I heard the news 30 seconds before I started my acoustic set at a local bar. Opened the show with 'Born To Run' accordingly.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
Terrible news. I'm sad that I never got to see him play. R.I.P. Clarence!
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
Attended a Nils solo show last night in London and he played a song for the Big Man - not sure if he had passed away by then.
A very sad loss to all of us who loved him.
We we hoping to see CC one more time in NYC in early August.

what a bizaare series of events. clarence is featured on gaga's new album which will surely be the biggest selling album of 2011. and the song is by her statements the centerpiece of the album. just the other day, before he had the stroke, she unveiled the video for the song and the single, where clarence features prominently on it. A few days later, he had a stroke. she had her fans create youtube get well messages to send to clarence, which she edited into a 13 minute get well card.
So sad to hear the news that Clarence has died. My condolences to his family, friends and fans. May his wonderful music live on forever, and may he rest in peace.

I don't know what to say. This band has been a part of my life for so long. We listened to Springsteen music the whole way home from Connecticut today. I wish Clarence could have had a few more years.
I am brought back to the last WOAD show in Buffalo Dec. 2009, in which Clarence and Bruce struck up the Born to Run cover pose so subtly that you didn't realize they were doing it, and suddenly there they were standing like that. It was the most beautiful thing. I am so glad I was there for that show.

ASBURY PARK, N.J. – Nancey Ryder-Cunningham said it felt like the end of the soundtrack to her life.
Outside The Stone Pony, the Jersey Shore rock club that helped launch Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, she wept Sunday as she surveyed the flowers, candles and photos that had sprung up overnight in honor of saxophonist Clarence Clemons.
"It changed everything in my life," said Ryder-Cunningham, 59, recalling the first of about 100 Springsteen concerts she estimated she had attended. "I was just a disillusioned kid on the street, and I feel like they rescued me."
Hundreds of the band's fans, including some who drove from hours away, gathered at the club, where Springsteen and his bandmates got their start in the early 1970s. Clemons died Saturday at age 69 of complications from a stroke.
"R.I.P., Clarence — you filled my life with music," said the inscription on one bouquet left outside the club. Inside, framed photos of the band, arranged side by side, were left on the stage Clemons graced so many times.
Clemons was known as the Big Man — for both his 6-foot-5-inch, 270-pound frame and his imposing stage presence. His raucous sax solos helped define the Jersey Shore sound of the 1970s and '80s.
Clemons' last performance at Stone Pony was a solo show in the summer of 2006, house promoter Kyle Brendle said, but Springsteen and Clemons played routinely at the club in the 1970s, usually as unannounced acts.
The gathering Sunday afternoon juxtaposed bereavement and festivity. Fans milled around, drank beer and sang along to Springsteen tunes as they talked about what Clemons' music meant to them.
"One of our first dates was a Bruce concert," said Cyndi Matts of Little Silver, recalling the night more than a quarter-century ago when she and the man who later became her husband heard the band perform the song "Jungleland." "When he had that solo and everyone put their hands up — it still gives me chills."
Val Vancleef, a 27-year-old podiatrist from Ocean Grove, said her parents never tire of talking about the time they sat next to Clemons at a restaurant when she was a baby. Clemons overheard it was the child's birthday and performed "Happy Birthday," the family story goes.
Gary Mottola, who owns The Stone Pony, said the E Street Band was "the soul of Asbury Park" and Clemons the soul of the band. When the city fell on hard times, it was the band's energy that kept it alive, he said.
Expressions of adoration for Clemons came from across the country after he suffered a stroke last week at his home in Singer Island, Fla. Lady Gaga encouraged her fans to create video tributes and Springsteen called him a "beloved comrade."
On Sunday came one more — from Gov. Chris Christie, who said Clemons represented the soul and spirit of New Jersey.
"On a personal note, when I heard about the Big Man's passing on Saturday night, I was struck with an overwhelming feeling that the days of my youth were now finally over," he said.
Heartbreaking to see Eddie's reaction onstage last night in Hartford. He had just wished The Big Man well, as he did in the Providence and Boston shows, when the stagehand went up to him and whispered in his ear. I haven't seen that happen before. Ed stopped, put his hand on his face, and people just looked. You hoped that it wasn't what it turned out to be, but pretty soon the word spread.
So glad I got to see him at the Fenway shows some years back. Those were magical nights.
Ever since I heard Jungleland, the saxophone has never been the same for me. Thanks Clarence, RIP.

That solo makes me weep. RIP BIG MAN
It's funny...I had my parents over to eat for father's day and we had been listening to otis, me and the old man having a few beers and for some reason right around the 7 o'clock hour I put in the rock n roll HOF dvd with the E Street Band and played Jungleland for them for the sole reason of letting them hear clarence's solo. They left and I put in the Barcelona dvd and watched it....I didn't know until the next morning this had happened.
RIP Big Man

(CNN) -- Flags in New Jersey will be flown at half-staff Thursday in honor of E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who died of complications from a stroke.
"Clarence Clemons represented the soul and spirit of New Jersey," said Gov. Chris Christie. "His partnership with Bruce Springsteen and the rest of the E Street Band brought great pride to our state and joy to every fan of this music around the world."
Clemons, 69, died Saturday at a hospital in Palm Beach, Florida, where he was undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke.
Clemons was born in 1942 in Virginia and began playing the saxophone by age 9. He moved to New Jersey, where he worked as a youth counselor, before joining Springsteen's E Street Band.
Clemons, who was dubbed "Big Man" by friends because of his imposing stature, made his last musical appearance in May when he took the stage with Lady Gaga on Fox's "American Idol" to perform "The Edge of Glory."
"On a personal note, when I heard about the Big Man's passing on Saturday night, I was struck with an overwhelming feeling that the days of my youth were now finally over," Christie said in a statement. "My condolences to Clarence's family and all the members of the E Street Band."
Clemons, whose fusing of blues, jazz and funk with rock on the saxophone put him in demand, recorded with a number of artists over the years, including Aretha Franklin, Jackson Browne and the Grateful Dead.
Clarence Clemons, aka, The Master of the Universe, Future King of England, and last, but not least, The Big Man, passed away from complications from a stroke. It was a surreal moment in my life, and I”ll never forget where I was. I sound checking, starting my Carleton Tavern gig in about 30 seconds when Cathy whispered in my ear ‘Clarence Clemons died, you need to tell the audience’. I was super upset, as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band put up two of the best concerts I’ve ever seen… So I did all I knew how, told the crowd the terrible news, and launched into a solo acoustic version of ‘Born To Run’ dedicated to the man himself.
Why so upset? I don’t know, he was a sideman, didn’t write the songs, was an average rock sax player… However, he was the big man, larger than life onstage. When Clarence got up on the stage, and smiled his big grin or blew into his sax, it spread joy throughout the room. Even older, whenever he stood up, the crowd cheered, sometimes louder than they did for Bruce himself. And that’s why I’m sad. Clarence, through his music and onstage persona, brought joy to the world, and unfortunately, the world is a little bit less joyful with his passing.
Rest in Peace Clarence.
