New York accomodation, PJ20

Hello to the Jamily!
We are coming from Europe (3 Greek guys, two from Athens and one from Aachen, Germany) to the US for the first time. We are going to stay 4 days in Chicago and drive back-and-fourth to Alpine Valley for PJ20.
After that, we fly to New York and stay there for 6 nights... waiting for the Toronto shows.
We are having trouble to find accomodation in New York. Any suggestions? We would like to visit all "tourist" attractions in Manhattan, but can't pay 150 $ per person, per night! Really, why is NY so expensive in September?

    Last few times we went to NYC, we stayed in Secaucus, NJ and took the bus to the city. Hotels there are a lot more reasonably priced. The bus takes you to the Port Authority from which I am sure you can connect to the airport.

    Stay in the area around where Rt 95 and Rt 3 come together. There's a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Courtyard, etc. and bus is easy to get. Do a search on "Plaza At The Meadows Shopping Center" on Google maps.

    DO NOt stay in the Tomelle Ave. area - Comfort Inn, Days Inn, etc. This area seems very bad.

    search a 35 mile radius
    preferably close to NJ transit or metro north train lines-you can get in and out of the city very easily
    Id skip long island and the LIRR, but thats just me

    DO NOT stay in New Jersey. Stay in the Belnord on the Upper West Side. I still don't get why people on this forum direct people to New Jersey when they are looking to visit/park/tour NYC. He said New York, not New Jersey.

    The hotel is called the Belnord and it is in the perfect location on the Upper West Side right near Central Park and the museums. Rates are around 130-160 a night.

    Either that or stay at one of the hostels on 103rd street--much cheaper. Stay in New York. Don't stay 35 miles away from New York. That would be a real trip buster. The last place I would want to stay if was staying in New York would be New Jersey. If you stay at the Belnord it would be about 50 bucks a night per person. Can you handle that?

    Search The Westin in Jersey city. Was less than 150 when I went and there was a train called "the pass" right next to it. The pass goes back and forth all night.

    You might want to check back at the bigapplehostel.com as the time approaches - I've stayed there twice and really enjoyed the stay. They're shut down right now (apparently NY is trying to shut down all hostels), but if they get back online, might be worth it.

    Otherwise, I found several hotels on hotels.com a little cheaper than $110 a night per person.. and if you search hotwire.com, then use betterbidding.com to figure out what hotel you're bidding on, you can usually get steals. Betterbidding matches up the number of stars, neighborhood, and amenities with the Hotwire mystery hotels.

    Good luck. NYC is awesome, don't stay far from Times Square or you'll miss out on half the fun.
    Is it too much to ask for a full-blown Temple of the Dog set? Probably.

    It's a funky hotel next to the Museum of Sex, and the cafe in the hotel (Birch) has fantastic coffee. They have dorm-style rooms with communal bathrooms as well as private rooms, but you are right, September is a popular time for visitors so they may not have availability. Labour Day weekend, US Open, colleges starting etc...

    You can also try your luck with sites like Priceline.com. Name your price and see what happens. Worse case you don't get a hotel, nothing lost, but maybe you might score a sweet deal!

    i just checked expedia, the belnord was $230/night for the september dates i checked. there was one in manhattan for $99...hotel carter, but the reviews were really bad, can't beat the location though.

    i'd check near JFK or elsewhere in queens, 3 greeks would feel right at home around Astoria i'm sure and there is plenty to choose from between $100-150.

    I have to agree with this. By the time you pay for the path, the subway, the cab and the wear and tear on you, you'll wonder why you ever came to NY (and wind up spending just as much).

    NY is expensive b/c there is a lot to do. Get a cheap Broadway ticket at the TICKETS booth, go to the top of the Empire State Building, go to the Museums on the Upper West Side, the Central Park Zoo (yes, there is a Zoo right in Central Park. It's not huge, but it's not expensive), stroll through Disney (I mean Times) Square, go to a restaraunt or bar that's not in your guide book, go to McSorely's down in the village, NY Public Library/Bryant Park to watch Chess at lunch time (it's amazingly interesting), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Museum of Natural History, Fireman's Museum. Just walk around town. That'll still be summer mode, and the "sights" will still be quite amazing. There's so much to do that costs $0 that the few extra bucks you spend on hotel will be worth it with the extra stuff you'll get to do being in the "middle of it all."

    I have stayed at the belnord, if you need a place to sleep for a night and are not claustrophobic, it is an ok place. The rooms are tiny, just enough room for a bed. The hallways are very small also. $230 a night for that place is ridiculously expensive. Plus you can really only fit one person in those rooms.

    try staten island, its just a boat ride away. for 150 a night you could split a room. odds are as tourist you'll end up on there anyway.

    Why are you guys trying to strand these poor Greek guys? Maybe if they had cars or were planning on calling it a night at 11 . . .

    Belnord is one of the best deals in Manhattan. Otherwise stay in the hostels. I don't know what kind of accommodations there are in nearby neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens but if they are significantly cheaper that would be worthwhile.

    Also try short term apartment rentals. I googled "New York short term rentals" and found this: http://www.directapartment.com/Rates/rates.html

    Can't vouch for the site, but agree with folks about not staying outside of Manhattan if you're here to visit Manhattan. Brooklyn might be okay but I really don't think it's that much cheaper in the BK.

    Belnord has not 3-person rooms... Seems an ok deal, though. Thanx

    I am thinking of Jersey City. Another Ten Cluber already suggested it to me... But, I am having seconds thoughts. There are others who insist on staying in Manhattan. Will do my best for Manhattan and if I don't make it, will go to Jersey, I suppose...
