them to sail, wouldn't that make them prisoners? actually no, because they have not been charged with anything. how can a government not allow people to leave it's shores???

Endless delays and fading hope while waiting to sail to Gaza
Activists scramble to meet Greek authorities' criteria to set sail toward Gaza despite meticulous planning.
Agios Nikolaos, Crete - Friday, 4:45 P.M.: J., a red-bearded Jewish-Canadian youth hears enviously from his friend J., a black-bearded Jewish-American youth, that the American ship to Gaza, the Audacity of Hope, sailed out of the Athens port at 4:30 P.M. without waiting for the permission of the Greek port authorities.
Two days earlier, it seemed certain the Canadian Tahrir would sail first, and it was the American J. who was envying his Crete comrades. Through the week, every new demand posed by the Greek port authority to the Canadian ship was meticulously followed. A signature, a document, another signature. An activist flew to Athens and back just to work out a single document. The Canadians turned out to be relentless virtuosi in dealing with the Greek bureaucracy. They didn't give up and they didn't betray a single sign of irritation, despite knowing that behind the exhausting and unusual pedantry of the authorities was a political decision to stop the ships.
On Thursday night it was understood that after the next meeting, scheduled for 10 A.M. Friday, at which point the steering committee will have submitted the final paper to the Greek authorities, the Tahrir will be free to sail. But on Friday morning, steering committee member and linguistics lecturer David Heap said he regrets to say there was nothing new. Go, swim and come back at 11:30, he suggested. Everyone came back at 11:30, only to hear there was nothing new, and to come back at 3:30. At 3:30 there was still nothing new, please return at 5. At ten minutes past five, at the fourth update meeting on the same day, Canadian J. burst into the meeting panting and announced that the American boat had sailed. The steering committee was not present.
At 5:35, Canadian J. - hooked to mobile phone and twitter with the American J. - announced the Greek coast guard is blocking the American ship and there are shouts being exchanged across the decks. At 5:40, an urgent call came in from the steering committee: Everyone get to the marina fast, journalists included. All rushed to the marina, by car or on foot, and there the picture finally became clear.
Since the morning, Heap told them, the authorities started making new demands. First, they were told to replace the boat's radio. One of the French Canadians rushed off and got one. Then it was: You don't have beds on the boats. "Yes we do," the Tahririan sailors said, pointing at some padded benches. The minimum demand is 10, they were told, and you've only got seven, and even these are too narrow. "We can find the legal minimum of bed width if we look." Then, another demand: a water heater on the boat.
The steering committee spent the day negotiating with the inspectors. Then, at 5 P.M., as they were holding a consultation on deck, a coast guard officer appeared in white uniform, accompanied by police, and asked to see their licenses. He then announced he was going back to the office with the documents - in other words, he's confiscating them.
The committee members, led by Sandra Ruch - the Jewish American registered owner of the boat, who has been in Crete organizing the flotilla since March - demanded to get the documents back, with Ruch offering to give the officer copies, rather than the originals. The handful of activists on the deck tried to prevent the officer from going back to shore.
Meanwhile the reinforcements from the hotel rolled in. While in Athens the coast guard was blocking the American ship, in Crete the activists were blocking the coast guard officer. But not for long. When the Citizen Protection Minister announced the government ban on all ships departing for Gaza, the transparent delay tactics became redundant. The officer left without the documents, while Heap told the journalists they could now state the boat is docked at the Crete port city of Agios Nikolaos, named after the sea-farers patron saint.

i agree D. and to echo what you said, if people want to do something they will find a way to do it. when people will give their lives for a cause that they believe in, it makes it very hard to discourage them from acting. what is the old saying? it is hard to work with someone who has nothing to lose or something along those lines..
i think the greek governent is not allowing them to sail because financial aid from israel will be cut off if they sail. israel and those that may bail out greece has the greek government by the balls...

i agree d. i know people with roots in israel and have met a few from palestine. it is not the people that is the problem. the people want peace. it is those governing the people that are the problem. i am sure that if you lock those in the region in a room they can come out with a deal. but when you get outside influences like the us government sticking their nose in there, that is where things break down. i am tired of my government fucking things up for people in the rest of the world.

you have no clue what you're talking about. the problem isn't just israeli government, it is israeli society, and the evidence is all the polls that are always conducted. when the majority of israelis vote in favor of discriminatory policies toward Palestinians, in favor of ethnic cleansing type policies such as population transfer, and are completely racist toward palestinians, this is not a coincidence. the problem in this conflict is not governments, it is the Zionist ideology. this is an ideological battle against a racist colonial ideology that needs to be completely rejected. unfortunately, the majority of israelis subscribe to this ideology, due to many reasons including an education system that brainwashes these kids.
a categorical rejection of the zionist ideology is what is needed to solve this conflict.

Gimme does know what he's talking about. Though it seems that the majority of Israeli's support the occupation, not every Israeli supports it, and/or the crimes of their government. I.e, who do you think B'Tselem are? Who is Jeff Halper? Who are Uri Avnery, Amos Oz, and Ilan Pappé?
The list goes on and on.

I never said that every Israeli supports it. What I said was that there is a problem with Israeli society in that the majority of it is racist toward Palestinians. You may bring up some Israelis who are uniquely past this idea of racism (though I would argue that Amos Oz is still a racist Zionist), but it doesn't change the fact that there is a problem with israeli society itself. a problem that runs as deep as the problem with the israeli government, and that's because it's not the core of the issue. the core of the issue, which causes these problems, is the zionist ideology that the jewish state runs on

i am going on the official policy that the government of israel has seemingly implemented. am i palestinian? no. am i israeli? no. have i been to gaza? no. i go by what i have read in the world media, not just the american media, because nothing is ever covered in the american media. i base my position on the positions of people that i have met who are close to the situation. some of those are directly affected by it. i also base my position on the materials provided to me from people who used to post here that know more about the situation on the ground than i do. i am not going to condemn all israelis because there are plenty who have stood up against the occupation and the blockade.
you seem to be posting an indictment of all jews, or all israeli citizens. sure, zionism is something that has seemed to be the offical policy in israel. just as imperialism seems to be the motivation of the united states. sure, leadership has chosen the policy that has been implemented, but that does not mean that all americans agree with or approve of our foreign policy, just as all israelis do not fail to see the insanity of the actions of the zionists.
i do not agree with zionist idealogy for several reasons, and i agree that that idealogy has created much more harm than good. you have been around long enough, through several screen name changes, to know that i am on your side in this conflict. but i am a realist in this situation. i do not forsee the complete rejection of zionist philosophy in israel, especially within one or two generations, just as i do not forsee the rejection of racist beliefs that seem to be indoctrinated in our southeastern states. that has been ingrained into society there for centuries. with the hardliners seemingly in control you can bet your life on the fact that the israeli government is looking out for one thing, the interests of israel. the land it has aquired is not going to be given back without a war. and how do you propose they go about rejecting the zionist idealogy? you and i know that it is fucked up, but it takes more than simply acknowledging that. it takes a concerted effort by those that do not hold the power to cause real change. unfortunately any sort of rebellion would result in the united states acting on behalf of israel. most people on either side do not want war. they want a peaceful resolution to this conflict. as long as those outside of the situation hold sway over those directly in that situation nothing is ever going to be resolved.

Greek coastguard forces Gaza 'freedom flotilla' vessel back to port
Canadian ship Tahrir part of international attempt to break Israeli blockade of Palestinian territory
Jack Shenker in Corfu
guardian.co.uk, Monday 4 July 2011
An attempt by one of the Gaza-bound "freedom flotilla" ships to defy the Greek government and escape from port was thwarted on Monday when armed coastguard officials caught up with the vessel and forced it back to shore.
On a day that activists had dubbed "make or break" for the international coalition of boats seeking to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, the Canadian ship Tahrir burst out of Agios Nikolaos port in Crete at 6pm local time after supporters blocked the coastguard with manned kayaks.
"We have left port [and] are full steam ahead – coastguard boat about 5-10 [minutes] behind us," announced passengers on the ship's official Twitter feed as they raced towards international waters. But the faster coastguard boat caught up with the Tahrir and prevented it from going any further.
"Our boat has just been illegally boarded by armed members of the Greek coastguard and commandeered against our will," Dylan Penner, a member of Tahrir steering committee, told the Guardian by phone from the ship's deck. "This is conclusive evidence that Israel's unlawful siege on Gaza has now been extended to Greece."
The captain of a US ship, The Audacity of Hope, was arrested after a similar failed attempt to flee the port in Athens last week.
The Greek government caused controversy on Friday when it banned all flotilla ships from leaving its ports, without explaining its reasons. Critics accused the beleaguered government of bowing to Israeli and US pressure and surrendering Greek sovereignty over its sea borders. The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, thanked his Greek counterpart for helping to stamp out "anti-Israeli provocation".
The flotilla's last hope now appears to lie with the Stefano Chiarini, a Dutch-Italian vessel currently docked on the island of Corfu. Campaigners on the boat say they are expecting to get legal clearance to sail on Tuesday and believe they have local political support for their mission, a claim seemingly confirmed on Monday by the local governor.
Spiros Spirou, the provincial official in charge of the Ionian islands, told the Guardian that he "admires and supports the activists' struggle" and said he would make no attempt to stop the ship if it left harbour. "Greece loves peace, but at this moment it can't confront more powerful economic forces," claimed Spirou, adding that official attempts to tie the flotilla up in bureaucracy and paperwork were merely a pretext to preventing it from sailing at all.
"The ban has come from the ministries in Athens and I have no responsibility for it at all – I've tried to get in contact with them and get an explanation but I have not been able to get through," he said. "Right now Greece is in crisis and decisions have been taken at an international level."
Elsewhere, flotilla activists vowed not abandon their mission, despite the growing number of seemingly irreversible setbacks. "Everyone involved with this flotilla came with the determined intention to break Israel's illegal siege on Gaza," said Penner. "This is not over yet."
The Greek police are holding a family friend of mine without charge for attempting to block the coast guard from stopping the Tahrir from leaving port .

Free Gaza is but one tactic of a larger strategy, to transform this conflict from one between Israel and the Palestinians, or Israel and the Arab world...to one between the rest of the world and Israel...
Adam Shapiro, quoted by Melanie Phillips, The Flotilla and The Third Intifada
The above quote, of Adam Shapiro--a co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement as well as a board member of the Free Gaza Movement which is behind the "freedom" flotilla, comes from a meeting last November at Rutgers university in New Jersey to raise money to fund an American flotilla boat. It is from a speech Shapiro gave, a video of which Melanie Phillips obtained.
I suppose we should thank Shapiro for his bluntness and honesty, seeing as other members of the flotilla continue to pretend to see themselves as a humanitarian group who want nothing more than to bring aid and relief to Gazan--who regularly receive literally tons of.aid from Israel on a regular basis that dwarfs what the flotilla claims to be doing. This is in addition to the fact that access to Gaza is readily available by land from Egypt.
Instead, Shapiro does not see the flotilla as a project to help Gazans. Instead its goal is to create a global conflict against Israel.
As if the conflict that Jews have faced around the world for centuries is not enough.
This is the context of the flotilla.
This is its agenda.
This is the point.
And this is what the supporters of the flotilla must be made to answer for
There can be no excuse for permitting Americans to involve the US flag in this. There is no “order” in the maritime environment without the exercise of authority by someone functioning, in essence, as a territorial sheriff. But the good news is that the enforcement of such order properly extends to preventing disorderly and escalatory acts by those operating under national flags. Individual governments are the highest authority, and in maritime terms, the US is chief among them. The Obama administration’s public passivity regarding the Americans in the flotilla and their US-flagged ship sends a significant and destructive signal about our posture on maritime order. It says we don’t care about it.
I figured in the spirit of the Moving Train, I would just cut and paste a long article that I found on google that defends my views.... :?
“The state of Israel is a friend and critical ally of the United States, and the only stable democracy in an increasingly unstable and hostile region,” wrote Perry, a vocal supporter of Israel who is considering a run for president in 2012. “These initiatives to breach Israel’s maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip is an unacceptable provocation.”
Under federal law, anyone who “prepares a means for, or furnishes the money for, or takes part in, any military or naval expedition” against a friendly country can be fined or jailed for three years. Perry also suggested that Holder prosecute the protesters for providing materials or assistance to a terrorist organization.
In his letter, Perry identified two of the ships as “The Audacity of Hope” and the “The Challenger II,” both of which he said were registered in Delaware. Perry also wrote that the ships will depend on U.S.-based Inmarsat for communications and navigation, suggesting that the organization could be held responsible for the protesters’ actions.
“I write to encourage you to aggressively pursue all available legal remedies to enjoin and prevent these illegal actions, and to prosecute any who may elect to engage in them in spite of your pre-emptive efforts,” Perry wrote.

a categorical rejection of the zionist ideology is what is needed to solve this conflict.
Do you support the occupation and continued Jewish-only settlement building?
I asked, do you support the occupation and continued Jewish-only settlement building?
you seem to be posting an indictment of all jews, or all israeli citizens. sure, zionism is something that has seemed to be the offical policy in israel. just as imperialism seems to be the motivation of the united states. sure, leadership has chosen the policy that has been implemented, but that does not mean that all americans agree with or approve of our foreign policy, just as all israelis do not fail to see the insanity of the actions of the zionists.
i do not agree with zionist idealogy for several reasons, and i agree that that idealogy has created much more harm than good. you have been around long enough, through several screen name changes, to know that i am on your side in this conflict. but i am a realist in this situation. i do not forsee the complete rejection of zionist philosophy in israel, especially within one or two generations, just as i do not forsee the rejection of racist beliefs that seem to be indoctrinated in our southeastern states. that has been ingrained into society there for centuries. with the hardliners seemingly in control you can bet your life on the fact that the israeli government is looking out for one thing, the interests of israel. the land it has aquired is not going to be given back without a war. and how do you propose they go about rejecting the zionist idealogy? you and i know that it is fucked up, but it takes more than simply acknowledging that. it takes a concerted effort by those that do not hold the power to cause real change. unfortunately any sort of rebellion would result in the united states acting on behalf of israel. most people on either side do not want war. they want a peaceful resolution to this conflict. as long as those outside of the situation hold sway over those directly in that situation nothing is ever going to be resolved.

The Perry
