I love Washington DC, but you'd be wasting so much time getting there. Ther are literally weeks worth of stuff to do in both places, so why take a day away from your limited time in either place? I would just do as much as you could in NYC and be happy with that.

If you do it, fly out of DC so you don't wast the 5 hours going back. But my guess is you already have plane tickets.

I get your point. 6 days in NY means there is no time for DC, that's my opinion, too. But, one of the three of us insists saying that "maybe we won't make such a trip to the US ever again, why not DC, too"?

We will fly back from Toronto. I thought about getting the plane to DC and come back again by plane, but what about the time getting to the airport? If I have to spend a total of 3 hours to go by plane, why not to spend 4-5 by car? What do you say?

I second the suggestion of not going to DC. I visited once, never had the desire to go back. I'd almost suggest going to Boston if you wanted to see more of the US but I really think you should spend all the time in NYC. NYC isn't a city that you can just pop in and out, you need to live it and let things marinade to truly appreciate it

That being said, if your friend really wants to go, I would recommend train. You don't need a car in DC and it will just be one more thing to worry about. Or if you want the cheap route, take one of those cheap buses. I don't like taking short flights in the US any more, they are more hassle than it's worth between getting to the airport, checking in, security check. You're much better off with train or bus because those normally leave smack in the middle of the city.

What I was trying to say was car or train to DC then fly. I agre I would not fly back and forth. If you do it, do it the way you're saying. Fly tor to DC, drive/train to NYC then fly home from there. That way you're only taking an extra half day going between.

Sorry to the person from Boston, but DC buries Boston. I love Boston, but just walk the National Mall and you could spend 2 weeks. Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam (most simple, but powerful place you will ever visit) and Korean war memorials, Smithsonian Museums, Washington Monument, US Capitol Building. And that's all on the Mall. Then there's the National Zoo, Arlington National Cemetary with the Iwo Jima Memorial and Tomb of Unknown Soldier.... I could go on (notice I haven't even gotten to the White House). Then for nightlife, off to Georgetown or any other number of locales. Boston has great history and is gorgeous, but it's not DC. For the couple days you might do, just stay at hotel on out skirts of DC near Metro Station, take Metro to the National Mall(it's not stores, it's a huge "park" like area) and roam that from end to end for 2 days).
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
