I think it's awesome that this thread is almost 4 years old and 73 pages long and that you're still around, being the croc wearing elitist, expired yogurt eating, house cleaning, degenerate that you are. Save the Pooper indeed.
I will look for the Ken burns thing...you sure it wasn't a 2 hour show with 4 hours of 'pledging breaks'?
Very curious to know why some people can beat certain cancers, and others cannot beat it. Like every person that I know who was diagnosed with stomach cancer lost their battle. Some people like my aunt (who got breast cancer, beat it, was clear for 3 years, but then it came back), decided to stop fighting, and let it take over them.
Yeah by all rights and standards of Pancreatic Cancers.. My dad should be dead.. Six years ago.. But he and his one kidney, 1/3 of intestines, and half a liver, are just trucking along.. Wonder why that is??

the show delved into all of that. they also talked about the seemingly endless cycle of "promising" drugs that the Big C later builds a resistance to. but, damn, those people in the white lab coats are smart...and dedicated.
If I had known then what I know now...

wow! I just finished watching the 6 hour ken burns PBS thing on cancer....cancer: the emperor of all maladies....very emotional.
I never gave a whole lot of thought to cancer research...I always thought it was just a never ending cycle...it could well be...but this show made me think it's NOT never ending...I think they're getting somewhere!
THANK YOU to the scientists, doctors and nurses who are devoting their lives to understanding this awful disease...I'm still down on the money grubbing drug companies but, wow, these researchers are amazing....I gotta think 99.9% of them are in this for the right reasons (as opposed to say, breast augmenters and liposuckers). I feel like if any of your kids get cancer, things will be much better for them and it won't be the horrible diagnosis that it is now.
one more thing that struck me?...how do we live in a world of wonderful people in one extreme and fucking assholes like ISIS on the other?? may all those mother fuckers GET cancer and have not not a single member among them with the brains or compassion to do anything about it.
I hope some of you got a chance to see this show. if not, you can find it at http://www.pbs.org/
I got to watch parts of it, especially the first night. I've been teaching a class on Wednesday nights so I didn't see any of part 3.
I was very struck by the progress that's been made in the last hundred years or so. How leukemia used to be considered an automatic death sentence and now most forms of it are survivable. The changes in treating breast cancer--wow! I can remember when women had radical mastectomies. I never realized how disfiguring that was until seeing this program. Also, the stigma that used to be associated with cancer. People hid the fact that they had it and many people kept their children away from someone with cancer. It gives me hope that we'll keep getting past the stigma of HIV and other diseases.
I agree, the researchers are genuine Good Guys. I think of how I used to hear cynical people say that it was all a racket and doctors wouldn't find a cure for cancer because it would put them out of business. Seriously? As if doctors don't get cancer or lose loved ones to it? The gynecologist that I saw for more than 20 years, a wonderful caring man with a great sense of humor, had to retire in his 50s because of cancer and died less than a year later.
I think there's a lot of things to be hopeful about and we'll keep seeing improvements in treatments. People who do research don't get big promotions or CEO salaries but the work they do deserves it.

After what we thought was a successful surgery (i.e., nothing detected in lymph nodes pre-op), my father-in-law had his post-op follow-up appointment today. Stage III, it's in his lymph nodes.

Thanks a bunch. I'm gobsmacked. We were just all prepared to hear better news.
Truth be told, I'm sure I'm probably taking it harder than he is. He is an unbelievably tough and constantly cheerful old man.
