I don't understand the whole flag thing. During a concert it just screams "Notice me, Ed! Notice me! Same with the "I've been to _______ shows" signs. I think you can be a huge PJ fan without needing the band to notice you.

THIS person seems to get why

There are certain factions within the European fanbase that hold theyre flags up blocking everyones view throughout the whoooooooole gig. Italians and Portugese are big culprits. Portugese moreso I think?
Might not sound like a big deal til it happens and you cant see the gig you've paid all that money and travelled all that way for.

    just sayin..
did u ever see my flag waving?and blocking the view?cos we was together in a lot of shows... :)

Geez. People are getting pretty upset over flags. Listen guys and gals, when it was suggested that you bring a flag it's for pictures. You know, when you are roaming around the festival and you want to meet up with your friends from all over this planet, you can possibly take a picture with your flag to indicate that you've traveled pretty damn far to show your love. If you hit the preparty or whatever, collecting photos showing the flags helps illustrate how international the fan base is...That is all. No one is suggesting that people wave their flags during the show. Chill.

Why does it matter where you are from or how international the fan base is? I am going to bring a flag that says "I like pizza" and meet up with all of the other fans who like pizza. Then we can say, Pearl Jam has a lot of fans that like pizza. Oh wait, there is a crowd of people that like pulled pork sandwiches! Now they are die hards.

No, seriously I really am excited about meeting people who like the same food I do and who might like other food. Sorry, I didn't make my point very well there.

There are a few exceptions who screw it up for everyone else. I love the fact that fans want to bond via flags, that's awesome. :D But there will inevitably be people who take the next step and hold the thing over their head, blocking the view of the folks behind them... probably not 10c people, mind you... but some will do it. It's like the people who throw beer/water bottles, making the rest of us drink from crappy cups now.

Maybe I'm just bitter over that douche bag at Lollapalooza who Billie Joe singled out and took on stage. He was singled out because of the flag and got to be on stage, stage dove into the photographers, and became THE image of Lollapalooza '10 in most magazines. He wasn't even a Green Day fan, he was just some wacky French dude who schmoozed his way to the front of the pit.

At least he had a great time, I spose.
Is it too much to ask for a full-blown Temple of the Dog set? Probably.

  • My fiance and I are thinking of taking our hybrid flag, but we don't want to block the view of our other fellow PJ fans. We remember at one of the SF shows there was this guy holding his poster and would be rocking to the songs with it, and he was blocking my view and that of my fiance who was trying to record Do The Evolution, so I know how frustrating it is to have your view blocked...especially by a flag. But I agree it would be awesome to have the flags to take pictures with others around or perhaps while there are breaks in sets??

I get your point too. I couldnt care less if a guy travelled from the end of his road at Alpine or tasmania to get the show.....they are there for the same reason. Perhaps people use flags as a talking point, god knows, but those knobs who wave them around for the entire show need positioning squarely on their flag pole.

maybe people could wear a previous tour shirt from their part of the world... oh wait.. not a pj shirt at a pj show... thats not cool at all, no one wants to be that guy.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.
