I guess my friend said it best (please, no offense intended):
"I had a choice to either grow up a wigger, or a guido. I chose the wigger route."
Awesome. In my high school (NY suburb class of '98) the choice was "freak" or "g", a g being a rap/hip-hop person and a freak being a grunge/alternative person. I chose freak. Freaks could dress like grunge bands or like hippies. Gs wore basketball jerseys and stuff...this was before there were a lot of urban fashion labels. One year for Halloween, two of my friends swapped styles and dressed like the other one. Amazing what a difference it made to their look.

Not really me. I never blast or try forcing my friends to like my music.
for me it was never about forcing anyone to like my music or anything like that, just the mere mention of pearl jam and i get all this crap. like, one time, i was listening to my cd player before class and my 11th grade history teacher came up to me, took my headphones (cuz he's nosy like that) and put them on to see what i was listening to, which happened to be VS. he then said "who is this? pearl jam? ughhh, they had one good album, that pink album. eddie vedder sounds like something dropped on his toe." ughhhh...

*raises hand* I get it from my sister, from my teachers, and my closest friends.
Dude you were born a year before they came out, they sound like shit, he mumbles. All of this shit.. I just wish that they can open their ears, and see what it's all about.
Did you ever wish that you can turn everyone into a fan? Because you enjoy it so much, that you cant understand why others dont?
yes. i get a lot of trash talk from my family. One of my brothers goes out of his way to say pearl jam is weak and yada yada. My frenz too. They say stoopid stuff like pearl jam are of the past and they are washed up and whatever else. Yet when they hear or see anything pearl jam, they call me all exxxcited

When I do mention it I rarely ever get shit. They just go "yea he loves pearl jam, i dont really care though". One of my friend respects it, and one of my friends older bro gives me shit actually but hes just kidding and I think he understands also.
I don't get shit so much-more i'm desensitised....
I have loved them for so long and have such a passion for the band, that I have no idea the extent to how well known they are/or arent.
I was talking to someone a few months ago about PJ, and they turn around and say, "Who's Pearl Jam?".
I have met quite a few people who don't know who they are, even though I just assume that everyone would know?
I remember being in Hawaii in Dec '06 and telling a friend's daughter, who was about 18 years old at the time, a whole story about how we had seen Eddie Vedder on Waikiki beach a few days before.... and we get to the end of the story and she says "Who is Eddie Vedder?" Our jaws dropped... and we felt *old*
i dont know about you guys, but more than getting shit for it i c the people who think they are so into pearl jam and they dont even know much about them at all. now that i have listen to most of there stuff and have a ton of it i no how in depth this band is. at school i have people blaring yellow ledbetter and alive and they think they are big pj fans. and when asked about other songs or anything about the band they dont know. they just looked the lyrics up online and think they know it all...just needed to see if anyone else is in this boat. i c a lot of it now that im back to school.

Oh yes, I know what you mean. But I'd still take someone who thinks they disappeared in 93 over someone saying how much they suck. Just a few months ago I was talking with this guy, and PJ came up in the conversation, so I asked him if he heard their latest album from 06... he was completely floored and asked- when the hell did they reunite??
But then again just the other day I was talking to one of my oldest friends (I know her since we were like, 3 years old) and she said Binaural was one of her favorite albums. I pretty much dropped dead, lol.

I gotta say that I don't get shit for digging this band, but that's probably because most people I hang with know that I was down with them when "Ten" came out in '91 and that I pretty much haven't missed a tour since seeing them for the first time in '92. My wife likes them, doesn't love them; and she doesn't understand why I'm on the Message Pit all the time. That's probably the only negativity I can think of. I am very impressed seeing some of the younger fans like yourself on here. If I were 18 like you, I don't think I'd be a Pearl Jam fan simply because I wouldn't be exposed to them. They're rarely on TV (only VH1 rings a bell) and my local radio stations here in the Bay Area rarely play them as well (if they do, it's always something from the early days). Heck, when I flew out to Philly for this past Summer's shows, all the rock stations there played a ton of PJ, but when they played a 3-night stint in San Francisco in '06, the radio stations hardly made an effort to promote them (for you Bay Area fans, I'm talking about our shitty rock stations: KFOG and Live105). So a big kudos for you!

i always get questioned for liking pearl jam haha. i always get the "thats weird, you were born the same year ten came out." also, my mom thinks im on drugs because i listen to them lol ,its actually funny though
I always do
I find myself defending them all the time
those who say "who are they" and and those who do know say "they suck"
"are they still around" crap like that....makes me so angry
most 16 year old girls love, say, fall out boy or hellogoodbye
i get that pj is 'way before my time'
well screw you!
you see, i'm way different than you....
i actually have good taste in music :]

it's so funny, i could tell you a lot about the music of the early/mid 90s like pj and grunge, and like live and collective soul and what not, but i dont know a thing about what the kids listen to nowadays i've never even heard of hellogoodbye are you sure thats a band?
Original guy - listen, don't go ON about them to the people around you if they're not into it. That's why you're getting trouble from them. Just enjoy the music yourself, chat with others who like it, and ignore the opinions of those who don't like it - it doesn't really matter if its a problem to them that you like Pearl Jam - its their problem; don't make it yours.

Well I mean where I live, Staten Island all the younger kids are into Rap Hip Hop, and pop rock. So no one truly appreciates REAL GOOD rock and roll anymore. I feel im doing a good deed in the PJ community keeping the spirit alive among the young masses lol.
good for you.i always think about the young bucks growing up today and how difficult it can be for them to find good music amongs the crap that fills the radio and tv these days. do you ever wish you grew up in the ninties during pj's hey day? my highschool year book (96) has PJ as the 2nd most popular band behind dave mathews. and i know people hate dmb, but that 1 and 2 combo has to be WAY better than what most 08 yearbooks have up there....
My friends joke that I am stuck in 1994 because Pearl Jam is still my favorite.
And then I get their Eddie Vedder impressions singing Animal or Jeremy.

most positive. a few of my friends love them. maybe one good song, but other than that, not my thing
i'd much rather kick back & listen to pj or classic rock.
but there are a select few decent bands/artists out today. like thao & the get down stay down, kings of leon, vampire weekend, MGMT,ra ra riot, conor oberst, & one day as a lion

there are plenty of good artists out today. Alter Bridge, My Morning Jacket, The Arcade Fire, Wolfmother (but they broke up :( ) The Raconteurs, Liam Finn, and many others- I listen to metal to so I wont get into all the good metal and progressive artists out there. They're just not as good as Pearl Jam
Not that they are any less talented, because most to all of Pearl Jam's songs are easy to play on guitar, and other bands are harder to play. Pearl Jam's songs are just unbeatable, there is no way to describe it. They have that extra something that is lacking in other music.
Maybe it's the chemistry that the band has. Or maybe it's their amazing songwriting skills. I'll never be sure, but whatever it is, it keeps me loving their music, and never ceasing to.
