We are coming from Europe (3 Greek guys, two from Athens and one from Aachen, Germany) to the US for the first time. We are going to stay 4 days in Chicago and drive back-and-fourth to Alpine Valley for PJ20.
After that, we fly to New York and stay there for 6 nights... waiting for the Toronto shows.
We are having trouble to find accomodation in New York. Any suggestions? We would like to visit all "tourist" attractions in Manhattan, but can't pay 150 $ per person, per night! Really, why is NY so expensive in September?
We appreciate any help. Thanx and see you in AV!
You HAVE to and I mean HAVE to got o Gallagher's steakhouse in NYC - it's on broadway...best food I have ever had in my life!!!0 -

Go to the top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building. From there you can get a better view of Times square and stuff, and you are also able to see Central Park, which you can't see from the ESB.2005:Calgary, Edmonton

I've had the best luck at the Chelsea Star Hotel...

It's in Manhattan, a block away from Madison Square Garden, walking distance to many attractions, including the Empire State Building and Times Square. Not the fanciest place, kinda hidden away, but clean, and has many options for room types (hostel/dormitory vs. private rooms vs. suites) at very decent prices. If you get there early you have a good chance at an upgrade... we had read about this ahead of time in a few reviews online. So when we stayed there, we had booked a private room (with one double bed) / shared bathroom for $99 per night, BUT we arrived early in the morning, and they upgraded us to a private room (also with one double bed) / *private* bathroom. It was a pretty freaking sweet deal for the location!0 -

+ 1,000000000!
We got routed there one time from a hotel that we'd booked at. Its revolting, and I'm not that picky. It has been classified as the worst hotel in the United States some years. We slept in our clothes and threw the bedspread on the floor. We skipped the shower. Do NOT Stay at Hotel Carter!!!! That's all I'll say but if you want to hear more, I'll expound.
I agree staying in NY is better than Jersey, but if you're going to stay in Jersey don't stay so far away. Stay in Jersey City near the Path train. The problem with staying in Jersey is once you're out of your room and in the city, its a hassle to go back to your room, if you need a little rest, or want to put shopping away in your room before going back out.R.i.p. We booked at Crowne Plaza Times Square, Manhattan. 300 $ per night (incl. tax.), accomodates 3. Seems a good deal to me. Still expensive, but September proved out to be the worst month to get a room!
Thank you all for your recommentations!
Now, it's time to make a 6-day schedule for New York!

Here's another suggestion but it sounds like you might be all set?
Hotel 17: http://www.hotel17ny.com/default.aspx?p ... 2cb3872656
They have a triple with shared bath for $170/night. This is in a nice neighbourhood; close to Union Square with many subways and great eating options within walking distance.
Check this website out also if you haven't already found it: http://www.eurocheapo.com/newyork/hotels/all.html
Happy to answer any questions about location/things to do, I just can't vouch for the hotels/hostels because I have not had a reason to get them. Hope you find something affordable! That's a great time to be in NYC!0 -
I love Washington DC, but you'd be wasting so much time getting there. Ther are literally weeks worth of stuff to do in both places, so why take a day away from your limited time in either place? I would just do as much as you could in NYC and be happy with that.
If you do it, fly out of DC so you don't wast the 5 hours going back. But my guess is you already have plane tickets.Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

No jersey for these guys...
Find the cheapest place in the city and stay there
You can get all over the city by subway for 2.25
You don't have to stay right next to times square..it takes 10min to get there from anywhere in NYC on the subway..which runs all night and is safei post on the board of a band that doesn't exsist anymore .......i need my head examined.......0 -

I get your point. 6 days in NY means there is no time for DC, that's my opinion, too. But, one of the three of us insists saying that "maybe we won't make such a trip to the US ever again, why not DC, too"?
We will fly back from Toronto. I thought about getting the plane to DC and come back again by plane, but what about the time getting to the airport? If I have to spend a total of 3 hours to go by plane, why not to spend 4-5 by car? What do you say?Athens,GR-30/9/06
